2.1 Description

The 320N Navigation Echosounder is a device incorporating digital electronics controlled by an embeddedWindows-based computer. The 320N is configured to automatically run the main control application witha useful playback application available on the Windows desktop. See D101-03175 for instructions on theusage of this support application.

The main system control is provided using a combination of a client and server application set. The serverprovides the connection interface to the embedded signal processor module. The user interface client or third-party clients can control and acquire data from the module via the server’s network interface The client onthe 320N is a Windows program that provides access to all the necessary controls for standard operation ofthe echosounder and any data recording activities onto the PC. When the PC is powered on, the NavControlClient application should automatically invoke itself; however an icon is also located on the desktop tomanually invoke the program if necessary. When the client is invoked, it automatically invokes the serverapplication; again an icon is located on the desktop to manually invoke the program if necessary. After theconnection to the server is completed, the client presents a window with user controls, status information andlarge display area for the echogram data presentation. The Main Control bar contains eleven buttons for easyaccess to the main control features typically accessed during standard operation of the echosounder. A blankdisplay area for graphical presentation of real-time received data, and a grid scale bar for the datapresentation occupies the bulk of the main application window. The echosounder automatically startsrecording data to the built-in hard drive in a specific folder for easier retrieval and archival purposes.

NOTE: Data stored on the hard drive in the D:\Data folder will need to be backed up and removed from thisfolder on a regular basis. The D:\Data folder can hold up to 30 Gigabytes of information. A warning whenthe drive space used is greater than 80% will occur every time the echosounder is powered on until thecondition has been addressed.

4.3 Minimum Depth Limit

The Minimum Depth Limit is used to set the minimum depth at which an echo can be digitized. This is avery important control. Improper use of this control can result in improper or unsuccessful bottom detection. In situations where there are deep scattering layers, thermal clines or groups of biological organisms, it isnecessary to adjust this to a value deeper than the undesired layer otherwise the unit will return a false-bottom echo from the intermediate layer. As the vessel returns to shore and port, this value must be reducedto a very shallow number otherwise a valid bottom return will not be properly digitized.

4.4 Pulse

The Pulse button will display a Pulse dialogue box which allows the operator to specify the pulse length (theduration of the transmit pulse) usually specified in milliseconds or fractions of a millisecond.

By specifying the pulse length, the operator indirectly specifies the bandwidth of the digital noise rejectionfilter applied to the incoming acoustic signal data. The filter bandwidth is usually set to the inverse of thepulse length (this relationship is true for the standard continuous wave (CW) signals, but not necessarily forthe CHIRP signals used in the very low frequency channels).

Normally, long pulses with narrow bandwidth filters provide better noise rejection in deeper water or noisyconditions, while short pulses with wide bandwidth filters provide better resolution when conditions permitor the water is shallow.

The signal data rate (in samples per second) is also related to the pulse length because of the Nyquistrequirement that the sampling frequency be at least twice the signal bandwidth.

4.5 Power

The Power button will display the Power dialogue box which is used to specify the transmit power level ofthe pulse being transmitted. Power levels are controlled by changing the duty cycle of the switchmodetransmitter output stage. Although high power signals will always give the strongest echoes, they alsoproduce more ringing and reverberation which may obscure the bottom echo in shallow water. Using highreceive gain in combination with high transmit power in shallow water may cause signal levels high enoughto saturate (overload) the receiver, which will mask any echoes.

4.6 Gate Width

The Gate Width button will display the Tracking Gate dialogue box which allows the operator to adjust theGate Width that is used by the bottom tracking algorithm to determine the validity of the current depth value. It is a depth variability tolerance value, defined as a distance above or below the current bottom depth trendestablished by the current and several previous samples. If the most recent depth value fits this establishedtrend to within the range defined by the tracking gate width, it is considered valid and is displayed. If a depthreturn falls outside of this range, it is deemed invalid and “-----" is displayed.

4.7 Gain

The Gain button will display the Gain dialogue box which allows the operator to control the analog receivegain of the channel. Reducing the analog receive gain is useful when sounding in extremely shallow water. This reduces the overall noise while not seriously affecting echo strength. Increasing the analog gain isuseful when sounding in very deep water.

The Auto check box located on the top of the dialogue box invokes Automatic Gain Control of the analogreceive gain which is the recommended setting for most operating conditions. The Automatic Gain Controlis active when there is a check mark in the check box. The actual Gain being used and the operator selectedGain are displayed on the status information dialogue bar.

The Process Shift parameter provides for additional gain in the digital signal processing software.Sometimes the Automatic Gain Control algorithm can force the signal processing module to overdrive, compromising the quality of the echogram data. A good rule of thumb is to start increasing the process shiftwhen the AGC has to push the gain level over 45dB. This adjustment should be done gradually to slowlyreduce the amount of analog gain required without applying too much digital processing gain (process shift).Applying too much process shift can cause the return echo to be saturated and distorted, compromising thedigitization performance of the system.NOTE: The Auto check box applies only to Gain. Process Shift is adjusted manually.

4.8 Range

The Range button will display the Range dialogue box which allows the operator to select the size of theactive window in the water column. The active window is the only part of the water column in which theechosounder operates. It is the portion of the water column which is printed on the hard copy recorder, andin which the bottom detection software looks for the bottom echo. The bottom must be in the selectedwindow for the echosounder to function. Eight ranges are available: 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and10000 metres (or feet or fathoms).

The Auto check box located on the top of the dialogue box invokes Automatic Range Control. TheAutomatic Range Control is active when there is a check mark in the check box. While it is active, it adjuststhe window range as well as the operational units based on the current bottom location to maintain the bottomat all times.

As the bottom increases in depth, the Automatic Range Control will increase the Range to prevent the bottomfrom disappearing off the end of the window. If the water depth increases to the end of the 10000ft window, the control algorithm will change the units from feet to fathoms, and adjust the range window to theappropriate end limit to maintain the bottom return but minimize the window size. As the bottom decreasesin depth, the Automatic Range Control will reduce the window size to allow for faster ping rates and dataacquisition. If the units are fathoms, it will switch to feet once the water depth reduces enough; this allowsfor better data resolution on the echogram chart.

The Setup Control bar is displayed below the Main Control bar and contains eight easy access buttons tofundamental setup controls for the echosounder. These controls are not normally accessed during standardoperations but are often adjusted when hardware installations are configured or modified.

5.1 Ping Rate

The Echosounder’s ping rate (number of transmit pulses within a given period of time; measured inmilliseconds between pings) normally varies dependent on the window range and the pulse length being used. In deep water, the ping rate is very slow, for example: one ping every 5 seconds for a range of 2000fm. Incontrast, the ping rate can be as much as 8 pings per second in very shallow water. This high ping rate maybe undesirable for some operational situations. The Ping Rate dialogue allows the operator to reduce thetime allowed between pings to a more suitable value. In deep water, the sounder will only ping as quicklyas the operational conditions will allow but as the water becomes shallower, the ping rate will be limited tothe value set in this dialogue.

A toggle button to change the operational mode of the NavControlClient application between the Full Screenand Standard Window mode.

The echosounder starts in Full Screen mode by default. In this mode, the operator cannot resize the clientapplicaion and does not have direct access to the background operating system. When the client applicationis terminated, it terminates the operating system with it.

The Standard Window mode puts the Client application back to a resizable window frame and allows access to the background operating system. This mode is useful for those authorized operators who perform datafile offloading and software upgrade operations on the echosounder. Only qualified operators should beprovided authorization to access this particular mode which is why this toolbar is password-protected.

2-1 EchoSimulator: Windows Installation / Firmware Upgrades

2 SOFTWARE DEFINITIONS

2.1 Overview

Knudsen Engineering Limited’s EchoSimulator uses software to perform its functions. This software includes a Windowsapplication of the same name used to configure the device and run tests. It also includes the firmware which resides innon-volatile memory of the device itself.

2.1.1 Firmware

The term firmware refers to the software which resides in nonvolatile memory within the EchoSimulator module. Upgradesand revisions are distributed periodically as “.bin" files which can be re-programmed into the echosounder module in the fieldby the user. 2.1.2 Windows Support Applications

The Windows application provided with the EchoSimulator are Windows compatible, and are installed with a standardSetup.exe process. This process is the same for upgrades to the software, with the additional step of uninstalling the existingsoftware beforehand.

The information contained in this document is proprietary data of Knudsen Engineering Limited. Any disclosure, use or reproduction of this information for other than thespecific purpose intended is expressly prohibited unless agreed to in writing by Knudsen Engineering Limited.

3 INSTALLATION / UPGRADE GUIDELINES

3.1 Initial Installation

A newly delivered EchoSimulator has the necessary firmware already programmed into it. The user only needs to load theWindows support application supplied on the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM contains a file called EchosimSetup.exe. Thisprogram, when launched, creates the directory and copies all necessary files onto the user’s hard disk. See Chapter 4 for acomplete description of the installation process.

3.2 System Upgrades

Occasionally, a system that has already been operating out in the field will be provided an upgrade software package toprovide additional operating features not available with the original software. If the EchoSimulator’s firmware is not at theproper revision, it will need to be upgraded. See Chapters 4 and 5 for detailed descriptions of the installation processes.

NOTE: When performing the upgrade, always upgrade the Windows software before upgrading the firmware. This willextract the necessary “.bin” file onto the hard disk required to proceed with the firmware upgrade.

4 PC SOFTWARE INSTALLATION

4.1 Setup Procedure

The CD-ROM provided either with a new system or in an upgrade package contains a typical Windows Setup(EchosimSetup.exe) installation program. For most Windows systems, this Setup executable will automatically run (autorun)when the CD-ROM is loaded in the drive. If it does not start automatically, simply run the file Echosim.exe.

Sometimes the upgrade package is provided by an e-mail or weblink download. In that case, the installer package filenamewill incorporate the release serial number: ie K206-0110-USB.exe. This is still a standard Windows executable and can berun the same as a Setup.exe file.

When the installer program is run, it displays a number of information and configuration prompts to allow the user tocustomize the installation process if desired. Customization of the installation should be undertaken by advanced users only. The normal installation process proceeds as follows:

EchoSimulator: Windows Installation / Firmware Upgrades 5-1

5 FIRMWARE INSTALLATION

A newly delivered EchoSimulator has had its firmware installed at the factory. Installation of new firmware is only necessarywhen important functional updates are available. Many times the Windows applications are updated while the firmware isunaffected. Any new installation package will specify whether or not a firmware update is required.

5.1 Upgrading the Firmware

The FirmwareLoader application loaded onto the PC by the installer package provides the interface necessary to upgrade thefirmware in the sounder channel modules. The steps to upgrade the hardware modules are as follows:

Step 1. Exit the EchoSimulator Windows application.

Step 2. Power cycle the simulator. The module will not be able to initiate the firmware loading operation if it hasalready run a ping cycle.

Step 3. Run the Firmware Loader application available under the Start -> All Programs -> EchoSimulator programfolder. It should detect the module in the simulator. If not, the Load Simulator Firmware option will bedisabled.

Step 4. In Firmware Loader, select Upgrades -> Load Simulator Firmware.

Step 5. The application should now provide a dialog box for opening the firmware file. Ideally, it will already belooking at the appropriate folder; if not, browse to the folder C:\Program Files(x86)\EchoSimulator\Firmware. Select and open the desired .bin file.

Step 6. The application will start the transfer of the firmware to the module. Once it is complete and has passed avalidity check, a dialog will appear asking for confirmation that you do want to reprogram the firmwarecontents in the module. Click on Yes to proceed.

Step 7. The application will display the programming status as it proceeds and indicate once it is completed if it wassuccessful or not.

WARNING: Do NOT turn off the power to the EchoSIM while the programming step is active or the memory in the modulecould be permanently damaged and require return to the factory for reprogramming.

The Firmware Loader simply replaces the contents of the on-board boot memory. The new firmware is not actually runningyet. The sounder will need to be rebooted to run the new firmware.

Step 8. Click Close and exit the Firmware Loader application.

Step 9. Power cycle the EchoSIM.
