Justice, Fairness & the American Dream Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive

Tuesdays, 10 - Noon June 6, 13, 20 Instructor: Lloyd Musselman

The way Americans see each other and our surroundings has taken shape as photography evolved from its earliest days. How did we view each other? How did we see our land? How did photographers see the city? And how did those visions change us and change with time? To answer these questions, we will start with the painter Samuel Morse bring-ing photography to the US in 1839, and we’ll end up at about the end of World War II. We’ll study the technology of the still photograph but, most of all, the evolution of photography as a tool and an art form. Dr. James Showalter was raised in New York, Ohio, and Illinois. He holds a BA from Maryville College, an MA from Northern Arizona, and a PhD from OSU. He was the first curator and restorationist of Old Central and has taught 25 years at Langston University. Jim is a photogra-pher, hiker, and carpenter, and loves the West and his 1920 bungalow, which he’s renovating.

The American Photograph, 1839 to c. 1950 Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive

Tuesdays, 1 - 3 pm June 6, 13, 20 Instructor: James Showalter

How would you define the American Dream? Do you think the meaning has changed over time? Is the Dream a realizable reality today in America? By viewing an Academy Award winning documentary of a brutal strike in 1985, we should be jolted into reconsidering our definition of the American Dream, as well as the meaningfulness of the term. What would the workers at Hormel Meatpacking say about all of this? How would you have counseled them as they took on a corporate giant to get wages restored and conditions in the plant improved? When they lost, did we lose, too? Did their American Dream turn into a nightmare?

Dr. Lloyd K. Musselman has taught American history at the high school and college levels for some 50 years. During his 38 years of teaching for Oklahoma City University, he was twice named faculty member of the year. Though Lloyd is retired from full time teaching, he occasionally teaches in an OCU program in Singapore. In 2007, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame. Lloyd has given presentations throughout the state using his unique blend of scholarship and love for American history to engage people in conversation and study of our great country.
