DIRECTOR'S MESSAGEWelcome to West Valley Light Opera Association's 21st year! It is fitting

that the Association's landmark season should begin with "My FairLady", the Lerner and Loewe classic universally acclaimed as perhapsthe "Greatest Musical Ever Written". First on Broadway, and later, as anaward-winning film, "Fair Lady" has enjoyed phenomenal successbecause of its delightful story line and marvelous score. The challenge ofthe community theatre production is to do justice to this masterful, musical transformation of Shaw's "Pygmalion", while avoiding the all-too-alluring temptation to mimic the legendary performances of JulieAndrews, Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway. Or,equally disastrous, to attempt to duplicate the impeccable scenic andcostume design work of Cecil Beaton that has become a pictorialhallmark. Instead, we must strive to create our own "legends", our own"hallmarks", our own "magic", specifically, for you.

Likewise, Shaw scholars love to argue whether Eliza chooses to leaveHiggins and marry Freddy or not. I leave this decision up to you. For me,it is of much more importance that we laugh, cry, struggle with and cheerEliza on in her transformation from "draggle-tailed guttersnipe" to lovely"Fair Lady". I was six years old in 1956 when "My Fair Lady" opened inNew York. I was humming the tunes then and I'm still humming themnow. As you leave the theatre tonight, I would be most pleased if you feltlike joining me in a chorus or two! Bravo, Eliza!

SARAH TAYLOR (Eliza Doolittle) Sarah makes her debut on ourstage, but as a full-time student and actress at Gavilan College inGilroy, she is certainly no stranger to the theater. She lists manyperformances in the Gilroy area among her credits, but says thatthe role of Evie in "Stop The World, I Want To Get Off" is herfavorite. Sarah is majoring in Theatre Arts and plans to pursue atheatrical career. When anyone inquires why she commutesfrom Gilroy to rehearse and perform, Sarah says that eventhough the drive from Gilroy may cost her a mint, "playing Eliza isdefinitely worth it!" "Just You Wait" 'til you see her!

DOUGLAS HAGDOHL, II (Professor Higgins) This is a repeatperformance for Doug in the role of Professor Higgins. (He did itin 1978,too) He studied voice for two years and Theatre Arts forone year at SJSUand is the recipientof a Ginny Award for his roleof Patrick in CLO's "Mame" .. In 1975, he won the championship ofthe California State Talent Competition. Doug is currentlyappearing with "Dickens Unlimited", singing for private partiesand functions. We are delighted to welcome Doug back; "We'veGrown Accustomed To His Face"!

RICK FRANK (Alfred P. Doolittle) Rick is also a repeatperformer in this role, but this is his 10th production for WVLO,two of which he was the Play Director--"Brigadoon" and"Wonderful Town". His acting and directorial credits includedramatic and musical productions for Montalvo, Gaslighter,TheaterWest, Community Players, Saratoga Chamber Theaterand most recently Sunnyvale Community Players. (He wasEarthquake McGoon in "Lil' Abner") Rick has his own VideoProduction Co. called Video Memories which produceseducational films and commercials. "With A Little Bit Of Luck",we'll see lots more of Rick!

DOUG BAIRD (Colonel Pickering) Doug returns to WVLO afteran eight-year absence; his last performances were in "Pal Joey"and "Very Good Eddie"in 1976and 1977. This production will bethe 29th of his career and he has worked with several starsincluding JoAnne Worley, Nehemiah Persoff, Tyne Daly,Michelle Lee and Lainie Kazan. His wonderful talent, versatilityand affability were responsible for his winning two CLO GinnyAwards as well as the Gypsy Robe, which he was awarded twice.Doug is a kindergarten teacher in the S.J. School District and weare proud to have him back on our stage for he is not "AnOrdinary. Man"!

MARGE HAND (Mrs. Pearc;e)This production is a milestone forMarge for not only does it mark her twentieth appearance withWVLO, it was as Mrs. Eynsford-Hill in 1961for CLOthat she madeher acting debut in this area. A veteran performer, she mostrecently appeared as Parthy Ann Hawkes in last season'sproduction of "Show Boat" for which she won an ERMAaward. As Charter President of the local Quota Club, Marge is very activeworking for the speech impaired in the community. Her Club istrying to raise funds to install an infrared sound system in thistheater so that the hearing impaired may enjoy our beautifulmusic. "Without You", their supporters, it cannot bedone, so shehopes you will support them with letters to the City requestingsuch a system for the hearing impaired.

WILLIAM S. WILSON (Freddy) "Scott" returns after hisdelightful portrayal of Joe/Josephine in our last production of"Sugar". His very first role with WVLOwasin 1971asa young boyin "Fiddler On The Roof" and returned in 1980to play Will Parkerin "Oklahoma" and was cast as a featured performer rn theRodgers & Hart Musical Revue two seasons ago. Scott was oneof the original performers in the Music Hall at Marriot's GreatAmerical and we are convinced he has a promising future aheadof him. After he's reached the top, we can all say, "You Did It!"

KEVIN KELLYas

Harry

PAMELA REEDER (Mrs. Higgins) You'd never guess that this isPamela's favorite role. She just recently returned from a 3-weektrip to England (she was brushing up on her English accent inpreparation for this part.) She was educated in England, studiedwith the Freeman School of Dance & Drama in Manchester,England, so it seems quite natural in her English role. Pamelaalso repeats her performance, but she has also appeared in"Good News" and was Mrs. Burnside in "Mame". Other creditsinclude SDG's "Anything Goes", "Music Man" and "Little NightMusic" as well as CLO's "Oliver". She directs and performs invariety shows for local service clubs for charity events. "Wouldn'tIt Be Loverly" to have such a creative and dedicated performerarranging such functions. We're grateful to Pamela for the timeand effort she has given our production.

WEST VALLEY LIGHT OPERA ASSOCIATIONANNOUNCES ITS 21st SEASON - 1985-1986

Second Show"DAMES AT SEA" - This 1930's musical opened on Broadway Dec. 20, 1968, to ravereviews. It has won the praise of critics and the hearts of audiences to make it one of thebiggest hits of many a season. For "Dames At Sea" is really not about the 1930's, but aboutthe campy nostalgia of the Hollywood musical extravaganzas of the 30's. It won the NewYork Times Outer Circle Critics Award as best musical of the year. PerformancesMarch/April 1986

third Show"IRENE" - This revival of the 1919hit, which opened on Broadway in 1973,marked anotherfull-fledged love affair with the real musical theatre - a theatre which genuinely entertainssimply because it offers a basic blockbuster melange of great songs, an uncomplicatedbook and a wonderfully optimistic outlook - who could ask for more! The major part of thescore was written by Harry Tierney with lyrics by Joseph McCarthy. Others contributed tosuch songs as "Alice Blue Gown", "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows", "Irene", and "You MadeMe Love You". Performances June/July/August 1986
