Baseline ICT Standards

What are Baseline ICT Standards?

Baseline ICT standards refer to the minimum attainment of generic ICT skills applicable across subjects that can support students in learning and to prepare them for future needs.

Also has a cyberwellness focus: Ethical and legal use Safe and responsible use

Generic ICT Skills

Basic Operations e.g. accessing drives and opening files Learning with Searches e.g. use of online search

engines to look for researches, data, images, etc Learning with Text e.g. use of Microsoft to write, edit

and even format essays Learning with Multimedia e.g. Powerpoint presentation,

digital story Learning with Spreadsheet e.g. use of Microsoft Excel to

do statistical analysis such as median Learning with Communication Tools e.g. email, blogs,

wikis Learning with Data Collection Tools e.g. use of Data

Logger to collect or transfer data

7 generic IT skill areas over 4 progressive key stages

Key Stage 1 – Primary 1 to 3 Key Stage 2 – Primary 4 to 6 Key Stage 3 – Sec 1 & 2 Key Stage 4 – Sec 3 to 5/Pre-uni Different attainment level at each key

Example

Pupils are expected to be able to create documents for different purposes such as newsletters, reports and pamphlets at the end of secondary school education. Thus, they progress from creating short texts in Key Stage 1 to short paragraphs with punctuation and symbols in Key Stage 2, then to creating pages of text in a document in Key Stage 3, culminating in the application of these skills in Key Stage 4.

directly access a variety of sources and produce multimedia elements

Pupils will be able to: 1. Locate, evaluate and synthesize reliable

information from multiple Internet sources 2. Communicate, collaborate and distribute

collect, export and process different kinds of data and media

Key Stage 4 Use online means frequently to

exchange data, work together and share media within and beyond the classroom

Select and use appropriate ICT tools to measure, collect and process data to support an investigation (e.g. collect sound and images to recreate rainforest ecology online)

Are our students ready for the world of tomorrow out there?

They need I.T. for learning in the future! The world tomorrow will continue to

favour people who are I.T.-literate. To excel in the world out there tomorrow,

students need width and depth in your I.T. skills proficiency.

21st Century learner is I.T. literate Baseline ICT standards is an

important strategy of mp3 MOE’s target for all schools

90% of students attain 95% of Baseline ICT standards

Baseline ICT Standards & Affordances of ICT

Certain ICT tools and skills present a more natural fit in certain subjects, topics and activities.

In order for students to harness the affordances of ICT in T&L, they have to first possess a range of ICT skills

A wide range of different ICT tools such as word processors, spreadsheets, social networking sites, collaborative writing tools, multimedia presentation and publishing tools will help to engage pupils in their learning while offering them opportunities to practise ICT skills.
