HistoryDuring the early years of the 19th century, 40 Curzon Street was home to Henry Burgess. A powerful political go-between and solicitor, the social position Burgess held was an unusual one. He moved discreetly amongst Regency London’s very highest echelons and worked closely with some of the country’s most influential individuals. Perhaps the most dramatic occurrence of his career took place in 1812, as he was awaiting the arrival of Prime Minister Spencer Perceval in the lobby of the House of Commons. At 5.15pm Perceval entered the lobby, but before Burgess could address him a man stepped forward, drew a pistol and shot the Prime Minister in the chest, killing him almost immediately. In the commotion that followed, Henry Burgess stepped forward to apprehend the perpetrator and would go on to give evidence in the subsequent trial. Henry Burgess did of course entertain many well-known guests at his 40 Curzon Street home. One of his closest allies was Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) - playwright, poet and owner of the London Theatre Royal on Drury Lane.

By the 1840s the property had become home to George Thompson Gream. The son of a Sussex clergyman, Gream studied medicine and then embarked upon a highly successful career as an accoucheur. He would go on to be physician-accoucheur to a number of prominent and titled women, including the Princess of Wales. In the early 1880s the property became home to another prominent physician - Sir Herbert Isambard Owen. Amongst his most well-known patients was Prince Louis Lucien Bonaparte, for whom he acted as medical advisor. Owen was also involved in the creation of higher academic institutions, being Deputy Chancellor of the University of Wales and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol.

40 Curzon Street also features in an historic watercolour painting by Phyllis Dimond in 1943 titled “39 & 40 Curzon Street, Mayfair: Recording Britain”. This was part of a series of paintings and drawings made in the early 1940s during the Second World War commissioned to capture a sense of national identity. This scheme was known as “Recording the changing face of Britain” and was intended to boost national morale by celebrating Britain’s landscapes and heritage. After the war the whole collection was given to the V&A, where Dimond’s painting still lies.
