I have six children, thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.” As she was compleng her statement, she cast an eye over the papers and notes in front of the psychologist and said, “That all looks very important. What do you do?” The psychologist thought, “Oh no! If I tell her what I do, I’ll be saddled with three generaons of problems for the remainder of the flight!” However, she decided to tell the old lady what she did and what she was about to do. 30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B 28th OCTOBER 2018

Dear Parishioners,

As a young principal, I received the following advice from a seasoned veteran - “Always link your subject matter to your audience.” This coming Thursday we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, when we celebrate the lives of saints both known and unknown. Many of us in the Church today have been inspired by the manner in which our parents and grandparents have lived their lives.

Italians have a cherished proverb that says, “If nothing is going well, call your grandmother.” The following story might give an insight as to why this proverb is cherished.

An educational psychologist was on her way from Perth to Adelaide to conduct a series of seminars and workshops for parents who were experiencing difficulties with their children. Sitting next to her on the flight was an eighty-year-old woman who was prone to short outbursts of conversation. During one such occasion she declared, “I’ve had a wonderful life. I have six children, thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.” As she was completing her statement, she cast an eye over the papers and notes in front of the psychologist and said, “That all looks very important. What do you do?”

The psychologist thought, “Oh no! If I tell her what I do, I’ll be saddled with three generations of problems for the remainder of the flight!” However, she decided to tell the old lady what she did and what she was about to do. As the old lady settled back into her seat, her response was, “Now, isn’t that interesting. If you want to know anything, just ask.”

Grandparents have the experience and knowledge that come from surviving a great many years of life’s battles and, hopefully, they have the wisdom to know when to share this experience and knowledge with their grandchildren. Jimmy Carter once observed that, “Because grandparents are free to love, guide and befriend young people without having to take daily responsibility for them, they can often reach out beyond pride and fear of failure

and close the gap between generations.”

Besides being the keepers of family traditions and history, grandparents provide grandchildren with examples of hard work and family loyalty. Grandparents’ stories contribute to family identity by sharing knowledge about relatives, important events, family traditions, the grandparent’s childhood and the childhood of the grandchild’s parent. As these stories are passed on, the grandchild can gain a positive image of their place within the family and a positive image of ageing.

When we become parents, we automatically give our parents a new position in life, that of being grandparents. At the same time, we give our child the added security of belonging to an extended family. The relationship between grandchild and grandparent can be very life-enhancing: a grandchild can bring love, energy, optimism, laughter, youthfulness and sometimes purpose to the life of their grandparent. At the same time, a grandparent can provide maturity, knowledge, stability, a wise ear and unconditional love to a grandchild.

Nowadays, being a grandparent might not be as simple as you would like, due to divorce, remarriage or geographic distance. However, whether you are a grandparent, step-grandparent or even a grandparent raising a grandchild, you are a most important person in your grandchild’s life and, as you well know, it’s not only Italians who ring their grandmother when things aren’t going so well.

“God, Father of us all, we are thankful for our life and for the privilege to be parents and grandparents. We pray for patience, guidance and wisdom to use our life’s role, for our own benefit and the benefit and enjoyment of our extended family. Amen.” Mike Quinn (Principal, St Mary’s Primary School)

REMEMBRANCE MASS

ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE MASS: Friday evening the 2nd November at

7.00pm (All Soul’s Day), the Ipswich Catholic Community will gather to

celebrate and to remember our loved ones who have died. Please join us at St

Mary’s Church, Elizabeth Street, Ipswich for a Mass, with a supper to follow. If

you have time and can offer a plate to share for supper it would

be appreciated. We look forward to being with you to celebrate

this special Mass for those we miss and love.

REMEMBERING OUR LOVED ONES: For the month of November there will be a book in each church where you are invited to record the names of your deceased relatives and friends. This book will be placed strategically to honour the life they share in the resurrection. Envelopes for November offerings are available at the front door of each church.

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020: Pope Francis is encouraging our Church to be a listening (synodal) Church. We’re invited to speak freely and honestly, sharing from our hearts and to listen humbly – to each other and to the Spirit. In our encounters with one another, we encounter and discern what God is asking of us. Our listening and dialogue sessions have been set for each Church in November. Please consider this as a personal invitation to be involved. We want to hear from everyone! For more information on the Plenary Council, please visit plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au

SACRAMENTS FOR CHILDREN IN 2019: Children who are in year 5 and older will be invited to celebrate the Sacrament of First Penance (Confession) in early March 2019. The Sacrament of Confirmation for children in year 3 will be celebrated in August. The children in year 4 will be invited to prepare and celebrate for their First Holy Communion in mid-May. Further information regarding the exact dates will be advised in the coming weeks. The parish looks forward to celebrating these milestones with the families of the Ipswich Catholic Community. For further information please contact Bernadette McAndrew at the Parish Office on 3281 2133.

ROSTER FOR NOVEMBER: The new roster will be completed and sent this week via the ministry computer programme.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN GOING ON A PILGRIMAGE TO ROME

AND ASSISI IN 2020? (late September for three weeks):

Fr Stephen will lead a group of parishioners to the sacred sites.

Keeping costs to a minimum, would be under $4,000 per person.

Please register your interest at the Parish

Office if you are interested in more

information. An information evening will be

held soon if there is enough interest.

BREAK OPEN THE WORD/DAILY MASS BOOK: Each year, we are given the opportunity to order these books. ‘BREAK OPEN THE WORD’ is a great help for Readers in preparing for their Ministry of proclaiming God’s Word, and also for parishioners who would like to prepare for the weekend, reflect, and gain a better understanding of the Readings. At just $25.00 - this is a great resource. The DAILY MASS BOOK is also available at $25.00.

TO ORDER - PLEASE WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE FORMS ON THE CHURCH NOTICE BOARD NOW, OR PHONE THE PARISH OFFICE.

ORDERS CLOSE 11 NOVEMBER 2018.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Last Wednesday evening Catechumens, Candidates and sponsors gathered for a discussion on the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Fr Stephen led the meeting with a brief introduction in the celebration of the Liturgy, with a focus on the celebration of the Eucharist. The theme of ‘Gather, Listen, Celebrate and Go’ was used to simply explain the four key moments of the Mass.

As regular Mass goers, can we identify these four moments? We will continue to explore in more depth the celebration of the Mass during the coming weeks. The next gathering will be held on the 7th November. Please keep the catechumens and candidates in your prayers.

FRANCISCAN CALENDARS FOR 2019 are now available

from the St Mary’s Piety Stall and all churches and the

Parish Office, great price and a

lovely Stocking filler or Christmas

gift. Only $6.00. Proceeds go to

help the Franciscan Missions in

PNG and Timor Leste.

DEANERY VISITATION will occur next week (1-3 November). Please keep this in your prayers over the coming days.

The Episcopal Council will be meeting with Staff, Priests, School Principals and Representatives of the Animation Group, Finance Committees and the HIVE.

There is still time to respond to the questions they have asked us; drop your responses into the Parish Office by Tuesday.

Questionnaire forms are still available from the Parish Office.

THE EUCHARIST INTENSIFIES GOD’S INDWELLING: It was that very Jesus who became for Francis, and all his followers, the closeness of God. For Jesus was and is the closeness of God. Jesus is God become one of us, like us in everything but sin. He is the mystery of the incarnation of God, and that mystery was deepened for Francis with the knowledge that this Incarnate God can become present in us

through the sacramental grace of the mystery of the Holy Eucharist wherein we eat the body and drink the blood of Christ whose effect is to intensify the indwelling of God in us. - from the book Surrounded by Love: Seven Teachings from Saint Francis.

This week, two of our parishioners, ANNE COSTELLO and LAWRENCE RISATI, graduated from their Hospital Chaplaincy course. A special Mass was held at St. Stephen’s Cathedral on Thursday night, and with family and friends present, their achievement was formally recognized and celebrated. We congratulate them, and pray for them, as they continue in this special ministry to which they have been called.

MEALS ON WHEELS: Each year our parishes are asked to supply Drivers and Helpers for two days in December and three days in January to give the regular Meals on Wheels volunteers a well-deserved break.

The dates for the Ipswich Catholic Community this time are:

DECEMBER 2018: MONDAY (17th) and TUESDAY (18th);

JANUARY 2019: MONDAY (7th), MONDAY (14th) and TUESDAY (15th).

You simply arrive at the Meals on Wheels Kitchen (South Street) at 10.15am, and you are then given the meals and a list of recipients (usually about 1½ - 2 hours).

To volunteer please add your name and contact to the list on the notice board at any of the churches or call the Parish Office.

So please give it some thought and volunteer where you can. (Families who have volunteered in the past, have found it a great experience for the children – being able to deliver meals to usually older people who just love to see the children helping).

MISSION MASS: Children from our 4 Parish Primary Schools attended the MISSION MASS in the Cathedral last week. In this photo children from Immaculate Heart are seen with the Archbishop in the Cathedral. These children read the Prayers of the Faithful, and were wonderful ambassadors. The children met and talked with the Archbishop, and were awed by the Cathedral and the Cathedral precinct. Thanks to each of our schools (St Brigid’s, St Mary’s, St Joseph’s , Immaculate Heart, St Edmund’s and St Mary’s College) for all they do for Catholic Missions.

Each of the Schools were represented at the recent 24 Hours of Joy. The Schools have regular liturgies and School Masses in classrooms and in the Church. Thanks to each of our APRE’s (assistant Principal, Religious Education) for all the work they do to enhance ‘Catholic Identity’ in our Schools. We are blessed to have six wonderful APRE’s – incidentally, they meet with Fr Stephen each Term to plan the Religious Life of the School. The Principals of our Schools meet with Fr Stephen individually regularly, and also meet together with Fr Stephen each Term. The Ipswich Catholic

Community is very fortunate to have wonderful schools (Primary and Secondary) – our School Communities are very grateful to Parishioners who have worked so hard over the decades to build the schools into the great places they are today. Thank you for what you have contributed to your School.
