The 2013 Awards Night held last Wednesday proved to be awonderful evening where we celebrated student successes andachievements. It was clear to all who attended that our studentshave achieved great things this year in a range of pursuits -cultural, sporting, academic and service.

I want to congratulate each and every student at MorayfieldState High School for your success in 2013. As part of myaddress, I highlighted a number of student successes acrossall year levels. This success would not be possible without thesupport of the whole school community, both in the classroomand at home. To the parents and families of Morayfield, I thank

I hope many of you took the opportunity to visit the EYEBALLExhibition in the Morayfield Trade Training Centre prior to ourAwards Night Ceremony. The talent of our students on displaywas just amazing, across many mediums.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY FRIDAY 25 OCTOBER

On Friday 25 October the school celebrated the achievementsof teachers as part of World Teachers’ Day. This year’s themewas “Quality Teachers – inspiring young people to leadsuccessful and productive lives”.

The Student Representative Council, in conjunction with theMorayfield State High School P&C Association, provided abreakfast for our dedicated teachers as a small token of theappreciation of the hard work our teachers do on a daily basis.

DANCE NIGHT 2013

Congratulations to all students involved in Dance Night. Whatan outstanding end to a very busy and successful year. Notonly was I thoroughly entertained, but I was impressed by yourprofessionalism and the standard of your performances. Thisyear students studying Dance, Drama and Multi-Arts Studieswere joined by the Dance/Drama Troupes, Pacific Islandstudents and students from Morayfield East State School to puton a fantastic night showcasing their work throughout the year.

STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE CERTIII

Congratulations to Taylor Osborn, Jennifer Heddles, Jacky TeWano, Maddy Walcher, Stephanie Van Deyl and Jessica Curtiswho have all completed a Certificate III in Children’s Services.This is a significant achievement and has involved studentscompleting in excess of 200 hours industry placement andcompletion of 15 modules of theory.

Taylor, who has aspirations in the Childcare Industry, hasapplied for a position in the Childcare Centre where she hascompleted her placement and will commence her Diploma thisterm. Jennifer Heddles and Phoenix Richardson have beenemployed by their centres. Phoenix is set to complete herCertificate III this week and will also commence the Diploma inChildren’s Services.

MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHEONOnce again, students undertaking studies in VocationalEducational studies in Hospitality will leap into action for theMelbourne Cup Carnival by providing an elegantly themedbuffet luncheon. The running of the 153rd Melbourne CupCarnival allows our students the opportunity to continue theirpractical and theoretical studies within Hospitality. Theluncheon is a prestigious event for the students and staff alikewhich enables everyone to immerse themselves in the socialand relaxed racing atmosphere that the Melbourne Cup offers.

LIBRARY NEWSOur online library is now available. All students may access thisboth at school and home. If you have a problem with loggingin please come and see us in the library. It is accessed throughthe Learning Place using your normal user name and passwordand is being updated regularly. It will be a valuable place to visitfor assignment and study help.

New fiction titles are coming into the library every few weeks.Our latest addition is 15 volumes of Manga which has provenpopular with many readers. Two devoted readers have alsostarted the Anime club which meets in M02 every secondWednesday and is open to anyone who is interested.

The latest editions in some popular series are also with us. Forexample - Heroes of Olympus - The House of Hades and TheRoyal Ranger from the Ranger’s Apprentice Series. We havealso completed the Chronicles of Lumatere series with Froi ofthe Exiles and Quintana of Charyn on our shelves.

ENGLISH FACULTYYear 10 English curriculum has undergone some huge changesthis year with the implementation of the National Curriculumthrough the resources of Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C).While it has been a learning curve for our teachers andstudents, it seems students have enjoyed their experiences.The last unit in which they will be engaged is the study ofdocumentaries. This is an excellent transition into senior Englishsince the unit is about understanding how texts are constructedand manipulated to position viewers in specific ways.

This leads me to a reminder to parents and students in Year10: ensure you have chosen the correct English subject for Year11 and 12. Students need to discuss their choices with theirEnglish teachers. If they have any concerns they can speak withthe Guidance Officer or the Head of Department English, MrsTorrens in P block.

ICAS PUT US TO THE TEST

In term three English extension students participated in theInternational Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)to gain a measure of their own achievement in an externaltesting situation. The comprehensive results have now beenprovided to teachers, parents and students detailingachievement in reading and language skills. Whilst the test hasacted as excellent preparation for future tests, it has highlightedthat our students have strengths in syntax, and factual reading.

At Morayfield State High School we have a large IndustrialTechnology Department (ITD). This is an area of our school thathelps provide students with practical learning opportunities.However the underlying literacy and numeracy is sometimestaken for granted. The ITD faculty and Literacy and NumeracyTeam are endeavouring to highlight the literacy and numeracyskills required for successful completion of ITD projects anddesign activities to explicitly link them to the curriculum.

You can provide valuable learning opportunities for yourstudents by asking them to assist in the preparation andcosting of projects around your home. These tasks teach yourstudents the real life values associated with numeracy andliteracy. In most of these activities students are given theopportunity to apply numeracy skills to meaningful situations.This is a fantastic way to underpin their learning and encouragethem to value the essential skills they possess. These projectsalso provide a fantastic opportunity for our students to sharpenliteracy skills by applying correct terms to the tasks you areundertaking. For example, knowing what type of timber to buyfor a certain project and using the correct name for it.

Some of the areas that may assist your students are illustratedin the problems below. You may like to help your students byworking through these examples together. The first student tobring correct solutions to the Literacy and Numeracy Coach inN block Staffroom will receive a prize!

ESP provides youwith an opportunity to do a university subject during SemesterOne of Year 12, therefore extending your knowledge and givingyou a chance to experience university study, assessment andcampus life. Students who successfully complete the Programwill be eligible to receive one bonus point towards yourUniversity entrance rank through University of Queensland’sBonus Rank Scheme . In addition, the majority of ESP studentswho later enrol in a relevant UQ degree may receive credit fortheir completed course.

Special Education Program students within the Morayfield SkillsGroup undertake a variety of authentic work/employment tasksaround the school environment in preparation for post-schoollife. This term the students have worked collaboratively witheach other and the Hospitality Department to design, prepareplant and up keep a herb garden.

40 HOUR FAMINEDaniel Pennington from World Vision made a presentation onparade 14 October to thank all students for their participationin the 40 Hour Famine this year. On Monday we receivedan Outstanding Achievement Award for raising over $4000towards this worthy cause – we are very proud of our studentsand how they give back to many in need.

TOUCH UPDATESeptember and October has been a busy time for MorayfieldState High School’s touch teams. Friday 20 September sawBribie Island State High School play host to a large numberof teams competing in an invitational tournament to promoteenjoyment in the sport and to support preparation forQueensland All Schools. Morayfield State High School sentalong Open Boys, Open Girls, 15 Years Boys and Year 8Mixed teams to represent the school. Both Open teams andthe 15 Years Boys all finished runners-up in their respectivepools; each going down to some polished competition fromSt Columban’s teams. The Year 8 Mixed team enjoyed theexperience and finished with a win in the crossover rounds.This competition gave our teams some valuable game timeleading in to the premier competition on the touch calendar:Queensland All Schools.

Whites Hill Sporting Complex hosted teams from all overAustralia and South East Asia in this year’s All Schools Touchcompetition. Teams competed in close to 1000 games acrossfour days (10-13 October). All of our teams represented theschool well. The 15 Years Boys and Open Girls were both

unlucky to not progress through to the playoffs, each losingonly one of their five pool matches and drawing another. TheOpen Girls gameplay was especially impressive consideringover half the team was made up of Year 10 or younger, andthey only conceded a handful of touchdowns across the wholetournament. The Open Boys enjoyed the most success;qualifying the top of their pool undefeated and comfortablydefeating Chanel College in the final 16. Their top 8 finish sawthem come up against Kirwan State High School in the quarterfinal. It was at this point the fairy tale ended; Kirwan’s OpenBoys were a polished and professional team and beat our boyssoundly. This was still an excellent result for the MorayfieldState High School boys, which places them in the Top 8 in thecountry.

Our students have represented the school responsibly and withintegrity and we should be very proud of all students’ efforts.I personally cannot wait to see each team go one better nextyear.

NEWS FROM INDIGENOUSDEPARTMENT

ARTIE – ACHIEVING RESULTS THROUGHINDIGENOUS EDUCATION:

The focus for Semester 2 is to get students to attend everyschool day to achieve best possible outcomes for their future.Students are being rewarded when they have reached their 90percent Attendance Term Challenge. In Term 3, 46 studentsachieved 90 percent Attendance and will be going to WhiteWater World with all the other successful Queensland ARTIEstudents on Friday 29 November.

The Term 4 challenge was launched by Scott Prince from theBroncos who encouraged students to celebrate their learningand attendance by being successful and achieving 90 percentattendance. Young people who are successful will receive abeach towel designed by a past ARTIE student.

Twenty-three volunteer tutors from the University ofQueensland have been working with our Aboriginal and TorresStrait Islander students in the English and Maths classes toimprove their numeracy, literacy and understanding ofcurriculum. Both students and tutors have really enjoyedworking and achieving together.

For the second year we are participating in the Pride LettermanJacket challenge and the majority of our Year 10 students havesigned up for Term 4 and Term 1 2014. To be successful in thechallenge, they must have:

ARTIE has launched the Ripple Effect which will assist studentsto transition from Year 12 to employment, training or study.Seven of our Year 12 students have successfully enrolled intothis program.

MURRI HEALTH SCREENINGS

At the being of Term 3 Murri Medical conducted a verysuccessful health screening program with our Indigenousstudents. They are returning to our school on 7 and 8November to provide free medical and dental screenings forALL our interested Year 12 students. Students do not haveto be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander to participate in thisprogram. Letters inviting students to participate will come outshortly.

SHOUT OUT FOR FAMILY MEMBERVOLUNTEERS

We run a variety of small and whole school cultural workshopsand programs and would love our families to help by runningor assisting with some of these workshops. If you or a familymember are able to run or contribute to a workshops exploringAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytelling, traditionalgames, painting, dance, music, men’s and women’s businessand leadership, please contact me by email:[email protected] , phone: 5428 5555 or getting yourstudent to give me a note or message with your contact details.Next year we are keen to start a weekly Indigenous DanceGroup and would love a keen family member to assist.

Turn your phone into a life saver

The Australian Red Cross has released a free first aid app forsmartphone users. The app guides users through the correctresponse for many incidents including heart attacks, strokes,diabetic episodes along with the more common burns, sprainsand strains. The app is easy to use and features vital life-savinginformation, videos and quizzes to test your first-aid knowledgeon correct treatments for children and adults. Learning theskills to save a life through first aid training is one thing, butremembering what to do when under pressure is where thisfirst aid app can help most. This new Smartphone app isavailable from www.redcross.org.au/first-aid-app.aspx or theGoogle Play and Apple app stores.

• No school suspensions

• Minimum of a ‘C’ Maths and English Effort andBehaviour Marks

• Attendance of no less than 90% with a minimum of80% physical presence at school
