Social Director's Report- Kay Schertzl

"The Merry Month of May"... it was indeed a merry month for Bothell Lodge. The 17th of May parade in Ballard had great weather, a large, enthusiastic crowd, and a great showing by Bothell Lodge. Princess Diana Hicks as driven by Mike Nelson in his convertible, District President Chris Hicks rode in our Viking ship, there were Vikings and a troll, and we were joined by four Norwegian Buhunds walking with their owners.

Our May meeting started with a pot luck, always a wonderful assortment of delicious dishes. Thanks to Laurie Berg for heading that and to all of you who brought a dish to share. Our program was a DVD donated to us by Tap and Sue Ames called "The Hjemkomst". It was an interesting and inspirational story about a replica Viking ship built by Robert Asp in Minnesota which sailed to Norway.

Congratulations to our 3 college scholarship winners, Brooke Thompson, Gunnar Hansen, and Alec Leonetti. And congratulations to our 5 camp scholarship winners, all of whom are Heritage members of our lodge. Attending Camp Trollhaugen are Andre Richard, Makaylla Richard, and Haven Rondesvedt. Attending camp Normanna are Finn Schertzl and Lennon Comeaux.

It was also our royalty evening. Thank you to retiring princess Diana Hicks for her year of service to us. We look forward to the reign of our new princess, Crystal Kimball, granddaughter Preston and Janet Fruchtl. And we announced our King and Queen for the coming year, voted on by the Lodge Board for their service and involvement with Bothell Lodge. Congratulations to King Bob Steed, our Vice President, and Queen Laurie Beach, our secretary. Thanks to retiring King and Queen James and Joan Wraalstad.

"June is busting out all over"... Our June meeting will be hosted by Youth Director Martha Berg and the Youth Group. They will be serving a hamburger and hot dog dinner to kick off the summer. Program to be determined.

June 21, 2018

6:00 Social 6:30 Hamburgers and Hot Dogs 7:30 Program and short business meeting

"Summertime, Summertime"... Although there is no regular meeting in July, there are activities that our lodge is involved with in July and August.

The Fourth of July parade in Bothell at noon. Come ride, walk, or watch. Be at the lodge at 10:00 AM if you want a ride there.

Borderfest, in Blaine, WA, July 8. Princess Crystal will be there as well as Diana, who is the retiring Borderfest Queen.

Trollhaugen Steak Fry July 14. District 2 Golf Tournament August 11 in Spokane, WA.

We will finish off the summer with a BBQ and Classic Car Show at our August meeting on the 16th. The lodge provides the grilled steaks and chicken. Members bring pot luck side dishes and desserts to share.

Coming in Fall: In September some of the campers will share their experiences and there will be a program on the Norwegian seter girls. In October there will be a Viking Dinner with a program of Norwegian Kings. There will be a separate wine tasting fundraiser for the Ray Berg Scholarship on Saturday October 27. Save the date and bring your friends.

The start of 3 of my paragraphs are titles or lines from songs. Did you recognize them? I will ask at the June meeting which of you knew them.

Whatever your summer plans, I wish you sunny, safe, and happy days.

Hei fra Hrafngardr. Hello from Hrafngardr

We are your friendly (most of the time) Viking Age Reenactment group here at Bothell Lodge. We would like to let you know of some upcoming events in the Viking Community. We were at the Grand Opening of the new Nordic Museum in Ballard. The first day, we helped the Secret Service and Security as well as provide a living history for the Museum. The second day, we did more living history. The Museum had a family Viking day on May 12th. We were there providing hands on experiences for families to experience what real life Vikings did on their daily lives. Not just looting and pillaging! We were part of the Viking Village for the 50th Poulsbo Viking Fest. It was a great event with 1,000’s of people. We participate in many public and private events throughout the year. Members of our group will be teaching classes on 3 legged stool building as well as shield making and clay pinch pots throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more about what we do, please join us on the 3rd Saturday of each month at the lodge at 3pm. We would love to talk to you and have our group expand. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to contact us. We are happy to discuss what we are and what we do. Jarl Olaf (Seth Tufteland) [email protected]

LIBRARY CORNER

Marlis Pehling

Our Library has been given a wonderful anonymous donation of two large boxes of books. They are in our Library, but I will be writing reviews about some of them from time to time. They are a collection of fiction and nonfiction, most of which are about World War II and various viewpoints. Reckless Courage by William Fuller with Jack Haines is the true story of a Norwegian boy under Nazi rule. It centers on the exploits of a young boy working as an errand boy at a hotel housing German officers. His book portrays the warmth, humor, and persistence of his family during the German occupation. In the Hand of My Enemy by Sigrid Heide is the true story of the author’s experiences as a prisoner of the Germans during World War II. She was a courier for the Norwegian resistance when she was captured. She was repeatedly tortured but refused to give up any names. She still suffers from injuries inflicted. These are very inspiring stories.

Marlis Pehling Librarian

Do You Have Lazy Money? Money you have worked hard for and now it is not working hard for you — money in a savings account, bank CD, excess money in your checking account. Money that you worked hard for and should work hard for you, but it’s in the wrong place just laying around, unproductive. Do You Have Risky Money? Money in mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, or in securities investments. Money invested where you take the risk and you’re feeling uncomfortable about the risk. Money you may need someday and it’s in an unprotected place. Do You Have Estranged Money? Money you left behind in an old 401k, 403b, or other Employer Provided Retirement Plan when you separated employment. Money you may have forgotten and just left it behind; do you even remember it? Pay attention to your money and give it some TLC. Let your financial benefits counselor help you bring it home to Sons of Norway —we have over 123 years of Safety and Security.
