Heslops, Kegan says the volun-teers’ employers are also very understanding.Tim Westenra, who has attend-ed 11 of the 23 call outs, and has a busy job as operations manager at Brenics, says the brigade has had a frenetic start to the year, making his long days at the office even longer. “I’ll be late for work again,” he told the Waimea Weekly after attending call out number 11 at Waimea Intermediate on Tues-day. Nathan Freeman (11 calls), Craig Clayworth (10) and Al Ferguson (nine) have also been busy. The Richmond Bri-gade has attended seven false

alarms, six property fires, four special service calls including three ambulance assists, three fire alarm activations, two motor vehicle accidents and one vegetation fire so far this month. And the bad news for the bri-gade is that their workload is likely to increase if the hot, dry weather continues. The Waimea Rural Fire Net-work has already stopped is-suing permits for open fires and operations manager Doug Ashford says further restric-tions will be implemented un-less there is significant rain. Doug says that roadside mow-ing will be banned from next week while a restriction is likely be placed on the hours of

forestry operations. “The fire danger is moderate to high and we are managing but if the wind gets up it would go to high or extreme very quickly. We have been lucky so far because people in Nelson are very conscious of the fire danger and take extra steps to make sure they don’t take any risks.”Doug says they are advising everyone to be cautious when working outdoors, particularly when grinding, welding, mow-ing lawns or working with any-thing that may create a spark. People should dampen down the area surrounding their work site and only mow your lawns in the morning or even-ing to minimise the risk.

Waimea Intermediate’s roll will hit a new record high of 670 when school starts next month and it could have been even bigger with about 30 out-of-zone students being turned away because of a lack of class-rooms. Principal Cleve Shearer says the school “knew the increase was coming” with demograph-ic data forecasting a peak in intermediate-aged children in the Tasman district in 2015. The school had a roll of 630 last year and, on the basis of that data, was planning for an increase of around 20 students. However, Cleve says the roll will be even bigger than ex-pected because of enrolments from families moving into the district. The school has ac-cepted 19 out-of-zone students this year but has been forced to turn down “over 30” appli-cations because of a lack of re-sources.“We got so many out-of-zone applications we stopped count-ing. We haven’t taken any year eight out-of-zone students - we just have too many kids.”Cleve says the number of en-rolments from families moving into the district caught them by surprise and they haven’t had

time to get a new classroom. The school has appointed one new teacher and will convert its science room into a class-room this year to accommo-date the extra students. “We aren’t that happy about losing our science room that but we don’t have a choice,” he says.Cleve says the selection process for out-of-zone applications has been difficult for both the school and parents. He says the school has worked “really hard” to ensure that it has been fair but has still faced some challenges from parents.

“It’s been uncomfortable but we have followed a standard process that is used by other schools and have been very fair.”Waimea Intermediate will have 23 classes this year.Nelson College is also running out of room and will be taking classes in the school’s boarding houses this year as the student population outgrows the num-ber of desks and chairs avail-able.The region’s oldest college will welcome 1210 students when it re-opens next week, up on 1080 at the same time last year and head master Gary O’Shea says that’s putting pressure on the school’s resources.Gary says the growth has come from the Tasman district and Stoke with many families opt-ing to send their boy to a sin-gle-sex school. He says 40 boys have been en-rolled from Broadgreen Inter-mediate alone. At Waimea College, the roll has remained steady with almost the same number of students enrolling this year as last, 1541, compared to 1535 at the start of 2014. Garin College has recorded an increase with 510 students en-rolling this year, up from 488 last year.

Organisers of the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival being held at Middle Earth Vineyard on Sunday, February 15 are in-troducing one or two new innovations for the 11th edition of the popular event.Enjoying great wine, beer, food and live entertainment in Middle-Earth’s pictur-esque vineyard has always been the big attraction of the festival which is run by Richmond Rotary as a fundraiser for the community. But this year Richmond Ro-tary have tweaked the festival to make it more family-orientated with parents being encouraged to bring their children. “We used to try and pretend that kids didn’t exist which hasn’t worked so we are

changing things around this year,” Rotary’s Pete Glue says. “Children under-12 will still be free but we are catering for them this year with a children’s area. “Brightwater School is organising that and they know exactly how to entertain kids. It will make the whole event a lot more family-friendly.”Pete says they are also keen to encourage people to use alternative transport to get to the festival so they can enjoy a wine and beer without worrying about drink-driv-ing. He says biking along the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail or taking a bus are two al-ternatives while they are also encouraging campervan owners to consider staying the night at Middle-Earth Vineyard.“Everybody is concerned about the new,

low alcohol limits so we wanted to actively promote safe alternatives. It means people can enjoy the wine and beer without need-ing a sober driver to get home.“The cycle trail goes right past Middle- Earth so it’s really convenient. Biking to the festival is also part of the Nelson Bikef-est which starts this month.”Rotary is also providing security for cars and bikes left at the vineyard on Sunday night for anyone deciding to catch a bus or ride home. The bus service will be operat-ing between Nelson and Brightwater with picks up from all SBL Service bus stops on the route as well as outside the Richmond Holiday Park, Three Brothers Corner, Hope Store and Eden Rd. The bus will leave the Nelson SBL Depot at

10.30am and Stoke at Songer St corner at 10:50am. It will leave Brightwater at 4pm, 5pm and 5.30pm.Pete says they have a good line-up of Nel-son entertainers for this year’s event in-cluding Urban, Kramit, Paul Madsen and Antoni Neal. There will be the usual wide range of wine, beer and food stalls at the event which last year raised $29,800 for the community. Tickets can be purchased from for $15 from Colour Plus Richmond, Haven Real-ty offices in Nelson and Richmond, Wake-field Supermarket, Brightwater Motors, Specsavers in the Richmond Mall, Village Cycles in Richmond and Paper Plus Nel-son. Tickets will be sold at the gate on the day for $20.

The Tasman Skatepark Tour concluded in Richmond with another year of grinds, jumps and flips.Young people came from all over the region to compete in the event which included competitions for BMX bikers, skateboarders and scooters, with junior, senior and open sections.Competitors are judged on many factors such as style, tricks and skatepark utilisa-tion. Tom Bassett-Eason, 13, represented Takaka and took out the first place prize for senior BMX.

He says he put a lot of preparation into practising for the event. “I just go to the skatepark everyday and I have my own dirt jumps in my backyard.”He says he had been riding for seven years and loves competing. “I come here every year and just do the best I can.”Tom also competed at Mapua, Takaka, Tapawera and Brightwater competitions, scoring enough points to be crowned overall BMX champion. Tom will receive a $400 Giant Method BMX.Kelsyn MacDonald, 12, of Tapawera won the scooter championship and Reggie Mcdonald, 11, of Takaka won the skate-

board championship.Corey Muir, 12, of Nelson says he wasn’t too sure how he went after his scooter run, but was thankful of his supporters.“When you fail a trick, sometimes you fail a whole run.”He says he was lucky to land his final trick. “I landed my last trick. I don’t usu-ally land that pri/whip/air.”Event organiser Paul McConachie says it was another successful year for the event and it was great to see the youth utilising the skateparks. “The skatepark fraternity is strong, with a bunch of more experi-enced riders showing great support.”

Driver spins out of control in Lee ValleyA teenage driver narrowly missed hitting peo-ple at a popular picnic reserve on Sunday as her attempted burn-out spun out of control. The 19-year-old driver attempted to do a burn -out while leaving the Lee Valley picnic area at around 5pm but she lost control of the car.It spun out of control, “careered” across the car-park and hit a parked vehicle before going over a bank.Police are investigating the incident and speak-ing with witnesses. Constable Peter Jackson, of Nelson, says the reserve was packed with cars and children and it was sheer luck that only one other vehicle was hit during the incident. The 19-year-old woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries and police are awaiting the results of a blood alcohol test.It is unclear if her injuries resulted from the crash as witnesses also reported she was in-volved in a scuffle with a group of people im-mediately after the crash at the reserve.

The cowboys and cowgirls rode into town to compete in the action packed annual Richmond Rodeo last Saturday. The sunshine was out in full force and so was the crowd at the Richmond A&P Showgrounds. Rodeo Secretary, Tina Angus-Phyn, says there were a record number of entries this year and the standard of stock was very high. “In terms of standard for competition, we have had the best we have ever had in Nelson this year, with North Islanders coming down chasing national titles”, says Tina. For one Wai-iti family, Rodeo is in the blood, with three generations being in-volved in the event on Saturday. The late Leo Nisbett had been involved in ro-deo since 1973 and was president of the Rodeo Club until his passing. His wife, Sharon, is now treasurer for the club and son Ben is a pick-up rider. Ben’s six-year-old son, Dustin, also competed on the day, in the calf ride.Ben remembers always being around ro-deo and grew up travelling with his dad to competitions and has continued that tradition with his own young family. He still competes and trains three times a week for pick up riding and practices stock work. His wife Sarita and their two children, Dustin and Lexie often join him on an evening ride.

“Dad taught me a lot about rodeo and hopefully Dustin will compete one day plus Sarita and Lexie will do barrel rid-ing. It’s an adrenaline rush when you are out there doing it”, says Ben.The event organized by the Richmond Rodeo Club included bareback riding, saddle bronc, calf roping and riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team rop-ing, steer riding and the ever popular bull riding. “For a small club, we put on a big event, which is only possible thanks to all of our sponsors and the community. We have volunteers from Christchurch, Blenheim, the West Coast and some of them we don’t see for a year but they all turn up to help out on the day”, says Tina.

Local boys Marty and Wayne McCor-mack, took home the team roping win-ning prize, with Marty roping around the head and brother Wayne around the heels.Barrel racing, a female only competi-tion, received record entries this year with riders from all around the country competing in the event that sees them riding in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels as quickly as possible. The most popular event on the day how-ever, was the bull riding and this year’s thrills and spills didn’t disappoint with big eight-second bulls on show. Dar-ren Bird outclassed his colleagues from North Island to take out the prestigious event.

The 100th anniversary of the first bat-tlefield death of a New Zealand soldier in World War I, will be held at St James Church at Ngatimoti on February 5.Twenty-two-year old Private William Arthur Ham from Ngatimoti was fatally wounded from a ricocheted bullet which struck his neck in Ismailia in Egypt. Wil-liam, who was a member of the New Zea-land Expeditionary Force, died from his wounds at Ismaila Hospital on the evening of February 5 and was buried the following day at the Ismailia Civil cemetery. William was described by his command-

ing officer, Major Cyprian Br-ereton, in a letter of condolence to William’s mother as “an ideal soldier... in action splendid, happy and cool”.He was born in Ireland and was the oldest of a close-knit Irish Protestant family of six boys, emigrating to New Zealand with his parents, William and Hester. The family travelled on the RMS Athenic, the very ship that transported William to Egypt 11 years later. William enrolled at Orino-co School in May 1905 and was likely to

have attended St James Anglican Church, which was the hub of community life in the Motueka Valley. William worked at a sawmill and later drove a horse-drawn grocery van servicing the area for Rankin and Sons of Mo-tueka. He was a labourer for the Waimea County Council survey team at the time of his enlist-ment.William was one of 14 vol-unteers from Ngatimoti who signed up for the war.

Of those first 14, 11 were killed in action or died of wounds, one died of sickness and

only two returned to New Zealand again. The commemoration of William’s death is being held by the New Zealand Defence Force in conjunction with the Motueka Memorial RSA, Tasman District Council and Ngatimoti community. The 2/4 Battalion of the Royal New Zea-land Infantry Regiment will be assisting with the ceremony on behalf of the NZ Army. The service is being held as part of the na-tional WW1 100 commemorations that mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. It will start at 11am at St James Church on corner of Waiwhero and Thorpe-Orinoco roads.

GREY POWER BATTLE: Nelson Grey Power president Neville Male says he will walk away from the organisation if he loses a vote of con-fidence in his leadership. Neville says he’s been the victim of “dirty tricks and character assas-sination” by a “rebel” group of members. The special AGM will be held at the Suburban Club on Thursday at 5pm.

RESCUE HELICOPTER: The Nelson Marl-borough Rescue Helicopter is on track to ex-ceed last year’s rescues for the month of Janu-ary. At the time of print, the helicopter had attended 57 jobs compared with last year’s figure of 53 for the same month. Rescue pi-lot, Tim Douglas-Clifford says it is the busiest time of year for the helicopter team, due to an increase in the number of visitors to the region.

One of Richmond’s well-known identities, Ted Cur-rie, passed away just prior to Christmas, aged 88. Before he died he talked with Waimea Weekly about his memories of growing up and living in Richmond. In 1927, Ted’s father Dr Wil-liam Currie, purchased a medical practice and property in Richmond, now known as Washbourn Gardens. Wil-liam, who was working in Hamilton, brought down a wife, daughter and twin boys with him. At the time, the population of Richmond was about 750, a far cry from to-day’s figure of around 14,000. In those days it was a rural town, with Queen St having a chemist, a hairdresser and around three grocery-style stores. George and Edward streets were just being opened up for housing and there were seldom any cars on the road.William, an avid gardener, was responsible for a lot of the planting on the property and used to keep a hoe beside his front door, so he could weed if a patient was late. He also kept a cow which he milked every morning and evening.Ted lived in the house with his twin brother Hugh and

older sister Kathleen, who kept a very protective eye over her, often mischievous, younger brothers. They had fun playing in the grounds of the property but also worked hard, helping to maintain the gardens and were paid one shilling per bucket of weeds. “We were a little naughty and unrestrained as our mother had passed away at a young age, so we were able to get away with quite a lot. They were very carefree days and overall, good memories,” Ted recalled.

He attended Richmond School, then later Nelson Col-lege and remembered joining his father on his afternoon pa-tient rounds. They travelled across the dis-trict in his Plymouth Airflow car, which was very rare for those days. It was a hard time economically and many of his father’s patients could only af-ford to pay for their visits with meat, fruit and vegetables. “A lot of young people played sport but I ran a mile from it, as it didn’t suit me. I was always out in the garden and

Bu-nga and Nuttavut Krataitong, owners of Chai Yo Restaurant and Takeaways in Rich-mond and also Chai Yo Takeaways in Nelson, would like to wish all of their loyal customers a Happy New Year.2014 was a busy year for Bu-nga and Nuttavut who have established two new restaurants in Blenheim while their dedicated team con-tinued to operate the Nelson and Richmond businesses. Although they have missed hav-ing regular contact with their loyal local custom-ers, Bu-nga says she is delighted that the team have continued to operate the restaurants so well, ensuring the continued support of the local community. “We’d particularly like to thank our faithful customers and wish them a happy year in 2015,” says Bu-nga. “I have really missed having regular contact with everyone, but it is great to catch up with them when I get a chance to come home to Nelson.”As soon as you step into Chai Yo you’ll notice the welcoming environment that owner Bu-nga Krataitong has created as well as the finest Thai cuisine. Authentic in taste and prepared

with passion and precision, the food will take your taste buds on a trip to Thailand. Chai Yo is hugely popular with locals for being the only local eatery to serve unique dishes like crunchy

chicken with creamy co-conut sauce and crunchy chicken with sweet soya sauce. “We are thinking about updating our menu soon, and we’d love to have some feedback from customers about what they would like to see on our menu. If you have any ideas, please make sure you let the team know,” invites Bu-nga.

It is important to Bu-nga and the Chai Yo team to support the local community and they like to give back to the people who support them. Their loyalty cards are one way of doing this and in the past they have regularly supported local teams, individuals and charities in their fundraising efforts by offering vouchers for raffles and quizzes. If you are planning a fun-draiser in 2015, talk to the team at your local Chai Yo to see how they can help. Bu-nga’s cell phone number is 021 142 6492 or you can email: [email protected]

DESIGN & BUILD-FACTOR

Richmond identity recalls a small rural townand enjoyed joining my father on his patient visits around the region, I got to know the district very well.” It was very common for col-lege children to take the train to school. It ran from Glenhope through to Nelson however, Wil-liam insisted Ted and Hugh ride their bicycles to Nelson College each day, no mean feat over un-sealed roads. On the odd occasion they were allowed to take the train they would hear the train whistle blowing as it departed Hope Sta-tion and would run down to meet it in lower Queen Street. After leaving Nelson College, Ted studied dentistry at Otago Uni-versity and established a dental practice in New Street, Nelson with Hugh. He met his future wife Barbara, on a skiing trip with the Nelson Ski Club and they continued their friendship when she made an appointment at his dental practice. “The appointment was put into my brother’s book but he had an inkling I liked Barbara and moved it into my book.” William died in 1939 and own-ership of the Washbourn prop-erty was passed to his widow, and then, in turn, to Ted and Barbara, who worked hard to maintain the garden that had been created by the doctor. He regarded Rich-mond as a safe and happy place to

live and bring up his three chil-dren, Margaret, Alastair and Ian. The couple sold a large part of the three acre grounds surrounding the house to the Tasman District Council in 1976, and the rest of the land and house was sold to council in 1987. However, they didn’t move very far. While doing the dishes one day, Barbara heard a hammer banging. She looked out of the kitchen window and saw some-one putting up a ‘for sale’ sign on the hill nearby which was an ani-mal paddock. They bought one of the sections above the stream, built a home on the site and lived there throughout Ted’s retire-ment.

Sunday’s Sarau Festival will not only cel-ebrate the Moutere’s blackcurrant harvest but will also commemorate the men from the district who fought in World War 1. Mapua’s Eileen Thawley has been compil-ing information on all the soldiers which will be displayed in a history tent at the fes-tival. She hopes people with connections to the soldiers will visit the festival and read about the transport ships, war grave data as well as the mayor’s speech given when the soldiers departed Nelson. Festival coordinator Jenny Leith says, that along with the Moutere’s history, plenty of other activities will be on offer for every-

one to enjoy. Celebrity chef, Steve Richards from award winning café Jester House, will be cook-ing up some favourites and two interesting guests will also speak. Brand manager for Frucor Beverages, Brooke Bayliss-Browne will talk about the use of Stevia in food and beverages and Claire Dallison, New Zea-land Tall Black Manager will speak about Sujon powder and its use with top end ath-letes.There will be over 100 stalls including arts, crafts and food from the district. Enter-tainment is sponsored by Ribena and fea-tures Trudi Wilson and Jasper, the Raijin

Taiko Drummers, Ella Doty, Ceol River, Voila and the Motueka Highland Pipe Band playing throughout the event.

The children’s play area has been upgrad-ed from last year and includes a new Kids Zone, where young ones receive a stamp to play within the safe child-friendly zone while parents relax nearby. The blackcurrant cooking challenge re-turns with six creative categories spon-sored by Barker’s of Geraldine and the ever-popular book stall will be bigger and better than ever with a large array of books for sale. The Sarau blackcurrant festival and country market will be held this Sunday at the Moutere Hills Community Centre in Upper Moutere from 3pm to 9pm. Entry for adults is $5 with free entry for children.

Huge support for Archibald familyMonique Bergman

Tyrell Archibald and his family have been over-whelmed at the generosity of local companies and individuals who have offered their services to help out with the family’s house build in Ma-hana. Waimea Weekly reported on Tyrell last week, who has sadly been diagnosed with termi-nal cancer and wishes to build a home for his young family. Several companies pledged their support, in-cluding Phoebe Guthrie Riordan putting on a variety show at The Playhouse at the end of February with 100 percent of door sales donat-ed to the family, Kleenaway Services donating a builders clean and Ruby Tuesday’s Hairdressers in Richmond holding a raffle which raised over $200 for the cause. As well as these, numerous building companies have jumped on board to help, with Advanced Access Solutions providing seven tonnes of scaffolding, Tasman Roofing supplying the fascia, guttering and roof, Think Water Tanks and Rounce Project Solutions assisting with water tanks and septic systems, Higgins and CJ Industries with concrete, Bayleys Motueka of-fering to purchase a dishwasher and Wakefield Quarry offering rocks for landscaping. Friends and family of Tyrell say there have been so many more offers of help and they would like to thank everyone who has contacted them for support.

Thank you:I had reason to use both the After Hours Medical Centre and Acci-

dent and Emergency in Nelson, while I was here briefly. I found both places to be well run and efficient, but most of all I found the staff excellent. They were very patient, friendly and professional as well as personable. I have never heard so much laughter in an A&E before.Thank you for taking good care of me and well done Nelson for having such excellent facilities. Fiona.

Fences needed for Noddy Train:Have to agree, the Santa Parade is more dangerous than the Nod-

dy train ride. James Musso.

Miserable bastards!Rayon Mackenzie.

Pretty sure it only moves at walk-ing pace. What’s the problem?

Caroline Mew.

How many children have been killed on this noddy train? Why

fix something that is not broken? Can our children not have fun in this world anymore? Antoinette Wood.

Too many damn rules alright... It’s got to stop, its bloody ridicu-

lous, who the hell are these people who make these rules? Why do they think

they can lord it over everyone and think their way is it? Christine Busch.

Pathetic. Too many stupid rules in this society. Kay Williams.

Ridiculous - parental responsi-bility abrogated once again. This

could see the demise of a well-meaning Lions project, designed to give pleasure to others. Anne Alan.

Put a fence around Santa Parade. Yep, that sounds stupid and so

does this stupid new rule. Let’s just leave our children in a padded room with electronics in their face. Having real fun might kill them. Helen Patterson.

Blackcaps play at Saxton Oval:Couldn’t think of anything worse. Sitting in sun watching

cricket all day. We have fantastic day at the river and made water slide. Kids played own cricket with a stick and ball. Now that’s a day well spent. Jo Bishop.

We could only watch the game for the last hour. Perfect timing!!

Very exciting at the end, really enjoyed it! But I can imagine being there all day. Martine Kessler.

It was a great day out. Beauti-ful weather and great entertain-

ment. Kelly Oliver Craig Bartlett.

Grey Power:When is Nelson Grey Power vice -president [Kevin] Gardener go-

ing to release the legal opinion prom-ised to members before the aborted Special General Meeting, to suppos-edly endorse their unconstitutional ac-tions in trying to dismiss the president, Neville Male. “It will be available in 36 hours”. Well that has long passed and we the members who are paying for this legal opinion want to know what the opinion states. Are the claims of the “rebel group” that the vote of no confidence in the presi-dent held on 24 November 2014 au-tomatically invoked clause 10.5 of the constitution, dismissing the president immediately, endorsed? Have all the “rebel” committee meetings held since the 24th of November complied with recognised NZ meeting practices and procedures and are constitutional? Why are there no minutes available for the members? And, most importantly, did the “rebel group” have the authority to dismiss the association secretary with-out notice or meeting natural justice requirements? The more this “group” does, the worse the situation is getting. Time they all resigned and let Neville and positive people get on with promot-ing Nelson Grey Power.Dan McGuire.

Richmond Riding for Disa-bled’s new riding coach Kym Murdoch’s first job will be to get the horses ready for the new term which starts at their Champion Rd grounds on February 9.Once the RDA’s 12 horses and 65 students are back in the saddle, Kym’s next prior-ity will be recruiting more volunteers to help run the group’s day to day opera-tion. Kym, who moved from Christchurch to start her new job last week, says they presently have 20 volunteers but desperately need more.“We have 20 volunteers but we are always looking for more,” Kym says. “We can’t function without our won-derful volunteers.“You don’t have to be a hors-ey person to help out because there’s so many different jobs to do around here. We need people to lead the horses, muck out, groom, maintain equipment and the grounds and come in at weekends to check the horses.”

Kym, who has “been around horses all my life” and has three horses of her own, says another project they are working on is organis-ing their annual summer fair

and garage sale to be held at the Champion Rd grounds on February 28. The fair is the group’s biggest fundraiser and Kym says they would welcome donations of goods

for the garage sale. Anyone who wants to donate goods for the garage sale or is interested in volunteering to help the Richmond RDA can contact Kym on 544 9860.

There’s more to diamonds than meets the eye and with a brand new qualification under his belt, RoCS gemmologist, Brett Grimwood can tell you everything there is to know about that sparkling rock on your finger. The Post Graduate Dia-mond Technology course is offered by the Gem-mological Association of Australia and is a year-long course covering eve-rything from diamond formation in the earth’s crust through to differing types of diamonds, dia-mond qualities and caus-es of diamond colour-ing, faceting diamonds, diamond history. It’s as comprehensive as it gets and is an internationally recognised qualification that only around 600 people worldwide have achieved in the ten years it’s been available. Brett took on the challenge of the year long course to further his knowledge in the world of gem stones, a knowledge which can now be used to reassure their customers that what they are buying is the real deal. With a pass rate of 40-50 per cent, there are only three peo-ple in New Zealand who hold the qualification, including Brett. Normally a classroom based di-

ploma, Brett completed the course in six months through correspondence, which involved re-searching and presenting pages of detailed in-formation in response to questions on topics covering everything within the industry. He

was also required to write a thesis paper on the topic of Blood Diamonds and The Kimberley Process. Having this qualification makes RoCS the home of the number one diamond specialist in the South Is-land, and having trained for four years and quali-fied as a gemmologist, Brett can tell you an aw-ful lot about more than just diamonds. Not only can RoCS test any stone with their in-

store gem stone lab, and grade and appraise dia-monds, they are also the only trade recognised jewellery valuers, as well as experts in design-ing and creating stunning jewellery for any taste using their own unique custom cut gems from Germany. With the qualifications to back their services, RoCS are your one stop jewellery shop in the top of the South Island.

Brett Grimwood is now one of only three people in New Zealand to have passed the Post Graduate Diamond Technologies Diploma.

New Year’s resolutionsHow to get your finances in shape and stick to it!

Q: School lunches are costing me too much, how can I make them cheaper?

A: Get back to basics and save yourself cash - lunchbox tips that won’t break the bank:

Freeze: yoghurt, home-made muffins, baking etc. has the added benefit of keeping the lunchbox cool.

Make your own jelly with fruit. Make popcorn - can be flavoured to taste. Cut raw veges into shapes/batons (e.g. carrot,

cucumber) or try a handful of cherry tomatoes. Buy fruit that is in season to get the best deal. Sandwiches don’t have to be boring; try getting the

kids to make their own. Get creative: make ordinary foods look interesting

with different shapes and presentations. Find inspiration online.

Snack-foods can be bought in bulk. This cuts costs and packaging waste.

Use leftovers such as bacon & egg pie.If time and fussiness are issues, get the kids to pack

their own lunches. They will enjoy choosing their foods from the options you give them.

Garin College student Logan Ford is embark-ing on another big musical adventure joining the National Youth Brass Band at its annual summer camp and tour this week.Logan was selected for the band after a series of nationwide auditions held earlier this year. Although Logan is just 15, it will be the third year the cornet player has been in the band which is made up of the country’s most talent-ed under-23 brass and percussion musicians. Logan, who plays the cornet, joined the rest of the band members for a five-day summer camp at the Woodbourne Air-base near Blenheim that started on Sunday. The band then embarks on a tour giving concerts in Westport this Thursday, Nelson on Friday and Blenheim on Saturday.“I’m already doing about an hour’s practise a day,” Logan says. “We were given the concert programme just before Christmas so I’ve been playing all the music since then.“I’m really enjoying it. There is a piece that has been written just for us and it will be premier-ing in Westport so that’s exciting.”National Youth Brass band manager Dr Garry Brown says the concert programme is titled Summon the Heroes and will include a bracket of pieces in remembrance of 100 years since the Gallipoli invasion. He says there are “some wonderfully talented musicians in this group” and four of them will be featured as soloists with the band. Garry says many of the band members have gone on to professional careers in services bands, the New Zealand Symphony Orches-tra, professional conducting and the National Band of New Zealand. The Nelson concert will be held at the Theatre Royal starting at 7pm on Friday. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at ticketdirect.co.nz and cost $25 for an adult, $10 for a chil-dren with concessions $20.

Nelson Drag Racing and Nel-son Speedway are making the most of their event clash to bring the public one Saturday of petrolhead heaven. Satur-day, January 31, will see Nel-son Drag Racing host a round in the NZDRA National se-ries, while Nelson Speedway will be running their Nelson Club Championships. At-tempts to avoid clashing with other events isn’t always pos-sible, but with a great two-for-one deal, enthusiasts, or even those just curious about the world of horsepower and wheel stands, can make the most of seeing some impres-sive drag cars and the bash and crash of a night at the speedway. The NZDRA national series is a collection of race meetings around New Zealand that drivers compete in to earn

points for an overall winning total. There are five rounds in the series, one of which was hosted in Christchurch last weekend, and it will see locals and around 20 pre-entered cars from out of town converge on the Motueka airfield this weekend, as points are gained not just from racing, but from travelling to events hosted around the country. With around 13, 200 people involved with

Speedway throughout New Zealand, it’s a huge sport and popular form of entertainment; brought to its fans every week over the summer season from around 24 venues nationwide. If anyone out there hasn’t experienced the thrill and adrenalin of an evening at the Speedway, the two-for-one deal put on by Nelson Drag Racing and Nelson Speedway might be the perfect introduction. champs will be offering local drivers the chance to contest the title of club champion in their class. Classes racing on Saturday will include the Superstocks, Streetstocks, Sidecars and Pro-duction Saloons, in a bid to have their names go up on their club’s honours board. Meanwhile, a handful of cars from the TQ class will be up from Christchurch, racing the second round of a three round series, and some Stockcars and Youth Ministocks running as well. Nelson Drag Racing will also be holding its Hot Rod and Muscle Car Challenge at the same time, featuring the best in lean, mean, muscle machines from around Nelson, West Coast and Blenheim. Sponsor of the muscle event, Ian Grif-

fiths Motors, has put up a cash prize for first and runner up in this class, which runs to a DYO (Dial Your Own) format. “This round of the NZDRA national series will be a big turnout because they are up to their fourth round, so drivers are analysing their cur-rent tally and realising they need to travel to gain more points,” says organiser and mechan-ic for Gourdie Automotive, Clinton Lochead. It’s also the second round Nelson has held in a bid to encourage drivers from the North Island to travel and race in the south. The series runs throughout their season, which kicks off just af-ter Labour weekend and comes to an end around Easter weekend.

The national series is the most im-portant part of the New Zealand Drag Racing calendar because it gets everyone touring around the coun-try, which would not be possible for most regular race meetings. The chance to have the first place marking of 1NZ on the side of their car is also a big deal for all serious drag racers, and is just as important as making re-cords. Nelson’s most recent successes in the national series have come from a strong drag bike presence; Andy

Urwin-Wells, Craig Adams and Mark Pahl are all chasing points this sea-son, after Andy won it last year, with Craig runner-up. Race day starts around 10:30-11am with practice and qualifying runs, giving drivers a chance to get to know the track and how their car performs on it. As the day goes on the track will improve and by 12pm the action gets underway. Those chasing points will be positioned on a ladder ac-cording to their performance in the

Youth Ministock’s racing at the Speed-way last year. Nelson Club Champion-ships is a chance for local drivers to get their name up on the clubs honours board.

qualifying passes, and from midday till around 4pm they will be whittled down until a winner is determined for each class of vehicle. The muscle cars race differently with drivers compet-ing to get closest, if not dead on, their pre-set time. “Drag racing is generally a popu-lar spectator sport because you can get close to the action,” says Clinton. “This is especially exciting if there are some good competition vehicles rac-ing from out of town that will offer the noise and the smoke screens that car enthusiasts love to see.”The races this weekend will incorpo-rate a number of classes, including street bikes and fully-fledged drag bikes, to muscle cars, street cars, door cars and full drag cars. “Pirtek Rac-ing has a very cool Camaro that’s just been remodelled and had a lot more horsepower put into it; there are some really good cars in that Superstock class, they’re always good to watch, es-pecially for the public who can recog-nise what they are, like the Camaro or Holden Monaro, and when you watch them race you get an understanding of the speed they’re going,” says Clin-ton. “There is a good field of super-

charged outlaw cars hopefully coming too, if they’ve managed to survive last weekend in Christchurch.”Another added bonus for those look-ing to get up close and personal with some of these power houses is an open door policy in the pits. While speedway let’s you see the cars before and after racing, the drag races wel-come people to walk around the cars as they’re being repaired or getting some pre-race maintenance, or even have a word to the drivers about what makes their car tick. This weekend offers the best of both worlds and is sure to be an action-packed day at the races. If you’re into drag racing but haven’t seen much of the speedway, take the opportunity to see them both in one, on January 31. Tickets for the drags are $20 for one person or $40 for a family and mean you can enjoy the thrills and spills of the speedway in the evening for free. Speedway carnage will begin at 7pm on Saturday evening on Landsdowne Rd, so pick up a ticket now from the Richmond Mall, Armstrong Smart Security in either Motueka or Tahuna, or from the gate at the drag races in Motueka.

Upgrades to coastguardboat will help save livesJacob Chandler

New satellite navigation equip-ment and two new motors will help Nelson coastguards reach emergencies at sea quicker and more accurately.Funding was secured through Pub Charity and the Lion Foundation for the two new motors. This replaced ageing motors that had completed 1611 hours of use.Coastguard president Graeme Richards says, due to their age, the old motors were becoming unreliable.“The last time we had them on during practise training we went to start them and they wouldn’t start. Water had got-ten into the starter motor.”He says the hydraulics were also beginning to fail and the starboard motor was leaking.

“We’d be out ready to do a res-cue and the engine alarms were going off. We would have to stop everything and try and figure out why. When there is somebody in the water and time is of the essence, then you can’t afford that sort of thing.”A new navigational system was also installed by Haven Marine through the Coastguard’s ownfundraising.Graeme says the new electron-ic systems will allow the team to work more efficiently.“It’s an intuitive system, we’ve always run two chart plotters but if one shut down then they both shut down,”The touchscreen controls will help the team to easily find in-formation on weather patterns and tide, as well as find and contact nearby commercial ships for help.

Graeme says one of the big ad-vantages is that it cannot only tell how far away the ships are, but also their speed. He says the new systems were much easier to train on.“The old ones were a night-mare. If you hadn’t had a call-out for a couple of months then it was almost like learning how to use them again.”Although the hull of the boat is15 years old most of the fittings in the craft are all new and up to date. The Inflatable buoy-ancy collars were replaced last winter.Graeme says coastguards are often called out for tows due to flat batteries or dirty fuel.A crew of four people is the minimum requirement for a tow, with more coastguard members required for search and rescue missions.

If you want to work in microbiological and chemical laboratories and prefer actually doing things to sitting in a classroom, Real World Education’s programmes may be right you. Programmes are as short as 18 weeks; some are longer. Background mate-rial is delivered by highly-interactive, online video lessons. Participants receive equip-ment and supplies for some at-home prac-tice. However, most practical training is in real, professional laboratories around New Zealand, including Fonterra and Nelson’s own Cawthron. Participants learn how labo-ratory employers actually want things done. A programme with Fonterra (Clandeboye) placements starts 02 February 2015. A pro-gramme with Cawthron placements starts 16 March 2015. Typical participants have NCEA Level 2 and some chemistry knowl-edge; however, applicants are considered in-dividually. Participants earn national science qualifications. Space in courses is very lim-ited and can fill-up quickly. Scholarships are available. Information is available at www.REAL.ac.nz or by ringing 03-975-JOBS.

Ruby Bay artist Lisa Chandler is used to working on a large scale paintings but this month she will be super-sizing her work when she creates a 33 square metre mural on the wall of the new residential develop-ment Sussex Mews in Nelson.Sussex Mews developer James Purves ap-proached Lisa last year with the idea of creating a mural on the large wall of the complex on the corner of Nile and Sussex streets. James had seen Lisa’s paintings in art gal-leries around Nelson and knew that her urban themes would fit in well with the modernist architecture of Sussex Mews.“I was keen to support a local artist and

to add to the vibrant outdoor art scene in Nelson, particularly an artwork that re-flected Nelson’s increasing connections with global cities,” James says. Lisa says she has been keen to do a super-sized painting since creating her 2.5 metre by 7.6 metre painting for the Cruel City ex-hibition at the Suter Public Art Gallery in 2012. The new work will be 3 metres high and 11.6 metres long and will be able to be seen from the footpath and road adjoining Bett’s Car Park as well as from the Cathe-dral Park. The project is supported by Scott Con-struction, Nayland Scaffolding and Resene Paints Nelson.

Boat handling is a fine art and it is always a pleasure to watch those who are good at it.Safe arrival and departure is an under-stated goal and one which many fail to achieve due to either poor assessment of the risk or under-rating the influence of the tide and currents.During the last week we experienced four young people making poor decisions:1. Their boat wasn’t fit for purpose. 2. No lifejackets were worn. 3. They seriously under-estimated the difficulty of the short distance they intended to travel and the effects of wind on tide. There were also two young women swept under the bow of a yacht due to poor as-sessment of their drift and leeway, whilst in the current of an incoming tide. I re-viewed this incident on camera and also saw their coach briefly trapped by the same vessel and tide. Luck – that is the only thing that saved any one of those lives this week. Lucky they were seen, lucky calls were made, lucky help wasn’t far away.During February and March, Port Nel-son will experience some of the largest tides I have seen in five years. Along with the tide come the stronger currents. Stay out of the water mid tide if you are not a strong swimmer, know where your ves-sel’s leeway is taking you, keep a sharp look out.

Young volleyball players have been learning from the best with a top line-up of coaches helping the Nelson Bays Volleyball Association run a three-day holiday skills camp at Saxton Stadium. About 90 school-aged children from around Nelson attended last week’s camp which ended on Friday. New Zealand Youth Women’s team coach Wayne Stirling of Waikato headed a stellar coaching staff that also included Wellington’s Des Kerekere and national men’s team captain Pat Shone of Nel-son.“We have been running these summer camps for a number of years and we’re lucky enough, this year, to have some excellent coaches,” Nelson Bays Volley-

ball’s Pam Brodie says. “We’ve also got some of the local coach-es who are helping out and they’ll learn a lot too.”Pam says the coaching clinic was di-vided into two groups, with year 5 to 8 children attending a morning session and the year 9 to 13 students spending all day at Saxton Pavilion. It was aimed at teaching the game’s basic skills which were put into practise in a series of games. “We are having fun here too but the em-phasis is on learning skills. “Young kids need to learn volleyball balls skills from day one and I think that’s part of the reason that Nelson does so well at a national level.”

A former Waimea College student, Wayne says young players benefit from coaching clinics because they “get more touches of the ball.” “Volleyball is a sport where you need a lot of contact with the ball and they get plenty of that here. “The clinics are also an opportunity for young players to hear a different voice and perhaps some different ideas.”Wayne, who left Waimea College in 1978 and now teaches at Te Aroha College, says he is impressed with the standard of young volleyball players in Tasman. “It shows the benefits of what is hap-pening in the schools and in the asso-ciation,” he says.

SEA SWIMMING: Nelson swimmer Luke Kelly won the 3.3km race at the State Sea Swim Capital Classic held in Wellington on Sunday. Luke won in 40 minutes 42 seconds.
