    Role-play 2.

    Pessimist

You live in a small flat with your best friend. She suggested to let somebody livewith both of you because you dont have enough money to pay

TV ADDICT.Lets face it: you love TV because it is so entertaining butyour boy/girlfriend is complaining that you never do anything together. You see

her point of view, but (s)he has to understand that there are so many greatshows on TV [name a few] these days that it is painful to miss out on any ofthem. You are well aware that your partner is dissatisfied, but you have a greatidea: why dont the two of you watch TV together. After all, you are workinghard and you need to wind down somehow. Or is it possible that your life justplain too boring, thats why you need a substitute? Anyways, you know youcant lose him/her because of TV.

BOY/GIRLFRIEND.Theres no point in denying any more: yourgirl/boyfriend is a couch potato. (S)he would sacrifice your precious momentstogether for a TV show. But now its enough. If (s)he refuses to get up from thesofa and go out with you, its over. (S)he needs to understand that he is

wasting his/her life. Theres just so many things out there to see, and you bothseemed to appreciate the adventures you had together in the good old days. What has happened to you? Is it just what happens after so many yearstogether? Anyways, you also like TV, but there are other things besides TV thatwould be a sin to miss out on. Something must change!

TV ADDICT.You know you should be cramming for your languageexam because your job depends on it, but there are so many great shows on

TV that it just stops you from focusing on your tasks. Your private tutor wantsyou to work more, and sit in front of the TV less, but you assure him/her that

you have a great talent for languages, and you work best under pressure. Nexttime, you see him/her, you dont have your HW done, again. Your teacher iswilling to threaten you with a harsh punishment unless you change yourattitude. You dont want to lose your teacher, but just how important iswatching TV for you?

TEACHER.You like your student, but (s)he is an addict of TV. (S)he isabout to take a language exam which is important for his/her career, but (s)heseems to be ignorant of how high the stakes are, and does not care aboutstudying at all. You blame his/her TV addiction for his/her diminished motivation.

Youve tried to reason with him/her, but to no avail. Now youre ready tothreaten him with a severe punishment unless (s)he changes his/her attitude, and finally focuses on learning the language. It

is sometimes unavoidable to lose a precious student to get your message acrossto them.

It is not heroin or cocaine that makes onean addict, it is the need to escape from a

    harsh reality.Shirley Chisholm
