Exemptions at stake

As was the case the last two years, the winners of the VSGA Senior

Four-Ball Championship will earn exemptions into the upcoming

VSGA Senior Amateur Championship at The Homestead’s Cascades

Course, if they are not already exempt from qualifying for the cham-

pionship.

Sughrue attempts unprecedented double

Two weekends ago at Dominion Valley Country Club,

59-year-old Matt Sughrue (pictured) of Arlington was part of

the winning side at the 54th VSGA Four-Ball Championship,

teaming with Brandon Cigna to win the title by two strokes.

He’ll have a chance this week to make VSGA history. He’s

teaming with three-time Senior Four-Ball champion Keith

Decker at Wintergreen and will attempt to be the first play-

er ever to win both the regular and senior Four-Ball titles in

the same year. Decker has won nine Four-Ball titles overall

(six of them regular) and his seeking his fourth Senior Four-

Ball championship in the last six years.

37th VSGA Senior Four-Ball Championship » vsga.org

New champs will be crowned

Cam Young (pictured) and Steve Serrao, winners of the 2018 VSGA

Senior Four-Ball Championship at The Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, will

not participate in this week’s championship after Young withdrew due

to an injury. Young is also the defending VSGA Senior Amateur champi-

on, having defeated Mark Boedicker in last year’s title match at the

Golden Horseshoe’s Gold Course. Both sides that finished as runners-up

last year—Rich Buckner and Andy Heye, and Jack Allara and Jon

Zampedro—are in the field at Wintergreen. Serrao and Young were

attempting to be just the third side to repeat as Senior Four-Ball cham-

pions since 2000, joining Keith Decker and Pat Tallent and Dave King

and Tom Flory.

Match play prowess

Skip Zobel (pictured, left) and Dave Pulk (right)

won the final VSGA Senior Four-Ball Match Play

championship last year at Keswick Golf Club, out-

lasting Randy Newsome and Neil Davis in a thrilling

21-hole title match. Zobel is one of two past Senior

Four-Ball champions in the field this week, and is

the only player to have won both the Senior Four-

Ball Match Play and Senior Four-Ball Stroke Play

titles. (Keith Decker and Kyle Bailey have both won

regular titles in both formats). Pulk is a past Senior

Open of Virginia champion. Newsome and Davis are

in the field this week as well.

Notable...

» Chuck Brewer and Bert Allen of Forest won the last Senior

Four-Ball Championship contested at Wintergreen’s Stoney

Creek layout, shooting 132 in 2009 and defeating Dave LeClere

and John Price with a birdie on the third playoff hole. LeClere is

the only player from that group competing this week, having

qualified with Mike Howell at Laurel Hill Golf Club on May 8.

» John Cuomo and Tom Hackett won the title the only other

time Stoney Creek hosted, posting a 136 in 2003 to finish a

stroke clear of Vinny Giles and Tommy Kidd.

» Rich Buckner and Andy Heye are the only side to compete in

both the VSGA Four-Ball and Senior Four-Ball championships this

year. Keith Decker, Dave Pulk, Steve Serrao and Buck Brittain

also competed in the Four-Ball, but with different partners.
