Princess Anne Country Club
One of the Tidewater’s premier coastal clubs, Prin-
cess Anne underwent a total renovation in 2008,
when Pete Dye protégé Tim Liddy redesigned the
par-70 layout. The course meanders through sce-
nic neighborhoods lined by lush pines and crosses
several inlets and lakes. It embraces the land’s nat-
ural features.

A brand new champion
Lauren Greenlief, who has won the
last two VSGA Women’s Amateur titles,
is not in the field this week as she is
participating in the North & South
Women’s Amateur Championship in
Pinehurst. That guarantees that a new
champion will emerge this week at
Princess Anne, as no previous winners
of the event are in the field.
A long time coming
This will be the sixth VSGA Women’s
Amateur to be contested at Princess
Anne, but the first since 1957. The win-
ner that year was Mary Patton Janssen,
who won the first of her six VSGA
Women’s Amateur titles by defeating
Madelyne Egenroad 6 and 5 in the
final. Janssen was a member of the
2019 class of the Virginia Golf Hall of
Fame, inducted this past May.
Back to the beach
The VSGA Women’s Amateur is re-
turning to Virginia Beach for the first
time since 2008, when Lauren Doughtie
defeated Kristen Simpson 5 and 3 in
the championship match at Bayville
Country Club.
Medalist and champ?
Last year, Greenlief became the first
stroke-play qualifying medalist to win
the title since Amanda Steinhagen in
2010.
» 2018 champion: Lauren Greenlief (International CC)
» How she won: Unchallenged until the semifinals, Greenlief survived two tight
matches to claim her second straight title.
» Final match: Greenlief def. Amanda Hollandsworth (Great Oaks CC) 2 and 1.

Not only will there be a new champion crowned at Princess Anne,
but the 16-player match-play field will have a decidedly different
look. Only five of the players who made it to match play last year at
Farmington CC are back: Kendall Turner, Rory Weinfurther, Jayde
Dudley, Diana Domenech, and Sidney Walker.
Weinfurther is the only semifinalist from last year in the field. Lau-
ren Greenlief and Lyndsey Hunnell are not competing, and Aman-
da Hollandsworth turned professional after her final season at Vir-
ginia Tech.
Becca DiNunzio will head to Virginia Tech later this summer, and
she’s heading to Princess Anne with plenty of momentum. The Nor-
folk teenager participated in Monday qualifying for the LPGA’s Pure
Silk Classic, finished second at the VSGA Women’s Stroke Play
Championship and just missed out on qualifying for the U.S. Wom-
en’s Amateur.
Danielle Suh, who has committed to play college golf at High Point
University, is an alternate for the U.S. Women’s Amateur. She fin-
ished in fifth place at the VSGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship
and was part of the runner-up side at the VSGA Women’s Four-Ball
Championship.
Old Dominion women’s golf coach Mallory Hetzel is in the field. Het-
zel’s Monarchs hosted a 12-team invitational at Princess Anne last
October and finished third.
Two-time VSGA Junior Girls’ champion Victoria Tip-Aucha returns to
the Women’s Amateur after not participating last year. Tip-Aucha
was a semifinalist in 2016 at James River Country Club.
Jillian Drinkard is coming off a strong freshman season at Method-
ist University, where she was named Women’s Golf Coaches Associ-
ation’s Division III national freshman of the year.
