In March, the Queensland Government revealed which changes it is committed to implementing. The new system will take effect for the Year 11 cohort of 2018 (current year 9s). These changes will include: The removal of the OP system and the QCS test. Student will instead be given an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) A reduction in the number of assessment tasks undertaken by students from up to seven to only four. One of these four assessment tasks, per subject, will be an externally written and marked assessment piece. This differs from our current system where Mueller College teachers write the assessment tasks undertaken by our students. The external exams will count for 25% of the final mark for a subject except in the case of Maths and Science subjects where it will count for 50%. The changes are significant but will not dramatically affect the already quality teaching and learning practices which occur in Mueller classrooms every day. Whilst the modifications are still 18 months away from commencing and 3 and a half years from having students graduate under them, there is much we are doing in preparation. A large number of Mueller staff are already involved in professional development and trials of the various initiatives which will comprise the new system. This term, our Year Eleven students will be involved in External Assessment trials of Maths B, English and Graphics which will afford us the opportunity of testing our own processes to determine how best to prepare the students for success. These trials will count for marks for the Year Eleven students but will not count towards their eventual OP scores. There will be further opportunities for our teachers and students to prepare for this change over the next 18 months – opportunities which we welcome. We are committed to providing a well-rounded education and achieving the best outcomes for Mueller College students. This requires us to be adaptable and responsive to change whilst remaining committed to the unchangeable and important elements which make up our school.

Todd Langford - Head of Teaching and Learning

Over the last couple of years there has been a review of the Queensland schooling system which has resulted in a range of suggested changes to the Senior (Year 11 and 12) schooling system. These modifications will affect how students are awarded their exit grades and earn entry into university courses. In March, the Queensland Government revealed which changes it is committed to implementing. The new system will take effect for the Year 11 cohort of 2018 (current year 9s). These changes will include:

• The removal of the OP system and the QCS test. Student will instead be given an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)

• A reduction in the number of assessment tasks undertaken by students from up to seven to only four.

• One of these four assessment tasks, per subject, will be an externally written and marked assessment piece. This differs from our current system where Mueller College teachers write the assessment tasks undertaken by our students.

• The external exams will count for 25% of the final mark for a subject except in the case of Maths and Science subjects where it will count for 50%.

THOUGHTS FROM JENNY

“IT’S OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY, BUT IT’S NEVER OKAY TO STAY THAT WAY”

I first read those words in an essay written by an 18 year old Ethiopian refugee girl. Knowing a little of her story (and she’d experienced a lot of pain in her life), they struck me as being very wise words.

It doesn’t matter who we are, we will all experience pain at sometime[s] in our lives. We will feel grief, sadness, anger, loss, confusion and/or other emotions. It’s important not to try and deny those feelings, or escape from them. Instead, when we are hurt and distressed, we need to allow ourselves the privilege of feeling those emotions.

God has given us emotions and they’re not bad. They may not be pleasant (after all who likes pain), but they are good for our mental and emotional health. We need to allow our children to express their feelings – maybe even encourage them to express them. In my own personal life, I’ve found that allowing myself to experience my emotions (rather than trying to escape from them) enables me to move through difficulties a little more smoothly, and probably a little faster. Evidence from numerous studies supports that too. If we try and bury our emotions, they may resurface with a vengeance at a later time.

Allowing ourselves to experience our feelings in our own way and time doesn’t mean they’ll disappear, we’ll move in and out of feeling that emotion, but it is far less likely to become a permanent state for us.
