What is Build a Blinkie? This is where you get to build one of those LED flashing things. You might have seen a few at various conventions and other places that enjoy a bit of hands-on make-and-take activities. Over the years a couple thousand blinkies have been assembled.

You start with the kit, and use the tools we have in the room. When you are done, you have a working blinkie. We have blinkie Techs to help you debug any problems.

The average Blinkie builder takes about 75 minutes, and if it is your 1st time using a soldering iron we suggest you start with a beginner’s kit.

Can’t get enough of the Blinkies? Decided to take a kit home, but need tools?

Soldering Tools

We have been very pleased with the temp controlled soldering station. Several people asked if we sell them so we picked up a few extra on our last order.

An excellent choice for doing a couple of kits at home.

The 6 LED circle was a the 1st blinkie design we created. It’s a classic, we are out of circuit boards. When ordering new boards we made a number of improvements, so many that we are calling it a new product. Learn to build a blinkie. It’s a 2.0” by 2.6” with a mounting pin on the back side. The LEDs are controlled by a PIC processor. Multiple blinking patterns controlled by a pattern selection button.

Dwayne has always wanted to make an LED cube after seeing them on the internet. The soldering of LEDs to a wire lattice just seemed too fragile. Dwayne learned the circuit board maker could do sophisticated board cuts. The design of the Cube is 8 circuit boards, 3 upper levels, 1 bottom driver board and 4 legs, creating a 3.25 x 3.25 x 3.25 cube. With 64 RGB LEDs Dwayne added 4 driver chips to help the PIC drive the 192 LEDs.

This blinkie comes with and is powered by a USB wall wart that plugs into 110 volt. You will see CR2032 battery clips on the silkscreen because the 4x4 RBG matrix uses the same circuit board. Batteries just don’t last long enough driving 192 LEDs.

Looking for something really spectacular? Yes, we designed the 12 LED Circle Blinkies so a second board can interlock with the first, forming a sphere of 24 LEDs. But it gets better. There are multiple LED placement options for each board. Create a truly unique Blinkie!

The Simple 4 Dogtag

Down at Blinkie Labs, wefound we had extra boardmaterial as part of a futureproject. Rather than wasteit, we took it as a challenge.

What you see here is the result. A 4 LED dogtag blinkie, which can have either single, two-color, or RGB LEDs. Since it is designed to be worn with a chain or lariat, you can see where we got the name.

It’s a 3.15 square board, with a 4x4 array of RGB Leds. You might have noticed it is the same board we use for the base of the 4x4x4 cube. The design has two buttons to select the pattern

Our first 4 RGB Blinkie was so successful, we have almost sold out!

We took the opportunity to make some improvements over the original design, resulting in the new and superior 5 RGB Blinkie. In addition to the extra LED, improvements include longer battery life and wider circuit traces for more beginner-friendliness. Our biggest improvement was solving the round-peg-in-a-square-hole problem. A clever bit of engineering allows either square RGB LEDs *or* round 10mm RGB LEDs to be used. The 5 RGB is a 1.5” by 2.6” double-sided circuit board with a pin-back for wearing, which will display various user-selectable patterns.

If you are a blinkie connoisseur, we have a new showpiece blinkie for you! Watch as colors wash from side to side and corner to corner, fading in and fading out. 64 RGB LEDs, each individually firing to create the ultimate in mesmerizing patterns.

Features of the 8x8 RGB Matrix include a display that is slightly larger than the board, so kits can be tiled to create a larger panel; full USB interface to provide both power and programming, in addition to the internally stored patterns; and three different power options - standard AAA battery, rechargable AAA, or a AA USB power source. The 8x8 RGB matrix display is based on a 2.4” by 2.4” double sided circuit board.

So, for a technical challenge, Dale asked how many LEDs can you put in a line using the our smallest PIC, and the 19 LED Stick was created. It’s a 0.6” by 8.25” double-sided circuit board with a hole for hanging from a lariat.

It has 19 LEDs controlled by a PIC processor. This allows for some fairly intricate blinking patterns. And yes, there is an IR emitter and receiver for two way communication to other blinkie boards.

We always try to support different levels of assembly skills, this time we think we nailed them all with a single design.

Starting with a 3 inch circle, we placed 12 LEDs around the edge, a very easy to solder board. Dale wanted support for 10mm LEDS, so we added support for them too! With so many assembly options, take a look through the options to decide how you want to assemble yours.
