Thank you to the many volunteers in our Parish who give of their time, talents and gifts to make our community as vibrant and engaging as it is.

If you would like to volunteer at one of our many ministries, please fill in one of the pamphlets from the Welcome Desk in the Narthex.

The first step to volunteering at St James Parish is to attend a Volunteer Induction meeting which are held twice a year. If you are a new volunteer and would like to be involved in one of the ministries at St James, or a current volunteer who did not attend our last Volunteer Induction, we would like to invite you to the next Volunteers Induction and Information Evening on Thurs 08 Mar at 7:00pm.

Serving in a ministry at St James will require you to attend this meeting for induction and all current volunteers are expected to attend a Volunteer Induction.

VOLUNTEERING AT ST JAMES PARISH

With the start of the new year, we have once again restarted our Prayer List for those in our community who are sick.

People will now remain on the Prayer List for the Sick for 4 weeks, unless otherwise arranged.

PRAYER LIST FOR THE SICK For those who currently serve as Altar Servers and their parents, there is a meeting at St James Church on Sat 03 Mar at 10:30am.

ALTAR SERVERS MEETING

To all current members of the Piety Stall Ministry, Fr Jude has organised a meeting on Tues 27 Feb at 7:30pm in the Narthex to discuss this ministry. Please contact the Parish Office on 9748 6800 this week to rsvp.

PIETY MINISTRY MEETING

GOSPEL REFLECTION

A common thread runs through all three readings today: a parent’s sacrifice of a beloved child. Many may find troubling God’s testing of Abraham’s faith and obedience to such an extreme degree. But the story finds new meaning in the context of the other two

readings.

In language that echoes Abraham’s near-sacrifice of his son Isaac, St. Paul makes clear that what God did not in the end require of Abraham, God did require of himself: to redeem the human race, he “did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all” (Rom

8:32).

The Transfiguration focuses upon the same divine gift. Shortly before, Peter had responded to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?”, by correctly confessing him to be the Christ. But when Jesus went on to detail what kind of Messiah he will be—namely, one who will work salvation by entering into the pain and suffering of this world—Peter

protested, earning a sharp rebuke.

Now the Father’s voice, affirms the true messianic status of Jesus: “This is my Son, the Beloved”, but adds, “Listen to him!”—listen, that is, to what he has been saying about going up to Jerusalem to suffer and die. Being God’s “Beloved Son” does not exempt Jesus from suffering but draws him to it in order to save

the world.

The disciples, and all of us, as we continue our journey through Lent, are invited to enter ever more deeply into this mysterious blend of divine love and suffering that lies at the heart of the Paschal Mystery.

Fr Brendan Byrne SJ

During Lent there will be no First Friday Adoration (Fri 02 Mar) as instead we will have The Way of the Cross every Friday in Lent.
