TRANSCRIPT

On this day when the nation remembers all those who have served and are serving in our military forces, we hear of a force of different character and inclusive of everyone. Welcome to this Easter resurrection community. We hope you experience the wide, long, deep and unstoppable ‘force’ of Jesus’ forgiveness and love in worship this morning.

The resurrection community of new life by faith in God’s grace in the risen Jesus expands. It began as a Jewish movement in one city. The

Book of Acts shows us how it became a global multi-racial community inclusive of all walks of life.

Today we hear that well known account of Philip and the man from Africa – the Ethiopian Eunuch. He is a mystery of man!

He is weak and strong, viewed as only ‘half a man’ and yet the Treasurer of a nation who sits just under the Queen of that nation. He may be Jewish or not. He knows the Temple, the Worship, the Scriptures and yet he by law is forbidden to enter the city temple.

We are going to hear just how inclusive, wide and unstoppable Jesus’ new creation of all kinds of people really is. We are going to also hear how this new creation comes to people. It comes to people via people! May the Spirit give you joy and new inspiration for your own life as you receive his new life and calling for your life today. Pastor Adrian

All these pieces

Broken and scattered

In mercy gathered

Mended and whole

Empty handed

But not forsaken

I've been set free

I've been set free

Amazing grace

How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

Oh I once was lost

But now I am found

Was blind but now I see

Oh I can see You now

Oh I can see the love in Your eyes

Laying Yourself down

Raising up the broken to life

You take our failure

You take our weakness

You set Your treasure

In jars of clay

So take this heart Lord

I'll be Your vessel

The world to see Your life in me

Amazing grace How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me Oh I once was lost But now I am found Was blind but now I see

Oh I can see You now Oh I can see the love in Your eyes Laying Yourself down Raising up the broken to life

Rev Dr Michael Lockwood has answered the call to serve as a missionary with the Lutheran Church in the Philippines (LCP), a partner church of the LCANZ through LCA International Mission.

Dr Lockwood will take up teaching duties at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Baguio in July. His move is in response to a request last year from LCP President Rev Antonio Reyes to LCA International Mission for assistance with the training of pastors and deaconesses for his church.

The LCP seminary had been in desperate need of additional support, said the LCANZ’s Assistant to the Bishop – International Mission, Pastor Matt Anker. However, LCA International Mission was not in a position to respond to this request alone. ‘With few options locally, God provided the way’, Pastor Matt said of a funding partnership with the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.

The LCANZ’s General Church Board called Dr Lockwood to the role, which he accepted and, together with his wife, Naomi, and children, Asher and Jadon, is preparing for the move. ‘I am very excited about this opportunity to be part of what God is doing in the Philippines … and to be able to play a part in equipping pastors and church workers with a deep understanding of God’s word and the good news of Jesus Christ’, Dr Lockwood, pictured, said.

LCANZ Bishop John Henderson wholeheartedly endorsed the new partnership. ‘I see the call to Dr Lockwood to serve among our fellow Lutherans in the LCP and our region as a significant moment for the LCANZ’s participation in the mission of God’, he said.

Read more in LCA International Mission’s Border Crossings magazine, which you can access online at https://lcamission.org.au/category/resources/border-crossing-magazine/, or request a printed copy by emailing LCA International Mission at [email protected] or phoning 08 8267 7300. A first connection for LDS family

(Lutheran Disability Services) By Jessica Smith

“Yes.” It was a simple word, spoken by a daughter to her father, which was full of huge significance and emotion for the Obst family. For the first time in her 23-year life, daughter Chelsea was able to directly answer a question that her father, Mark Obst asked her – thanks to the assistive technology of an eye-gaze device.

Chelsea, a resident of Lutheran Disability Services (LDS) accommodation in the Barossa, has Rett Syndrome and is non-verbal. Until now she has been unable to communicate through anything but basic actions.

“Chelsea will let me know if she doesn’t want to do something or doesn’t want to eat a certain food through her actions, but the eye-gaze device allowed her to communicate in a real way for the first time,” says Mark.

Mark was visiting Chelsea when the LDS team and a speech therapist were testing the eye-gaze device with her. Eye-gaze technology helps people with significant physical disabilities to operate a computer using just their eyes. A special camera tracks eye movements, in turn moving a mouse on the computer screen, enabling the user to communicate, play games, undertake learning or operate other devices connected to the computer.

At first it seemed Chelsea wasn’t particularly interested – “she wasn’t focussing and the team thought that maybe the device wasn’t right for her,” Mark recalls. But when Mark began asking her questions something clicked, and Chelsea started to use the gaze device to talk to him.

“I asked Chelsea if she’d like to come home with me for the weekend and suddenly she moved her eyes and the machine responded with a ‘yes’,” says Mark. “You can’t imagine how I felt, to have my adult daughter respond to me for the very first time.”

The LDS team and speech therapist watched amazed as Chelsea was able to maintain her first ever conversation with her dad, who was understandably ‘blown away’ by the experience.

To conclude the session the team went through some eye-gaze trial questions, with Chelsea easily able to point out her favourite foods (Cheezels and chocolate) and answer a range of other questions using the device.

Chelsea’s success with the device prompted the LDS team to secure a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan review for her, allowing Chelsea to rent her own eye-gaze unit.

The device will give Chelsea, who found her happy home at LDS in January 2019, even more opportunities to connect with her family, friends, housemates and support workers in the future.

Men’s night out

Barossa Valley Christian Life Week This is a five-day camp for high school aged students centred around an unforgettable experience of faith, friendship and fun! Camp for 2021 will be held from the 5th-9th of July at Cornerstone College in Mount Barker. Christian Life Week is a camp run by Blueprint Ministries and organised by young adults who volunteer within the Barossa Valley.

There are many ways you can get involved in supporting our ministry. Firstly, support from our local congregations and churches is essential to being able to run camp. Your congregations are home for our campers all throughout the year, and we hope that all campers can find a welcoming church-community year-round. We would love to encourage you to take time prior to camp to support and encourage our young people to attend Christian Life Week, and follow up after camp and engage our young people in discussions about the experience. One conversation can go a long way!

Secondly, fundraising enables us to lower the cost of camp for young people who come along and this is something we are putting extra time and focus into this year. We would greatly appreciate receiving financial support for Christian Life Week this year. We can take donations for specific areas of camp where you can specify what area of camp you want your money going towards. This could involve sponsoring a camper, food, activities, venue hire or general camp costs. Donations can be made with cash when we visit churches and are in the community or feel free to contact us for details to electronically transfer or other payment options.

Also, we have a Bake Sale and Sausage Sizzle coming up on the 2nd of May at St Petri Lutheran Church. After the first service we will have a few sweet treats for sale out the front of the church, and after the second service we will have a sausage sizzle happening behind the Hand in Hand Centre by the carpark. We would absolutely love to share some fellowship with you and get the conversations about camp started. So make sure you put the date in your calendars and bring a few dollars to grab some food.

Finally, this year on camp we are aiming to strengthen the relationship between campers and our local church communities. We will be holding an activity for campers to receive and write letters to people from the Barossa community. If you are interested in this initiative, or want to find out more, please contact Rachael and Eliza at [email protected] or via phone at 0499 710 908.

Most importantly, prayer is the biggest thing we could ask for from our local community. We just invite you to take some time over the coming months to pray over this ministry, the leaders and people involved in the running but also the young people; that our hearts can be prepared and that the space is able to be utilised for the glory of God. We thank you in advance for your time and energy in this mission.

Safe Church Training level 1 (Full) If you are involved in Children’s Ministry or would like to be … this includes Messy Church, Family Centre groups or creche or any ministry involving children then this course is for you. It also is for you if you visit elderly people or people who are considered more vulnerable. Our Church leaders also need to complete this training as they make decisions which affect our children. It covers

• Standards of Ethical Behaviour

• Working with Children and Youth

• Keeping People Safe (M1)

• Safeguarding Children,

• Child Protection (SCCP)

We have 2 options for this training. 1) Face to Face training 24th May,

31st May and 7th June (need to do all three)

St Petri Hall 5.45 pm — 8.45 pm (Cup of soup available 5.45 pm) 2) Online Training — go to the LCA

website Professional Standards dept training page and click on the link to register. You need to have good internet access.

It is recommended that if you have not completed this training before that you do the face to face training as it is an advantage to work with a group and think of how we do things for our particular local ministry.

Cost for online or face to face level 1 training is $21 and will be paid for by St Petri Church if you are involved in any St Petri ministry or leadership.

Please keep these dates free and contact Rosie or Tania if you have any questions or would like to book in.

Tuning Into Kids

Our 4 week course helps parents to teach their children how to understand and regulate their emotions. This course is suitable for preschool children but also very useful for children up to 10 years. As children develop awareness and knowledge about emotions they become better at expressing them in appropriate ways, improving their communication and helping them to be resilient and helping them to problem solve tricky situations.

In Touch ‘Don’t worry, you’ll be right!’ How often do we hear this phrase. It could be the

reply from a well meaning friend or a parent in response to an upset child. While the intent is well meaning and often from a place of caring, this almost automatic response highlights how uncomfortable many of us can be in the presence of big emotions, especially ones like anger, sadness and hurt. It can take practice to be able to ‘sit’ with someone when they are experiencing emotions, to listen with empathy, validate and not dismiss or minimise feelings. As a society many aspects of our culture are dismissive of our emotions. The message is often sadness is okay as long as it’s over quickly, crying or fear are displays of weakness or you should never be angry or show anger. As a parent we often desire to fix our child’s emotional experiences or try to take the emotional pain away however there is now research indicating that when emotions are ignored and pushed aside, they tend to last longer and leave the child with no ideas about how to resolve either the feeling or the situation they arise from. Emotion coaching is helping our children to understand and regulate their emotions and express emotion in appropriate ways. This helps to develop their emotional intelligence - improving their communication and relationships with others and increasing confidence and resilience to problem solve tricky situations. If you are a parent or carer and wish to learn more about emotion coaching we will be running an emotion coaching course ‘Tuning into Kids’ over 4 weeks and starting on the 20th May. Please see Rannane for more info and to book your place in the course

I hope all our volunteers and families enjoyed their school holiday break, Connect and Play will resume on Thursday 29th April. For now Connect and play will continue in the hall to ensure we have plenty of space for social distancing. It has been lovely to have our fortnightly Coffee Talk group continue over this period. Our Coffee Talk Group is running in the hall every fortnight on a Tuesday from 10-12. It’s a great place to get to know others and we have enjoyed welcoming new faces to this group recently. We would really love to have a diverse group of people attend this group, all ages and people from all walks of life are so welcome to join us.
