Pentecost Sunday
On the 50th day after Easter, the Church
celebrates the Feast of the Descent of the
Holy Spirit (Pentecost). "When the day of
Pentecost had come, they were all together
in one place. And suddenly a sound came
from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind,
and filled all the house where they were
sitting. And there appeared to them as
tongues of fire, distributed and resting on
each one of them. And they were filled
with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as
the Spirit gave them utterance." (Acts 2; 1-4)
At His farewell discourse to his disciples, Jesus told
them: "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another
Comforter, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of Truth,
Whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him
or knows Him; you know Him, for He dwells with you, and
will be in you…The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my Name, He will teach you all
things…" (John 14; 16-17, 26) The words of the Lord were
accomplished on the 50th day after Pascha/Easter, for the
seal of the Spirit was seen upon the Apostles in the form of
fiery tongues, just as we receive the seal of Holy Spirit in
the form of Holy Chrism through the sacramental mystery
of Chrismation/Confirmation, which is our own personal
Pentecost. Many devout Jews came from different nations to celebrate Pentecost, heard the Apostles speaking in their languages were amazed, while others said

they were drunk. Then Peter got up and spoke to them; "Men of Judea. Indeed all of you who are staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you and listen to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only 9 o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: It will come to pass in the last days, God says, that I will pour a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, young men shall see visions, you old men shall dream dreams. Indeed, upon my servants and my handmaids I will pour out a portion of my spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy. And I will work wonders in the heavens above and the signs on the earth below: blood, fore, and a cloud of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and splendid day of the Lord, and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord." (Acts 2; 14-21) Peter went on to speak of the risen Christ and His redemptive acts, reminding them that God raised Jesus, and that they were witnesses.(Acts 2; 32) Many of the people were affected by Peter's discourse, and asked what they should do. And Peter said to them; "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit…."So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about 3,000 souls. (Acts 2; 37-38) Our liturgical services refer to the Holy Spirit as 'the giver of life'. That's why we decorate our churches with green branches and wear green liturgical vestments to symbolize the role of the Spirit in creation, and the life of the Church. Green symbolizes new life and renewal which is through the Holy Spirit.
