Communications Versatility

The 3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56K LANModem is a true business-class solution,enabling any individual or company tosupport a wide range of communica-tions requirements. Even without accessto ISDN or DSL, the same advantages ofshared multi-user high-speed communi-cations are apparent, while maintainingthe familiarity and convenience ofmodem-based operations.

Simultaneous Dial-Out/Dial-In

In this application, internal users candial out through one internal modemto connect to the Internet, while anexternal teleworker dials in over thesecond internal modem to accessresources on the corporate server.

Dial-Out/Two Different Locations

In this application, one internaluser can dial out through one of theinternal modems to the Internet,while a second internal user dialsout to another network, e.g., a supplier’s extranet.

Dial-Out/Two-Channel Multilink

In this application, one internal usercan dial out to upload a graphics-intensive file; the 3Com OfficeConnectDual 56K LAN Modem senses the largefile transfer and automatically acti-vates the second internal modem tobring up a second line using MultilinkPPP. The large file transmission is ableto use the combined bandwidth ofboth lines and transmit at near-ISDNspeeds. When the file transfer is com-plete, the 3Com OfficeConnect Dual56K LAN Modem senses the drop-offin activity and disconnects the secondline to free up the WAN connection forother users.

Secure

As a business-class communicationssolution, the 3Com OfficeConnectDual 56K LAN Modem has a full com-plement of security features to ensureprotection from unauthorized exter-nal access.

Security features include: IETF PAP,CHAP, and MS-CHAP Secures the net-work with name and passwordauthentication.

Password Protection

Restricts access to the 3ComOfficeConnect Dual 56K LAN Modemconfiguration screens.

IntelligentNAT

Enables all of the users connected tothe 3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56K LANModem to share a single ISP accountand phone line while hiding the IPaddresses of computers attached to themodem from the public Internet.

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)Pass-Through

Enables offices or users to communi-cate over secure Virtual PrivateNetworks (VPNs), saving money overcostly dedicated private line WANs.

Virtual Communications Port

The 3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56K LANModem incorporates a “virtualcommunications port” that enables themodem to work with other services—such as America Online—that don’tsupport a PPP connection. The virtualcom port makes the transmission appearto come from a RS-232 communicationsport, such as an external modem.

This feature also makes it possible for the3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56K LANModem to accept and receive faxes. Ifone of the internal modems is available,faxes can be sent through the virtualcom port. Alternatively, faxes can besent using one of the pass-through voiceports.

E-Z LAN Utility

Upon start-up, the E-Z LAN Utilitylooks at the computer and correctlyconfigures the necessary devices tosupport Internet access automatically.

ISP Wizard

The ISP Wizard eliminates thecomplexity associated with setting upan ISP connection, allowing Internetaccess as quickly as possible.Alternatively, bypass this quick setupoption and do a complete customizedconfiguration, which includes theability to enable such features as PPPdata compression, Intelligent NAT,Multilink PPP, etc. Customized con-figurations can be set up duringinitial configuration or whenever youwant to activate more sophisticatedcapabilities on your 3ComOfficeConnect Dual 56K LAN Modem.

Desktop Manager

The Desktop Manager utility enablesusers to work directly from theTool Tray menu bar to do things likecheck the status of calls, initiate andterminate calls.

Embedded Domain Name System(DNS) Server

Allows network devices to beaddressed by user-friendly namesrather than numeric IP addresses.

Embedded Dynamic Host ConfigurationProtocol (DHCP) Server

Supplies network addresses to computersautomatically, simplifying configurationand management of the network.

Instant LAN

The 3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56KLAN Modem not only enables multi-ple users to share access to WANresources, it provides an instant LAN.By adding 3Com print servers and faxservers to the LAN, users can alsoshare local resources.

V.90 Advantages

The 3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56K LANModem utilizes 3Com’s market-leadingV.90 technology for the fastest possibleconnections over ordinary analog phonelines. The modem can achieve thesehigh-speed analog connections with anyISP that supports the V.90 standard orthe pre-standard x2 protocol created byUS Robotics. The LAN Modem willautomatically “downshift” to slowermodem standards such as V.34 (33.6 Kbps) if the ISP has not upgradedto 56 Kbps technology.

Because the 3Com OfficeConnect 56KLAN Modem incorporates a networkrouter, each connected computer canreach Ethernet transmission speeds of 10 Mbps, eliminating the computerCOM port’s 115 Kbps bottleneck. Thatalso means that the modem’s Internettransmission speeds are up to two timesfaster than those of standard analogmodems.

The 3Com OfficeConnect 56K LANModem supports standards-based datacompression—the IETF CompressionControl Protocol with LZS technologyfrom hi/fn, Inc. It allows actual through-put from the LAN to the 56K connectionto reach speeds greater than 150 Kbps.This increased throughput meansdecreased usage fees and waiting timefor every user on the LAN.
