“Horsham groups such as the Hor-sham Twinning Association play a vital part in the social life of our town" said Cllr. Brian O'Connell, Chairman of Horsham District Council. He was addressing the AGM of the HTA in a packed Park Barn last Friday in his role as the association’s President.
"Our society depends on the ac-tivities of voluntary clubs, organi-sations and institutions” he con-tinued, “We are all conscious of the debt we owe to the many who give up their time and energy to work for others. Twinning is one of those and it has an impressive impact ".
Cllr. O'Connell mentioned in par-ticular the Schools' Language Com-petition, an annual event where the Twinning Association invites the schools of Horsham to participate in producing videos and essays in French and German. Spanish has been added recently, and there is keen competition for what is seen as practical and relevant use of lan-guage skills.
The Chairman of the Asso-ciation, Oliver Farley added "For twenty-fi ve successful years we have promoted social, scholarly and sporting connections with our twin towns in St.-Maixent-l’Ecole (France) and Lage (Germany). Vis-its continue between our towns and many friendships have developed over the years, indeed two visits are pending right now. Sporting ex-changes involve the rugby and ten-nis clubs and the up-coming visits engage the choirs of both hosts and guests. We are keenly aware too of the challenges facing young peo-ple today and hope we can nudge them a little in the right direction through language skills and under-
President O'Connell stresses importance of twinning
standing of other countries”.As in every group, fi nance, or the
lack of it, plays a big role. This is the case even more so in 2015 with the HTA expecting two visits in close succession from France and Germa-ny. Understandably Treasurer Den-nis Saunders was highly delighted when Cllr. O'Connell promised a donation out of his Chairman's Budget to ease the continuing fi -
nancial burden a little.Cllr. O’Connell posed with the
lucky winners of the raffl e for a photo shoot, where the fi rst prize was a £100 dining voucher and after a fi ne spread of mainly Continen-tal food with a glass or two of good wine, Frank Pattison, a retired Ger-man teacher from Christ’s Hospital gave a half-hour talk entitled ‘The Cross and the Crown’.
It was widely agreed that it was a ‘brilliant and entertaining evening and a winning format for a success-ful AGM’.
The Horsham Twinning Associa-tion is open to all. If you are inter-ested in the HTA’s activities, or of becoming a member, email the social secretary Janet Saunders at [email protected].

The Storrington Village Day com-mittee has been successfully run-ning the popular Village Day event for many years, giving local organi-sations, youth groups, charities and businesses the opportunity to per-form, demonstrate and publicise themselves to the local community.
The organisers of the event take no profit and over the years have made substantial funding contributions to many local youth organisations.
Planning had already started on this year’s event when arrangements that the Parish Council had made for a commercial Storrington Summer Festival event were announced. The Village Day Committee recognised that running two events similar in nature and within one month of each other would be impractical.
Village Day Chairman Norman Boyland said: “We greatly regret any disappointment to the Storrington population and the people who have supported us for many years over the cancellation of this year’s Village Day.
“I hope that local organisations that we have been able to support in recent years continue to receive es-sential funding from the profits of this new venture.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the Parish Council and other partners in
developing Village events that ben-efit the community.”

The Girls and Kissingate brewery victorious at Equinox Festival
Another hugely enjoyable Equinox Spring Beer and Cider festival took place at the Drill Hall in Horsham over the last weekend of March, organised by the North Sussex branch of CAMRA - the Campaign
for Real Ale.One of the features this year were
two special beers, brewed by the branch with considerable help from two of the branch brewers. The boys and King Beer brewed a chilli,
chocolate porter, while the girls and Kissingate went for a golden hoppy ale.
The vote was close, with more good comments than bad for both beers, but the girls not only beat the
boys, but also walked away with the award for Light Beer of the festival, with Jarrow Red Ellen and Haywards Heath’s Top Notch Flare Path a close joint second.
Lots of great feedback was provide
throughout the day, with particular praise for the range of dark beers. To the gentleman who said he could not make a vote for light beer of the festival, as he never ventured away from the dark bar, everyone at the Equinox Spring Beer and Cider fes-tival would like to salute you!
Completing the double, the clear winner of Dark Beer of the Festival was Kissingate Undertakers Var-nish, a 7% Trappist style ruby ale from the brewer based in Lower Beeding.
The cider of the festival, which sold out well before any of the oth-ers, was Wobblegate Pink from Bol-ney. Indeed, the Saturday evening headline music act was distraught to find that it had sold out while she was performing, but still came back on Sunday to enjoy the other ciders and the Sunday music.
Donations , tokens and unwanted glasses also managed to raise just over £350 for St. Catherine’s Hos-pice.
The festival organisers would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers and musicians, and particularly to Gareth Jones of Beer Essentials for his invaluable sup-port with ticket, to Rob at the Drill Hall for his help over the weekend, to the teams at King Beer and Kiss-ingate for the special beers, and to Sam at the Malt Shovel for ticket sales.
If anyone has any comments, or wants to get involved in CAMRA in North Sussex or future festivals, please contact the organisers on [email protected]
With Easter at the end of March next year, the provisional date for 3rd Spring Equinox festival is the first weekend of March 2016.

Steyning Grammar School has received national recognition for the exceptional attainment of its students in the 2014 GCSE exami-nations.
SSAT, the Schools, Students and Teachers Network, recently under-took its annual in-depth analysis of offi cial Department for Education data on all state-funded schools in England and identifi ed Steyning Grammar School’s success.
The school has qualifi ed for an SSAT Educational Outcomes Award
by being in the top 20% of non-se-lective schools nationally for high average grades achieved by stu-dents.
Nick Wergan, Headteacher said: “We are delighted to receive this recognition for our student out-comes - and thank our students, staff , and parents and carers for the hard work, support and com-mitment needed to achieve these results. We are a highly aspira-tional school, determined to un-lock the full potential in each of our
students, and nationally successful outcomes are one of the measures of this success; I am equally proud of the way our students achieve, their commitment to our ethos, and the dynamism and energy of students and staff alike. This award is a signifi cant milestone on our 'journey to excellence'.
The school has been invited to receive their award at a regional celebration ceremony hosted by SSAT at Holland Park School in London on 12 May.
Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT said: “Steyning Grammar School should be congratulated for their exceptional achievement. They have proved themselves to be leading the fi eld in improving GCSE outcomes for their students. There is so much good practice that this school could share, and I hope they will join us at the celebration evening for the chance to network and share strategies with award-winning schools.
“These results are testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and lead-ership team at Steyning Gram-mar School, and show what can be achieved when skilled teachers have high expectations and ambi-tion for every young person. I am proud that this school is a member of the SSAT network.”

The nine and ten-year-olds of Castlewood Primary School near Horsham recently spent a day fo-cused on life in George III’s navy, learning about Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar.
The trip took place thanks to a visit by a historian and an ‘ac-tive approaches’ specialist teach-er sponsored by the 1805 Club - a charity dedicated to promoting understanding of Georgian naval history and the achievements of one of Britain’s greatest war-time heroes.
“It was an exceptionally full day,” said ‘Wooden World’ work-shop leader Jerome Monahan. “There was something for every-one, with opportunities to sing a shanty; perform ship-board duties and attempt to persuade a press gang to be lenient – with varying success. Along the way we referred to art, satiric cartoons, music and film sequences to aid the explora-tion, and we even fought the bat-tle of Trafalgar on plastic chairs so that the children could grasp what made Nelson’s tactics on October 21, 1805 so unconventional and decisive.”
“Nelson was a great lover of Shakespeare,” added Monahan, “and so this provided the perfect excuse to include some activi-ties using powerful speeches and scenes from plays as diverse as The Tempest and Richard III. It was fantastic to see how some of the images and language from these activities then percolated into the children’s own writing at other points in the day.”
“Most of the class had visited HMS Victory and it was impres-sive how the experience informed their understanding and insights,” said Castlewood Year 5 teacher Christopher Noble. “One activity involved examining the famous painting depicting ‘The Death Of Nelson’ for historical accuracy, and it took the class no time at all to point out how the artist Arthur Devis had manipulated the space; raising the roof of the Orlop Deck to enable a more heroic arrange-ment of people around the dying Admiral. I was proud of them! I also learnt a lot and not only about Nelson since many of the active approaches are entirely transfer-able to other topics. I’ll certainly be including some of them in my own teaching.”
Naval historian Peter Warwick,
who spent the day dressed as a Georgian able seaman, was equal-ly impressed. “It was great to see in their feedback how much they had enjoyed the detailed histori-cal content and clearly wanted to know more about the period, Nel-son’s life and his death. There is nothing quite like handling a bit of grapeshot or weighing a musket ball of the period in your hand to grasp, literally, some of the hor-rors of war at sea in that period.”
In their evaluations written at the end of the day most of the children judged the experience ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’. ““It was the best ever workshop,” said one boy and ten-year-old Priya said: “I enjoyed everything about this wonderful experience”. This was music to the ears of the 1805 organisers of the Wooden World workshops, still being trialled ahead of a national programme in primary and secondary schools. “This is the first time Jerome and I have received a ‘Brilliant plus’ grading and the whole day was hugely encouraging – underlining the impact that ‘active approach-es’ blending, drama, literature, history and film can have on young imaginations. The day just shot by!
High on the list of most enjoy-able activities were learning the duties of a gun-crew, the discus-sions of life aboard ship includ-ing a sure-fire way of encouraging maggots to evacuate a barrel of biscuits, and attempting to per-suade a press gang to leave one alone, despite their need to make up numbers in the navy at a time of war. “The children came up with some great excuses both ingenious and straight-forward including the lack of a leg or arm,” said Peter Warwick. “I was not sure how se-riously to take one boy’s threat of tickling the press gang until they let him go – but if he wasn’t jok-ing, then he would certainly have been in for a shock if grabbed for service in Nelson’s navy.”
“It was a tremendous day,” add-ed Castlewood head teacher Julia Slocombe. “It included a strong mix of different approaches and lots of stimulus and also time for children to consider the experi-ences and translate them into their own creative work. It is great that they were so enthusiastic and made the most of this opportu-nity.”

Celebrating the Circle of Life in Horsham
On Monday, 23rd March 2015, at the Palace in Chichester, the Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner, Bish-op of Chichester, launched a new book celebrating the wonders of creation that lie in the very heart of communities in East and West Sussex.
Some were surprised to discover that these havens lie in churchyards right across Sussex, many of which have existed for over a thousand years, so they harbour a wonderful selection of species that flourish in them. ‘The Nature of God’s Acre’, written by The Reverend Dr Mark Betson, Rural Officer of the Chich-ester Diocese and wildlife expert
Miles King, explores how parishes value nature in their churchyards and how the presence of wildlife affects the spirituality of these an-cient, hallowed places.
One hundred and seventy-five people from twenty-six commu-nities contributed to the book and there are sections on every Sussex parish which took part, including some magical personal accounts of parishioner’s experiences of the nature of their church-yards and of the spiritual importance to them personally. e.g. “On those sunny days I sit for a while on the step by the vestry door and listen to the birds, feeling the sun on my
Bishop launches a new book on the ‘gems’ of the county of West Sussex
face. I cannot be unhappy in such a glorious location, a tranquil place for quiet reflection.” Parishoner St John’s, Coolhurst.
Miles King said: “I have always believed that nature plays a central role in people’s spiritual lives and what we have discovered in putting together this book, is testament to that belief.”
The Reverend Dr Mark Betson added: “Ancient Churchyards lie at the heart of many communities and they are unique places where people and nature can thrive together.”
Bishop Martin concluded with a very apt quote for us all, in the run up to Easter: “The Churchyards of Sussex are places where we invest some of our most precious posses-sions. They also offer to nature an environment in which its flourish-ing can remind us of the Christian conviction that the resurrection points to the recovery of Eden and paradise, even now in this life. So step into another world. Learn, in God’s acre, to rest in peace and rise in glory…”
Copies of ‘The Nature of God’s Acre’ priced £5 are available from the Cloisters Shop, Chichester Ca-thedral, Books Alive, Hove (www.booksalive.co.uk), the Natural His-tory Book Store www.nhbs.com/ and other retail outlets shortly.

Farlington school springs into musical action
So much music… and so few words with which to do the evening jus-tice. Farlington’s ‘Spring Concert’ was a dynamic, varied and skilful display of musical talent.
The girls, supported by the music staff led by Jane Thomas, pulled out all the stops to make the evening a truly special event as the audi-ence was treated to a bountiful pro-gramme with many highlights.
From Vivaldi to Scott Joplin, from Irving Berlin to Taylor Swift, by
way of The Kooks and Karl Jenkins, such dazzling variety clearly illu-minated the vitality and vibrancy of the music that Farlington pro-duces. With orchestras, choirs, jazz and rock bands, together with en-sembles of fl utes, strings, ukuleles, guitars, saxophones and recorders, there was something for every-body; and the girls performed with great skill, dedication and creativity throughout. A wonderfully melodi-ous and memorable evening.
In a day full of new and exciting activities, pupils and teachers at Forest School experienced many rich and enjoyable learning activ-ities during their Challenge Day of the current school year.
Trips were arranged to visit the Natural History Museum in London and an art exhibition in Chichester and workshops helping the boys understand important issues such as testicular cancer and teenage pregnancy and workshops learning to play steel drums were also held.
One of the many highlights of the day was the creation of a large kinetic sculpture by 100 year 8 pu-pils alongside ten members of staff and a visiting artist from Same Sky, one of the secondary school’s reg-ular supporters.
There are 5 challenge days spread out across each year with the fi fth being sports their sports day, which is set to be held in July. The regular timetable is suspended to allow day-long workshops or multiple sessions across all year groups, with some activities taking place off site.

A team from Christ’s Hospital has won top prize at the country’s larg-est school-level Model United Na-tions conference. A group of five students from the School beat 128 other teams to secure first place at the end of the three-day competi-tion, which was attended by 700 students from across the world.
Another CH team was declared runner up. A total of twelve differ-ent trophies were presented to stu-dents from Christ’s Hospital during the conference’s closing ceremony.
Forty-seven schools from three different continents attended the event, which simulated the diplo-matic debate of the United Nations. Students from Christ’s Hospital represented the views of the United States of America, Canada and Swe-den in committees including the United Nations Security Council and
General Assembly.The students successfully secured
backing for a number of resolutions offering solutions to pressing global problems. These included propos-als for achieving universal primary education, addressing the Ebola epi-demic, protecting biodiversity and ensuring freedom of expression in the news media.
Ten students from Christ’s Hospi-tal were considered the best in their committees, securing Distinguished Delegate Awards. Individual prizes were won by CH students Angel Droth Vicens, Dani Heath, Edmond King, Mololuwa Olanrewaju, Grace Owen Ellis Clark, Isobel Thomas Horton, Tia Troth, Onyinye Udok-poro and Isobel Walker.
Dr Alistair Goddard, who coaches the School’s Model United Nations team, commented: “I am always
hugely impressed by the passion with which Christ’s Hospital stu-dents support their ideas about solving the world’s problems. They have real interest in international politics, human rights and develop-ment. In some cases, the students were able to draw on their personal experiences of migration, social ex-clusion and life in developing coun-tries in their speeches.”
“This was an astonishing result for the team. We were competing against the best schools in the coun-try and from across the world. It was a huge shock to return to CH with such a haul of trophies”, he added.

Saturday, February 28 saw the third ‘Ostara Ball’ held at South Lodge Hotel to raise funds for local char-ity Age UK Horsham District and to welcome the beginning of Spring. This year the Ball Committee raised in excess of £5000 to help fund vi-tal charitable services that help thousands of people in later life every year across Horsham District.
The evening was supported by many local companies including Arun Office, London and Quadrant, Cordek, Dairy Crest, Harwoods and Biffa with many more local busi-nesses and restaurants donating raffle prizes -all helping to make the evening a wonderful success.
Staff from Barclay’s Bank in Hor-sham again kindly volunteered their time to help with the night’s games and activities. Barclays matched the money their staff helped raise up to the sum of £1000, further helping the charity continue their invaluable work in the district
With music from local violinist Andrew Bernardi during the cham-pagne reception, Celebrity Speaker comedian Roy Hudd and live music from ‘Sound investment’ after din-ner, guests were treated to a night of fantastic food, fun and entertain-ment and generously supported the raffle and auction hosted by Rupert Toovey.
Deborah Johnston, Ball organiser said: “A big thank you to those who continue to support the Ostara Ball and Age UK Horsham District. It's a perfect combination: having a fabu-lous evening at South Lodge AND helping such a wonderful charity.”
The Ostara Ball is the flagship fundraising event for Age UK Hor-sham District.
Phillip Lansberry, Trustee at the Charity and MC on the night, high-lighted in his speech that in the past year the charity had unlocked £1mil-lion in benefits for those in later life in Horsham District, through its In-
formation and Advice Service which is offered free of charge. There are now approximately 26,000 residents aged over 65 throughout the Hor-sham district and the money raised from this event will enable the char-ity to continue to provide vital sup-port to local older people.
Due to the success of this year’s event, plans are already in place for next year’s Ostara Ball which will be taking place, once again, at South Lodge on Saturday 5th March. If you are interested in attending and would like to reserve places or learn more about the event, email Debo-rah Johnston: [email protected]
The website www.ageukhorsham-district.org.uk gives full information on the aims, services and work of the charity or see details about their events on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/AgeUKHorshamDis-trict or follow them on twitter @AgeUKHorshamD.

West Sussex County Council’s Leader Louise Goldsmith has to-day announced changes to her Cabinet.
Councillor John O’Brien, who represents East Grinstead South and Ashurst Wood, takes over the portfolio of Highways and Trans-port today (March 26).
John O’Brien was elected to WSCC in a by-election in May 2010. He has been deputy to the current Cabinet Member for Highways and Trans-port, Pieter Montyn, since July 2011.
During this time he has been involved in major highways pro-jects including chairing the Better Roads Task and Finish Group that reviewed on the condition of the county council’s roads and resulted in a £35million investment in the very successful West Sussex Better Roads Programme which is now en-tering its second year. He has been Chairman of the Corporate Parent-ing Panel since May 2013.
Louise thanked Pieter for all he had achieved during his time as Cabinet Member, saying: “My sin-cere thanks go to Pieter for his ex-ceptional service as a member of the Cabinet. I am delighted that Pieter has agreed to become my Special Adviser focusing on the A27 Campaign and improvements - a matter very important to the Coun-cil. I know he will continue to serve superbly as a constituency council-lor.
“I am delighted that John will be joining the Cabinet. He has already demonstrated great aptitude and dedication in a broad range of ar-eas within the Council, especially during his term as deputy cabinet member for highways and trans-port, and I know he will bring those skills to bear in his new role.”
John said: “I am looking forward to challenges that this new role will bring and to working closely with Members, officers and partners to get the best for our communities in West Sussex. I want to thank Pieter for all his help, support and guid-ance and wish him all the very best in his new role."

Collyer’s students have enjoyed an outstanding showing at the UK Maths Challenge, a competition aimed at 16-19 year olds studying Mathematics at AS and A Level.
The national competition tests the country’s brightest young mathematicians. This week stu-dents were awarded with certifi -cates during a presentation cere-mony hosted by Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley.
Maths teacher Nick Robins, who co-ordinated the Collyer’s en-try, was delighted: “The challenge
is highly competitive and pres-tigious, but it is also a fun way of giving some extra challenge for students and can also lead on to greater things! Well done to all of our students who received certifi -cates today!”
The event also celebrated a num-ber of mathematical achievements over recent weeks, in addition to the gold, silver and bronze awards at the UK Maths Challenge. The presentation of certifi cates took place in the Quad outside Collyer’s impressive Duckering Hall, where
students proudly collected their certifi cates, refl ected upon their achievements and even enjoyed some celebratory cakes!
Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley was extremely proud to present the certifi cates: “We have an excel-lent mathematics department and these talented students and their teachers have worked really hard to be successful in the UK Maths Challenge. Congratulations to eve-ryone involved and thank-you to Nick Robins for his hard work in organising everything!”

Pupils at Heron Way School have been taking part in the BIg Pedal, a nationwide challenge organised by the charity Sustrans to see which schools can have the most pupils journeys by bike and scooter over three weeks.
Heron Way managed to get over 45% of pupils cycling and scooting – amaz-ing when you consider just 2% of pu-pils use cycling in the UK as their usual way to get to school. The school came 14th out of 106 Primary schools in the South East of England, and 143rd out of the 1,044 Primary Schools taking part in the challenge throughout the whole of the United Kingdom. Overall, there were 1,729 schools taking part in the Big Pedal, racking up a grand total of 1,414,952 journeys into school during those three weeks (not counting the journey’s home again)!
To celebrate the end of the event Heron Way organised a bike it break-fast. With almost 200 pupils arriv-ing at school for a healthy breakfast of fruit and a pastry which were very kindly donated by Waitrose Horsh-am. To fi nish off the breakfast there were fruit smoothies produced by pedal power. During the breakfast, year 4 teacher Alan Light took on a relay team of year 6 pupils at an exer-cise bike challenge and just managed a narrow victory.

Successful businesses start here!Business Expert and Author Janette Whitney talks about setting up your own business
Spring is in the air and many bud-ding entrepreneurs have a spring in their step too, eager to em-bark on an exciting new venture. Armed with redundancy cheques April start-ups are all the rage, but thinking through your options carefully is vitally important.
So where do you start? One option is to fulfi l that dream
and start the business you have al-ways wanted. But of course making it in business isn’t down to chance; Mega-tycoons don’t get incredibly wealthy by luck. They have what it takes to succeed in business. So when the urge to become your own boss hits you, ask yourself one sim-ple question: ‘Do I have the right qualities to succeed in business?’
Certainly people think that they do, but the truth is that businesses are only as good as the people who run them. Some people will prosper by adopting the right habits, and others will fall by the wayside.
Starting up your own business is one of the biggest challenges you’ll ever face and you’ll need to get a fi rm
grip on it from the very beginning. So have you got what it takes?Firstly, you have to ask yourself
why you’re going into business. Is it to make money? Or is it because it really interests you? For the inde-pendence? Or is it a combination of these?
Whatever the reason you must be clear about your personal aims and set yourself business goals.
Do you have the drive, training and skills to make a success of it? Have you thought what it will mean for your family or partner, especially when working hours could be very long?
If you’ve never had much of a head for money, or if you fi nd deadlines a bore, or if talking to people is not really your forte, then you need to think again whether you want to be in business. Other things to con-sider, which are less obvious: - How good are you with paperwork? Can you think ahead? Can you cope with pressure? How good are you at letting go and trusting others to get on with the job?
Because, in the fi erce heat of run-ning a business, it is these kinds of personal strengths that can make the diff erence between surviving and drying up before you reach the fi rst waterhole.
Key factors which will give you a
greater chance of success are:1) The age of the owner (the over
50’s have double the survival rate of those in their 20’s)
2) The number of owners (greater number, greater prospect of sur-vival).
3) A specifi c vocational qualifi ca-tion.
4) Previous work experience in the same sector you’re starting up in.
Gender doesn’t matter at all – male and female entrepreneurs have just as much chance of being successful.
There are certainly practical ways in which you can help your chance of success. Planning is key – a busi-ness plan is the fi rst step, off ering a ‘dry run’ to see how viable your idea really is and providing you with the opportunity to sort out any problems before they happen.
Small businesses that succeed have all given careful thought, plan-ning and sought guidance from ex-ternal sources. General advice can be free, but specifi c advice for your business will cost you, although it will not be as costly as learning the hard way!
If you’d like help and advice with your business idea, contact me at Janette Whitney & Associates on 01403 733671 or visit www.whit-neyassocs.co.uk for more informa-tion.

New mums are being invited to at-tend an all new fi tness session at Pavilions In The Park, Horsham.
Babies ‘n’ Bikes is an indoor cy-cling session with a twist, you can bring your baby along too.
The session is specifi cally for new mums returning to exercise after having a baby and allows you to bring your baby along to the class with you. Babies ‘n’ Bikes Instructor Helen said: “Indoor cycling is a great form of exercise, it burns loads of calories, is low impact and off ers participants the chance to take things at their own pace, ideal for those new or returning to exercise after a break. The session is designed to be relaxed and infor-mal, also off ering mums the chance to meet others.”

When Horsham resident Meg Thompson fi rst set off travelling the world three years ago, little did she know she would return to the UK to set up her own wellbe-ing business: YogaWithMeg.
Meg’s passion was inspired by the benefi ts she discovered for herself when working at a fast paced, stressful job in events management while in Sydney. She says, “I started attending a yoga class during my lunch breaks and was amazed at the benefi ts I felt – surprisingly not just the physical ones.”
She discovered reduced stress levels, a calmer mind, fewer ten-sion headaches and increased general happiness. She decided to break her journey on her way home by completing a comprehensive yoga teaching course in Bali - and immediately started sharing the benefi ts with anyone who was willing to give it a go!
Yoga is no longer seen as “al-ternative” and is now enjoyed by a huge spectrum of people, including athletes of all ages as a supple-ment to their regular training, by management and business people to focus their thoughts, by mums to gain some healthy and socia-ble “me time”, and increasingly by the elderly who want to stay fi t and fl exible for as long as possi-ble. By practising a variety of yoga positions, meditation and breath-ing exercises they are all reaping the benefi ts. “It’s really fantastic when total beginners come along to my classes and very soon feel the benefi t their everyday lives”, she enthuses.
Although it is one of the world’s oldest forms of exercise, dating back over 5,000 years, there is currently a huge surge in inter-est in yoga and also in mindful-ness as a way for busy western-ers to counteract the stress of our modern lives. Meg began teach-ing beginners’ courses as soon as she returned to Horsham and was amazed at their immediate popu-larity. John, aged 60, said, “I’ve never tried anything like this be-fore, and have been really sur-prised at how much I’ve learned and how much more fl exible I’ve become after just a few sessions.” As well as the beginners’ courses, Meg has now introduced Power Flow classes for those who want a little more of a challenge, and for those who are looking for mental rather than physical relaxation she is also teaching meditation.
If you would like to receive your FREE at home evening wind down yoga sheet then simply pop Meg an e-mail. You can also fi nd the timetable and request a newsletter at: [email protected]
Q and AAm I too old for yoga?Defi nitely not. People often
start yoga in their 70s and many wish they had started sooner. Yoga is a form of exercise that can be enjoyed from childhood to your advanced years. I have people in my classes from teenagers to pen-sioners.
Do I have to be fi t to do yoga? No, you work with your own cur-
rent fi tness level and within your own capabilities. Yoga is not about comparing yourself to others, but
it is about exploring and doing what feels right for your own body.
But what if I’m not fl exible enough to do yoga?
Saying you are not fl exible enough for yoga is like saying you are too dirty to take a bath- you need it the most! Yoga will im-prove your fl exibility and help you go beyond your current range of movement so that you’ll feel more comfortable during normal daily activity. It’s not about get-ting your leg behind your head, but more about moving and expanding your own body’s limits.
What proof is there that yoga works?
Yoga is now recommended by the NHS as there are hundreds of scientifi c studies exploring the benefi ts of yoga and meditation. Results published include stud-ies showing that yoga can reduce pain and infl ammation, increase recovery time after operations, as well as decreasing insomnia, high blood pressure and depression.
Isn’t yoga just for women? Yoga was started by men and
practiced exclusively by men thou-sands of years ago and the popu-larity of yoga among men is grow-ing today. It’s practiced by rugby players and is also very compat-ible with those who practice mar-tial arts such as aikido. The ratio of men to women in my classes is about 2:5.
Is Yoga is a religion? No. Yoga is built on spirituality
and the promotion of being kind and compassionate towards your-self and others. It is accepting of all religions.

Local singers to take the stage with Olivier Award-winning company in opera classic
Fourteen young people from Sway Perform theatre group join English Touring Opera on stage this May when the Olivier Award-winning opera company brings a season of Italian opera to The Hawth, Craw-ley.
The children, aged between 6 and 11, have been recruited especially for ETO’s tour to sing as a children’s chorus of street urchins in a new staging of Puccini’s classic opera La bohème, which is performed at The Hawth on Wednesday 6 May.
The children perform in Act 2 of the opera, in a Parisian street scene set outdoors on a cold winter’s night near Christmas. In the scene they watch a Punch and Judy show be-ing performed on stage, sing a song about ‘Pa’Guignol’, the name of the puppet, and are given presents by the puppeteer, who is trying to trick their mothers into buying them for their children.
This is the first time that Sway Perform have worked with ETO to provide young performers for the company’s shows on stage.
Liam Howlett who leads the Sway Perform class at The Hawth on Tuesdays from 4.30pm-6.30pm said "This is a hugely exciting op-portunity for the class. Being able to perform, even to just family, is so important for growth and en-joyment, but performing on a large
stage with a professional company is an incredible experience that you'd struggle to find elsewhere."
Tim Yealland, ETO Head of Edu-cation, said: ‘It is fantastic for us to have these talented children from Sway Perform on stage with us in La bohème. Their energy and enthusi-asm will perfectly complement the story of Parisian street life in the nineteenth century, and it is partic-ularly good to be working with this wonderful group for the first time.’
Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest and most moving ope-ras of all time, La bohème is a story of young love set in Paris in the 19th century. A poet, Rodolfo, meets the seamstress Mimì and they fall in love, but poverty and ill-health force them apart. ETO’s production is sung in Italian with English sur-titles, in full costume, accompanied by the company’s orchestra and chorus.
ETO’s visit also sees a perfor-mance of Donizetti’s rare opera The Siege of Calais at The Hawth on Thursday 7 May, which tells the sto-ry of the citizens of Calais who offer up their lives to save their city from the besieging English army.
The company also performs Wax-wings, a new opera specifically for young people with special educa-tional needs, at Crawley’s Manor Green Primary School.

Twister warning as HAODS brings ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to Horsham
Batten down the hatches- there’s a twister on the way and it’s going to be a big one! Early signs sug-gest ‘Wicked Witch’ activity in the area, with sightings of ‘lions and tigers and bears’, as HAODS (Hor-sham Amateur Operatic & Dramat-ic Society) bring ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to the Capitol this April.
The musical, based on the classic 1939 family fi lm starring Judy Gar-land, tells the story of Dorothy and her dog Toto, as they are whisked away from their home in Kansas, over the rainbow, to Munchkinland. They journey to the Emerald City to seek the Wizard, meeting colour-ful characters (Scarecrow, Tinman & Lion) on their travels, but the Wicked Witch of the West stands in their way. Luckily Glinda the good witch is usually close by to help.
This much loved musical features well known songs including ‘Over the Rainbow’, ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard’, ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ and many, many more.
Leading the cast is Adrienne Cox as Dorothy with Becca Attfi eld un-der-studying and playing the role in the Saturday matinee. Joining Doro-thy on her adventure is Chris Dale as Scarecrow, Gus Quintero-Fryatt as Tinman, and Kevin Summers as The Cowardly Lion. Glinda will be played by Nicola Shaw (with Alicia Marson understudying and performing in the matinee), and Andrew Dono-van will portray the Wicked Witch of the West. The society is proud to introduce two talented canine stars: Buster & Mr Dudley, who will play Toto, and a talented chorus of adults and two childrens casts who play
everything from crows, to trees, to the lovable munchkins.
With not long to go until opening night, Director Yvonne Chadwell says, “with 71 children and adults and over 200 costumes, it's all com-ing together…. We have just got to sort out the pyrotechnic eff ects! ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a great
family show and we hope the au-dience will be singing the songs long after they have left the theatre.”
The Wizard of Oz is on at The Cap-itol from Tuesday 14th – Saturday 18th April at 7:30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2:30pm. To get your tick-et for a trip to Oz, call the box offi ce 01403 750 220 or visit www.thecapi-tolhorsham.com (Tickets £15-£17).

Do you have what it takes to win?
After a hugely successful reboot last year, Horsham's long running Bat-tle of the Bands is back for 2015 and is now accepting entries through it's website at www.horshambotb.co.uk
Judged by a panel of industry pro-fessionals, this year's event will take place on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th August in Horsham Park's 'Human Nature Garden', with the fi nal of the covers competition taking place on the Saturday afternoon and the fi nal of the originals competition taking place in the evening.
As a special treat, last year's origi-nals winner Sonic Deluxe will then perform while the judges make their decision.
The 2015 event will come to a close on the Sunday evening with the fi nal of the acoustic competition, this year also taking place in the Human Na-ture Garden due to popular demand.
Prizes to be won include a profes-sional music video and photo-shoot, studio time, an iTunes single release package and much, much more.
Co-organiser and former BotB winner Matt Andrews said: "Chang-ing the venue, format and date of BotB last year was a huge gamble but it certainly paid off . The event was fantastic, all entrants played their socks off and the winners thoroughly deserved their place in Horsham music history. We expect this year's event to be even bigger and better. So
if you're in a band, get your entries in now via the website. And if you love live music, put August 8th & 9th in your diary now!"
This year, for the fi rst time, the Horsham BotB website will also host a People's Choice poll online where fans can get involved and check out the bands that have entered. It will also continue to act as a hub for en-trants to advertise themselves and to receive up to date information about the competition. Closing date for en-tries will be 1st July when heats will be announced.
Visit the site now and get involved: www.horshambotb.co.uk Good luck!

Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday
Ciao amici! Michelangelo here- I am fi nally here in lovely ‘orsham - oh what a beautiful town it is.
The Dons of Piazza Italia have fl own me over be-cause they love my gameshow so much. In Italy it is loved beyond measure. The problem was I knew nothing of Piazza Italia - the mirror charms me so much itsa impossible to focus on much more. But I am a Gameshow Host - nothing can faze me! I have studied and studied and am now the most knowledgeable person on Piazza Italia. Feel free to interrogarmi!!
When does it start you say? Itsa 10am every day! Get here early for the cars and their parades - oh, I cannot wait to see a Ferrari again. I have missed mine so much since I fl ew out; two whole days without the feel of that leather under me, itsa bel-lisimo.
You wanta food? There is so much choice; Italian markets, wine tours, coff ee competitions, pizza ovens and sweets for the children! Oh I am troppo eccitato.
You are not a fan of cars and bikes? Mamma mia! But itsa no problem at all. There is so much at Piazza Italia - it’s a celebration of the fi nest of Italy, there is food, live music and entertainment, not forgetting all of the activities for the bambini! There is so much for them to do on the Forum oh it is pura gioia.
Make sure to come to ‘orsham this Easter Week-end to celebrate Piazza Italia with me, and maybe you can join my gameshow on Good Friday, don’t be scared i miei amici.

You may be a-wondering what a Roman Em-peror is doing in a town like ‘orsham.
Well, apart from stocking up on the latest fashion trends with the lovely ladies at La Vida (and it’s a secret, but I for one will not be miss-ing their speciale fashion show in a-Piries Place on a-Good Friday) I am a-part of an advanced a-party who are a-looking to return ‘orsham to it’s a-former glory as a town of the Roman Empire.
On Easter Monday I am a-looking forward to a-seeing some of my ‘orsham opera favourites – the magnifi cent a-Franz Hepburn and the outrageously talented Oyster Opera. Thank yous for these go to Prezzo restaurants, a-very tasty pizzas and a-pasta.
You all have a-nothing to fear from us on Easter Monday – my cohort will be returning you to the days of togas, Bacchus (hic) and the gentle a-sport of gladiatorial a-combat - it will be a-wonderful fun for everybody, even the bambinos, it is all a-very educational. I will also be a-recruiting for my new ‘orsham Legion and I challenge you, the ‘orsham proletariat, to give witness to my very own ‘I am a-Spartacus chal-lenge’ in a-Carfax. This will be a-just after all of the supercars depart.
As Emperor I must give a-credit to Bluecoat Sports, Mancini Legal and the gallic La Source for swelling my a-coff ers and making my visit to you a-possible… you lucky plebeians.
‘Ere, some fella just asked me about ‘orsham’s Italian Festival, that Piazza Italia fi ng! I said to him “It’s all about the cars, innit” an ‘e said “In-nit ‘bout celebratin’ Italian culture?” Well, what would you say? Of course, I said “Italian culture is cars, you plonker!” …what a numpty!
Any ways, Piazza Italia is all about speed for me. Ferraris, Lambi’s, Ducatis, Minis – you name it, they got it, and this year there’s supercars on all three days! I couldn’t believe my luck when I ‘eard, as it ‘appens, cos I’m in the market for three 10/10 motors for this little job I’m plannin’. (Keep that on the down low though for now – savvy?)
I’m ‘avin’ to get in early this year though, cos they’re starting up early you see. 10am! Gotta be there to check out the Ferrari and Ducati Catwalk – that’s where you can get up close ‘n’ personal like, with all the really choice motors. So, on Good Fri-day, a little sleight of hand, and I might just be the proud new owner of one of them.
On Saturday, apparently their ‘avin’ a load of kids’ stuff down on the Forum, perfect for me to step in whilst they’re distracted and get my ‘ands on one of them Minis. ‘Ang on a mo’, I also hear them Children’s Trust folks are bringing in a load of fast cars too. Nothing like a bit of choice, I al-ways say, eh?
As for Easter Monday, now we’re talkin’ Sonny Jim! The gaff ers in charge are callin’ it Lamborghi-ni Heaven … sweet! Well they got that right! I’ll be there alright at 10 sharpish again, got to make sure I get pole position for that parade!

e Days
This weekend is one of Horsh-am’s biggest and most popular events in the Town Centre, Piazza Italia. Thousands will descend to see the displays of cars and bikes over three days, a stylish fashion show, street entertainment and some delicious Italian food from the visiting market.
ITALIA IN PIAZZA - This popu-lar market will be in the Carfax on Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday. Organiser, Simon Faro, is proud that his market is the real deal, with all foods imported di-rectly from selected Italian farms and producers, all sold to you by real Italians! You’ll fi nd cheese, Italian sausage, olives and delicious torrone - a soft nougat, amongst other amazing produce. They have a huge following in the town and always look forward to their vis-its. However, Horsham’s links with Italy and, more importantly, Ital-ian food, reaches far wider that just once a year.
AUTHENTIC IN HORSHAM - Whilst there has been strong links between our two countries for cen-turies, Italian dishes really started to take a foothold post-war with some of the most enterprising Ital-ian ex-prisoners of war settling in Britain to establish their own res-taurants, pizzerias and gelaterias. Here in Horsham, we all grew up with Piccolo’s in West Street, one of just a few of any type of restau-rant in town before the recent ex-plosion of eateries.
Today, amongst the many chains, there are still two independent and delightfully authentic Italian haunts. Hidden beside Piries Place car park is Fillipo’s that is always worth a visit and Carmela’s run by the Raciti family who have truly made their mark in Horsham with their esteemed restaurant at the end of East Street (Eat Street) and Deli in the Carfax.
SUSSEX PRODUCES ITALIAN - The infl uence Italy has had in our eating habits even extends to what we make and grow on our own turf. Local cheese makers, High Weald Dairy, produce an excellent sheep’s milk Ricotta whilst Booker Harrison have turned their hand
to making a tasty Parmesan style cheese, Twineham Grange.
Even meat doesn’t escape the drive for good Italian food. Beal’s Farm in Sussex specialises in Man-galitza charcuterie. Whilst their hairy pig breed has it’s roots in Hungary and Serbia, the char-cuterie is very latino. They have al-ready scooped a Great Taste award for their coppa, make a splendid salami and milano in addition to pancetta and pastrami. Many of their products are even admired by very foodie Italians.
Perhaps the most audacious of all is Sussex growing one of Italy’s most revered
fruits - the tomato. There are several local tomato growers but perhaps the best known is Nut-bourne Nursery. Not only are their red vine beauties grown insecticide free but they have fl avour that you would normally associate with sun drenched fi elds of rural Italy. You’ll fi nd these and other produce in the markets, farm shops and special-ist local food outlets in and around Horsham.

Feste Italiana in Horsham
Horsham Piazza Italia 9Italian festival begins
Friday 03 April 2015 27
Horsham Piazza Italia 9Italian festival begins
Carmela Italian restaurant sits in the heart of Horsham at the top of Denne Road and this week sees the launch of their new spring menu, just in time for this year's Piazza Italia festival.
It has to be said, Carmela is a fi rm favourite of mine and has never disappointed but, as always, I like to keep them on their toes. So a ran-dom visit to try out their new off er-ings, was on the cards.
Greeted with a smile, my wife and I were shown to our table on the newly refurbished fi rst fl oor of their 16th century building.
The setting is that of an old Eng-lish farm house, with rustic beamed ceilings and exposed timber walls. The faint sound of Italian music in the background, completes the ex-perience.
The new Spring menu is set in 5 parts; Starters, Pasta's, Meats and Fish and Salads (for some reason)
We ordered the Olives and bread to start, along with 2 further dish-es; Wild Boar Carpaccio - thinly sliced wild boar topped with rocket and shaved parmesan, olive oil and lemon and CrostiniAl Pesce - baked rustic bread topped with cod and white fi sh pate, sundried tomato and olive oil. Being greedy, I had a taste of both and surprisingly, the slightly salty wild boar went remarkably well with the smooth creamy fi sh pate. Just saying.
After a few glugs of house red, we moved on to the mains, of which there is plenty to choose. My wife chose the Sciagliatelli Al Ragu'Rustico - Sicilian home made ragu with pork, beef and wild boar cooked in blended Catanian olive oil. I plumbed for the the signature dish, Carmelas ZuppaDi Pesce - Take inward breath... King prawns, tiger prawns, white fi sh bites, calamari, white clams and mus-
sels cooked in a white wine, chilli and tomato stew with garlic rustic bread on the side...and breath. Had I known this would be served in a casserole dish I would have ordered it for the both of us.
The ragu was cooked to perfec-tion, bursting with deep hearty fl avours and didn't skimp on the meat, so much so, my wife couldn't fi nish it. Queue me.
The fi sh stew was cram packed with all the fi sh it promised. The sauce had a hint of heat, but not too much, and the quantity was more than enough for 1. I nearly didn't fi nish it. When I say nearly...
It's no secret that Carmela is the one of the best Italian restaurants in Horsham and that the authentic food matches the authentic expe-rience, but I must congratulate the Raciti family for their consistency in customer service, menu variety and fl avour since their opening in 2010.
Book your table now on 01403 275375.

Cricketfi eld Road, Horsham.Guide Price £625,000
Located in arguably one of the best roads in Horsham and per-fectly situated within just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. This fantastic detached home provides buyers with the opportunity to take in the tennis or cricket, both of which are sit-uated within yards of the front door. The house itself was built in the 1950s and as such, off ers generous accommodation over two fl oors with further potential to extend to either the side, the rear or the left (STPP).
Some particular features of the property include the origi-nal parquet fl ooring which runs through most of the ground fl oor and an attractive open fi replace in the sitting room which is per-fect on those cold winter days. To the front of the property there is a large glazed porch big enough for a small bistro table and chairs and this leads through to a good sized entrance hall with the sitting room immediately to the right. The sitting room is a great size with French doors that lead to the garden and as men-tioned earlier, a gorgeous fea-ture fi replace. Also to the front is a generous dining room and to the rear of the property over-looking the garden is a kitchen/breakfast room complete with walk in larder.
The fi rst fl oor bedrooms are a tremendous size, all of which are comfortable doubles. The master bedroom off ers a bank of fi tted wardrobes and a pleasant front aspect while the second bedroom benefi ts from a dou-ble aspect, making it light and airy. The third bedroom off ers a luxury re-fi tted en-suite shower room. Finally there is a family bathroom that has also been re-fi tted to a high standard.

Devastating last gasp defeat for energetic Horsham
Saturday March 29 - Women’s Conference East - Relegation play-off sHorsham Ladies 1st XI 1 - 2 Bristol Firebrands
Horsham equalised, saved a pen-alty, hit the post and ran and ran but it ended in tears when Bris-tol scored from the last hit of the game to snatch a scarcely deserved win. Both teams had fi nished in the penultimate spot of their leagues, Firebrands having lost six of their last seven games in the West division.
Despite the foul weather a large vociferous President’s Day crowd, lining the touchline three deep, were treated to a competitive, skil-ful exhibition. Horsham defended well and instigated most of the early attacks, drawing a prostrate save from the Bristol keeper. But, Firebrands scored fi rst – from a
close quarter reverse stick smash and, against the run of play, found the net again, fortunately disal-lowed. Just before the break Hor-sham’s second corner was parried away but six minutes into the sec-ond half Sam Stares equalised from short range. A Bristol penalty fl ick was saved before, with Horsham making all the running, Lauren Keefe threaded through the Fire-brands defence and supplied, only for the strike to hit the woodwork. With just two minutes remaining Horsham came under fi re but kept out two short corners until a third was scrambled in right on the fi nal whistle, the visitors grabbing vic-tory. In a harsh assessment devas-tated Horsham captain Gill Adams told the District Post: “We put in a good performance, but it was just not quite good enough.”
Yet, there is all still to play for with Horsham visiting Merseyside on April 11, when, if they beat Liv-erpool Sefton, the third playoff at Bristol – Firebrands against Liver-pool on April 19- will be the crucial decider, determining which of the three sides survives in the National League.

Horsham edged by the league championsSaturday March 28 - South League Premier Division 2Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 -3 Banbury
HockeyMartin Read - Sports Reporter
In a slicing wind and with an im-pressive group of injured Hor-sham senior players consigned to watching from the sidelines, Marlow edged the game, stealing the league title after seemingly invincible Henley (until their wheels came off in the run in) went down to West Hampstead 5-3.
Early in the game fast and furi-ous Banbury uncharacteristically failed to convert an open goal, and then Horsham went ahead from a short corner midway through the
half after a short corner input was passed around for Dave Leadbit-ter to oblige. Horsham success-fully shut down Banbury until the interval to lead 1-0 but, predict-ably the visitors came out hard in the second half, determined to get back into the game. They dominat-ed with three short corners in the opening exchanges, but were still held at bay- until their serial goal scorer Harry Loxton was allowed too much room and reverse stick smashed a spectacular equaliser from the wide left. Banbury looked dangerous going forward but de-spite the umpires producing more cards than Paul Daniels Horsham still pressed hard, earning short corners until conceding the lead. Undaunted, Horsham attacked re-peatedly but it was Banbury who scored the fi nal goal for a slightly
fl attering 3-1 win. Captain Duncan Howarth said:
“We tried something diff erent, surprising them and were very pleased to be ahead at the break.” Horsham striker John Burroughs adding: “We won the fi rst half but Marlow won the second.” Top scoring Banbury, beaten just once all season, fi nished with 119 goals (nearest contender Henley netting 89) and let in fewer than any other contender. Loxton scored 39 goals this campaign, 13 more than Tun-bridge Wells’ entire output, telling the District Post: “Horsham have played well throughout the season. We expected a tough game and that is what we got!”
Guaranteed third spot, Horsh-am’s fi nal encounter is on Satur-day 11th April away to endangered Ashford.
Perfect ten for the HawksU12 Horsham Hawks 64 - 50 U12 Eastbourne Lions
Youth BasketbalDave Smith - Sports Editior
The Horsham Hawks had to bat-tle from behind to secure a hard fought 64-50 victory against the Eastbourne Lions and notch up their tenth straight win.
Horsham started slowly fi nding themselves down 19-12 at the end of the fi rst quarter. The second pe-riod was a very diff erent aff air as the Hawks regrouped, tightened up their defence and were more aggressive attacking the Lions basket. Seven Hawks players scored over the next ten minutes as Horsham comfortably won the period taking control of the game going into the half time break with a 34-25 lead.
The Hawks continued to go on the off ensive at the start of the third quarter extending their lead further
to 44-25 with some exceptional play from Fin Bennett who fi nished the game with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as well as scoring the team’s 1000th point of the season. A 7-4 Li-ons surge at the end of the period cut the Horsham lead to 52-36.
A fi red up Lions team continued to attack the Hawks in the fourth quar-ter with an early 10-2 run that cut the Hawks lead down to just eight points and set up a tense fi nal few minutes as the game began to turn into a war of attrition. With just two minutes remaining Miguel Venturini of the Hawks was subbed into the game and scored six quick points that secured a 64-50 tenth straight victory for Hor-sham that keeps title hopes alive.
Scorers: Josh Lea-Clayton – 16, Fin Bennett – 13, Josh Tavolieri – 10, Miguel Venturini – 9, Harry Rose – 6, Meghan Stevens – 4, Amy Will-cox – 2, Charlotte Willcox – 2, Jamie Coulson – 2, Antonio Lozzi, Isla Head, James Lowe.

Uckfield honour league champions HorshamSaturday March 28 - London 3 South East League
Uckfield 21 - 32 Horsham
RugbyRichard Ordidge - Horsham RUFC
Uckfield provided a touch of class when their players formed a guard of honour to applaud league champions Horsham on to the pitch with two games re-maining.
Horsham made light work of the nine positional changes in the side since last week by playing with the wind at their backs and building a substantial half time lead which was always going to be difficult for Uckfield to overturn.
Coach Nick Stocker reflected after the game, “Their guard of honour showed real class and the good relations between the two clubs. Our mindset was not right, perhaps with the title already se-cured, and I won’t use the number of changes as an excuse because both sides had players missing.”
After just three minutes Uck-field were penalised for not roll-ing away and Will Bell slotted the penalty for Horsham to take a 3-0 lead.
Following good phase play from a penalty advantage on eight min-utes a mis-match was spotted and the ball was moved right for Finlay Hillicks to score. Horsham then
pulled away when on eighteen minutes Arun Thompson scored a fine solo try down the middle, which was converted by Bell, fol-lowing a disputed free-kick after Uckfield were adjudged to have lifted early in the line-out off their own ball.
The Whiting brothers were link-ing up, always posing a threat, and then Jonny Whiting scored the first of his brace of tries after the ball was recycled from a driving maul following a powerful surge by Hillicks and good work from Iain Fisher.
On the stroke of half time Jonny Whiting scored his second try af-ter multi-phase play to take Hor-sham into what was thought to be an unassailable 25-0 lead.
Horsham carried on attacking where they had left off at the start of the second half but Hillicks was adjudged to have not grounded the ball and with the wind now at the Uckfield backs the momentum changed.
When the Green and Whites tried to attack on the half way line, defensive pressure forced a handling error and Uckfield won the kick and chase to the try line. Backchat from the Horsham play-ers then saw a penalty awarded to Uckfield from the kick-off.
Regular scrum-half, Ben Rush made a committed tackle but was yellow carded when it was ad-
judged too high together with the Uckfield player for retaliation. Uckfield scored another try to narrow the gap to 25-14 and with Horsham absorbing pressure a James Whiting tackle was required to prevent another Uckfield try.
Then James Whiting wrong footed the defence and allowed and burst through under the posts from 20 yards, which was con-verted by Bell, and finally put the game out of reach.
There was however still time for Uckfield to score their third try on the final whistle to make the final score 32-21.
When asked to comment on individual performances Stocker said “Ricky Tobin stepped up on his debut to perform well at the line-out. Iain Fisher had a good game around the park and with his line out throwing in difficult conditions. It was good to get Fin-lay Hillicks on the field, albeit in an unfamiliar position for him of centre however Arun Thompson was my man of the match and showed his all round class.”
Horsham’s final league game of the season is at home to Hastings & Bexhill on April 11.
Horsham: Layzell, James Whit-ing, Ordidge, Hillicks, Rush; Bell, Mills; Brady, Fisher, Barber (capt); Grover (Penfold 60), Tobin; Em-son (Smith 30), Thompson, Jonny Whiting.

Pulborough unable to bridge the Dartford gapSaturday March 28 - London 3 South East League
Dartfordians 49 - 0 Pulborough
RugbyMartin Read - Sports Reporter
Earlier in the season Pulborough suffered a heavy home defeat to high scoring runners up Dart-fordians, but travelled to Kent hoping to finally guarantee sur-vival in the London 3 South East League. However, they were una-ble to come away with any points after being outplayed by the ram-pant, newly promoted hosts.
Initially playing with strong wind and slope advantage the young Dartfordians side soon crossed the Boro line for the first of their nine tries, two of which were con-verted. Although Boro were well beaten Dartfordians’ Dave Phillips praised them, saying: “Pulborough also had a youthful side and never
stopped tackling. They put great effort into the set pieces and were well organised around the break-down. It was good to see Tom Hoey return to our club, although now playing for Pulborough, but they didn’t have the weapons to get through the tight Darts defence.”
Three teams will go down with Hastings and Lewes already rel-egated. Boro remain eighth on 34 points and on April 11 the final day of the league season, re-visit the hop county to play tenth in the table Park House on 29 points af-ter they squeaked past Hastings & Bexhill 18-16 last week. Boro beat Park House comfortably in the opening match of the campaign but have a very poor away record. Gillingham Anchorians are ninth on 32 points with a tough last game at Bromley. If Park House win with at least four tries they could finish on equal points , but Boro have a superior points difference.
Mickel off to flying start at Oulton Park
MotorsportDave Smith - Sports Editor
The opening round for the 2015 season took place at Oulton Park last weekend and Faygate’s John Mickel was keen put his Oulton Park demons to rest. The last time he raced there, two years ago, he was hospitalised following a multi barrel roll on the first bend of the race final.
For the opening race of the year the track was still wet, although
drying out rapidly, following the overnight downpour. Mickel start-ed from sixth on the grid and after nervously negotiating the first bend began to make up ground, passing two of the leading pack. The still slippery surface claimed another few of the cars ahead and going into the final lap Mickel was in second place. Just as it looked like he would have to settle for second spot the race leader made an error and spun off leaving Mickel to grab the first win of the year.
John Mickel had a great start in his striking legends car
41 Springfield Rd(01403) 275 553dominos.co.uk
For race two Mickel was start-ing from fifteenth on the grid and was faced with a lot of work to do. But on an ever drying track Mickel rapidly sliced his way through the traffic in front to leave him lying third after lap three. Mickel then fought his way past Paterson and O'Brien to again take the win.
With two wins under his belt Mickel had to start lap three from the back of the grid which put twenty cars in front of him. But showing incredible racing skills he picked off the drivers one by one, rising to thirteenth after just one lap and up to seventh by lap three, setting the lap record in doing so. Mickel caught the one car left in front of him, his team mate Henry King, on the final lap before cross-ing the line to claim three wins out of three.
John Mickel said afterwards “I wanted to prove that my accident was well and truly behind me. With my bright and brilliant number 4, K –Seal Legend, I wanted to perform to the very top of my ability here and with an amazing team, that's exactly what we did!"
Mickel comes away with 600 points, ahead of Whitelegg with 530 and Paterson with 480. Rounds two & three are less than two weeks away at Brands Hatch

Sullivan brothers strike to help sink Shoreham
Saturday March 21 - Sussex County League Div 1
Shoreham 1 - 3 Horsham YMCA
FootballTom Norris - Football Reporter
Horsham YMCA siblings Dan and Nick Sullivan both found the score sheet on Saturday, as YM stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a 3-1 win away at Shoreham.
Midfielder, Dan, converted a Dave Brown cross to open the scoring against the run of play after just six minutes, but the hosts responded quickly and levelled through Ross Meyers shortly before the quarter hour mark.
An Anthony Hibbert header twelve minutes before the break restored the visitors lead and extended his goal tally for the season into double fig-ures, before Nick Sullivan’s second half strike sealed the points.
The victory ended the Musselmen’s seven-game unbeaten home re-cord dating back to early-November, which has included impressive wins over Dorking Wanderers and East-bourne Town.
Assistant manager Dean Potter commented: “It was a good three
points. What we’ve wanted to do in the last ten games of the season is get momentum, building ready for next season. We know we’ve let ourselves down this season, but in the last three or four games I think we’ve been su-perb.
“I thought that the Pagham result last week was great and I thought today, considering the conditions, to come here and win 3-1 was really pleasing. You look at the league ta-ble and Shoreham are in the bottom seven or eight, but their home form is really, really good, so we knew it was going to be tough. The goal that we gave away was a bit poor, but I thought in the second half we were disciplined and we managed to get the third goal through Nick and then we saw the game out with quite a lot of ease.
“We’ve now got two tough games, at home to Littlehampton and then Dorking Wanderers away, but we’re looking forward to it and if we play like we have done, I can’t see why we can’t get three points.”
YM Team: Fox, Carden, Gath-ern (O’Carroll 79), Doherty, Evans, Gedling (Dugdale 74), Hibbert, D. Sul-livan, Schaaf (J. Brown 82), D. Brown, N. Sullivan. Unused Subs: Lockwood.

Ashington Cougars U14 0 – 2 Roffey Robins U14
With two league games still to play Roffey Robins U14 team have won the Horsham & District Youth Football League Division A after an excellent two goal victory away to Ashington. Elliot Bennett scored both goals dur-ing the first half. The team now have the chance of a league and cup double as they are due to meet Crawley Unit-ed on April 25 in the cup final.Chesworth Rovers U11 1 – 0 Steyn-ing Town U11
Chesworth took advantage of the home draw in this semi final of the Heron Way U11 Cup and ran out win-ners by the narrowest of margins. It was a tense match, fitting of a semi final, and the one goal that decided
it came after Toby had intercepted a back pass, beating the keeper to the ball before shooting at goal. Finlay who was following up raced in and smashed it home to send Chesworth into the final against Crawley Town at Broadbridge Heath on April 25.Horsham Sparrows
Sparrows Under 13 – In a close game between the bottom 2 teams in Division A, Horsham Sparrows were beaten 1- 3 by Partridge Green. This was a tight encounter but Partridge Green just edged the game. Sparrows battled well throughout with a goal from Zak and Man of the Match per-formance from Andrew who played well in defence throughout.
Sparrows Under 14 – An away game at Heron Olympic saw the Sparrows team come close to scoring in the first half and hold their hosts level for most of what was a very enter-
taining game. However, 3 late goals saw their unbeaten run come to an end. Jordan M was man of the match.
Sparrows Under 13 Girls – In their last league game of the season at home to Crawley Town in blustery and rainy conditions the Under 13 girls team displayed a lot of resil-ience and kept a good shape but went a goal behind after about 15 minutes. They had a couple of chances on the break but went in 1-0 down. The next goal was always going to be impor-tant and despite some breaks from Alice and Melissa it was Crawley that scored next 15 minutes into the sec-ond half. The girls then chased the game and started to run out of steam conceding three late goals. There were good performances from Becca and Ella T in midfield and Ella S in goal but girl of the game was Emily who led a spirited defence.
Sparrows Under 15 Girls – The team ran out 5-1 winners in their quarter final cup game against Worthing.

Hornets have five games to avoid relegation
Saturday March 28 - Ryman League Division One South
Horsham 1 - 3 Whyteleafe
It was always going to be a diffi -cult task to overcome promotion chasing Whyteleafe and therefore this defeat is not altogether sur-prising.
The Hornets battled well but a dreadfully slow start to the game from them allowed the visitors to take a two goal lead in the fi rst twenty fi ve minutes and given Hor-sham’s goal shy season in front of goal that was too big a hurdle to overcome.
It took just twelve minutes for Whyteleafe to go in front as Roscoe DSane was allowed to get to the by-line from where he pulled the ball back to Greg Andrews who slotted passed Williams in goal. Not much then happened until twelve min-utes later when Bailo Camara's free kick was saved by visiting keeper Sheikh Ceesay who hit a long clear-ance up fi eld which Joe Obersteller made a mess of dealing with which allowed Andrews to set up DSane in a reverse of the fi rst goal.
It now looked very bleak for the Hornets however just four minutes later they were back in the game. George Branford hit a long corner that Gregg Berry made a meal of controlling before stretching out a long leg to loop the ball into the corner of the net.
This boosted the Hornets who now threatened Ceesay’s goal with much more purpose before the referees whistle brought to an end an interesting half with Horsham trailing by the single goal.
Straight from the restart Hor-sham had a good chance to equal-ise when Branford’s free kick was just missed by both McCreadie and Nwachukwu when the slight-est touch from either would have done. Whyteleafe were now getting back on top of play and creating the better chances, although Welch, Camara and Nwachukwu all had opportunities to grab the vital sec-ond for their team. At the other end Williams through a number of good stops kept his side in it, saving well from DSane, Graham and Andrews.
The game was sealed however in the eighty second minute when poor defending from Horsham al-lowed Jason Thompson a free head-er straight from a corner that gave Williams in goal no chance and the Hornets with no chance of a point.
Now with fi ve games to play wins are desperately needed by Horsh-am if they are to pull of what looks very unlikely and stay in the divi-sion. One of the fi ve is an away trip to high fl ying Faversham Town and the odds on getting anything from that are very long which leaves the other four to get something from. They will probably need to win all four, Walton & Hersham and Toot-ing & Mitcham away and Corinthi-an Casuals and Ramsgate at home, and then hope other results go in their favour. That is a tall order for a team that has won only once since the end of January.

Another draw as Heath rue missed chancesTuesday March 24 - Sussex County League Div 1Shoreham 2 - 2 Broadbridge Heath
FootballDave Smith - Sports Editor
Only three days after the disap-pointment of losing a two goal lead late at Newhaven, Broadbridge Heath was to leave Shoreham with the same emotion. An Ollie Moore brace looked as though it would be suffi cient to see off Shoreham, but missed Heath chances and a wonder strike by Shoreham’s George Rud-wick left the match all square.
After only four minutes misfor-tune befell Heath when a Martyn Flack clearance hit Piers McDermott and looped back into his net for a bi-zarre own goal.
Eight minutes later Heath were level, a Piers McDermott corner found Ollie Moore in the centre of the box and his bullet header left keeper Fraser Trigwell with no chance.
Heath went on to dominate the remainder of the half with good chances to score falling to Moore and McDermott and fullback Luke Bevan’s twenty yard free kick can-noning off the crossbar with the keeper beaten.
Heath came out in the second pe-riod in even more determined mood and totally ran the opening fi fteen minutes of the half. Barely a min-
ute after Dan Attwater had narrowly headed wide Heath got the goal their play deserved. Andy Wad-dingham fed the ball through to Ol-lie Moore who hit a long range shot that found the bottom right corner to give the midfi elder his second of the night.
Minutes later it should have been all over when Mark Bevan made a run into the Shoreham box and cut the ball back to Tiago Andrade who somehow put the ball wide of the left hand post when it seemed easier to score.
Buoyed by the miss Shoreham got back into the game with Dejaun Best shooting just wide from a free-kick and Heath keeper Michael Chester saving well from Alex Laing.
Probably deservedly Shoreham grabbed the equaliser in spectacular fashion. Shoreham’s George Rud-wick collected the ball and hit an unstoppable twenty fi ve yard strike straight into the top left hand cor-ner of the Heath net.
Shoreham continued to have the better of it in the closing stages leaving Heath grateful for the point in the end, although earlier missed chances could have made it so dif-ferent.
Heath Team: M. Chester, God-frey, Flack, Attwater, Bevan, Wad-dingham, Moore, McDermott, Sul-tan (Alfi eri 65), Andrade, Legrange (Mobsby 77).
