Boscombe Regeneration Partnership – Performance UpdateTheme - Education and Attainment Period: July 2014 – Jan 2015Lead - Achieve TogetherVision:Improve Educational outcomes for local children

Objectives: Make sure local children have the best opportunities for learning Close the gap between children’s attainment in Boscombe and the

rest of the Town

OBJECTIVE [As above]Performance Update

Progress for period Jul 2014 – Jan 2015:

All Achieve Together schools from 2013/2014 remained Achieve Together schools in 2014 / 2015 (Boscombe schools are Avonbourne College, Harewood College, Bethany CE Junior School, St. Clement’s and St. John’s Infant School, and Kings Park Primary School)

There are now a total of 48 Achieve Together participants working in schools across Bournemouth and indicative figure for 2015/16 are that a further 40 will be joining us next academic year.

The Data Analyst has now completed the first phase of his work looking at school level data and identified the following for Boscombe:o There is a higher risk of pupils becoming NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) in Boscombe compared to

Bournemouth and national figures)o Pupils with EAL (English as an additional language) are underperforming at KS1 and 2 (Primary School age)

The Data Analyst will be working up until April 2015 looking at pupil-level data to identify underlying causes relating specifically to the pupils identified above so we can commission the most appropriate intervention

Schools were informed of these findings and between Sep and Nov 2014 researched how these issues manifested themselves in their specific settings. Achieve Together participants in these schools came together at an Innovation Day in Dec 2014 and produced comprehensive plans on how we would be addressing the issues in schools through a selection of Collective Impact Projects

Two Collective Impact Projects are currently running in Boscombe:o Immersion – giving teachers an insight into EAL experience. This will lead to subject specific leads for EAL, a ‘welcome’ support

pack by subject and language, CPD in EAL for all teachers in the school.o Motivation, Learning and Curriculum for disadvantaged year 9 girls. This will lead to a programme where the girls will be made to

consider sensible career choices and then get the opportunity to experience the work of the area they have chosen. In school attendance and performance of these girls will be reviewed and externally example of best practice, motivation and work experience will be provided.

The ongoing data analysis will continue to inform these projects, as will others from across Bournemouth and will culminate this year in a Showcase Event on July 9 2015 where the teams will be given the opportunity to pitch the success of their project to date and how this will be scaled up for 2015 -2017 and describe what resources and expertise they require to accomplish this. A pot of £50k will be available for schools to share.

Item 3.3

Other work includes meetings with organisations including Boscombe Children’s Centre and Place2Be

Scheduled work:

A Boscombe ‘virtual’ school report card is being produced to give a sense of the performance and issues facing Boscombe student residents

Recruitment is ongoing for next year’s participants Schools are being supported in the delivery of their Collective Impact Projects Other bespoke projects are to be identified to support the findings above Baseline data and impact measures are being identified so we can monitor the impact of the Collective Impact Projects

Risk:

Recruitment of participants for the Teaching Leaders and Future Leaders is still only indicative

Reason:

This is because with the small number of schools in our cluster there is a limited number of Middle Leaders and Senior Leader eligible for the programme

Concern:

This puts pressure on the Collective Impact Projects as the numbers of participants working on each project is low

Mitigation

We will align projects enabling some schools to work on a project collectively with other schools Previous participants still based in schools will be encouraged to support the projects
