    Objectives:Successfulstudentswilldemonstratethefollowing:

    1. Abilitytomathematicallymodelanenergyconversionsystemusingacomputer.2. Abilitytousetheirmathematicalmodeltorunsimulationsandparametricstudies.3. Abilitytocommunicateandinterprettheresultsfromtheirstudiesinaformalreport.4. Abilitytogiveaformalpresentation.

    Overview:Theprimaryobjectiveoftheclasswillbetodevelopamathematicalmodelofaconcentratingsolarpower(CSP)

    systemusingparabolictroughcollectors(PTC)todriveanOrganicRankineCycle(ORC)similartothesystematMETUNCC.

    Themathematical

    model

    will

    be

    developed

    through

    aseries

    of

    projects

    using

    acomputer.

    Students

    will

    use

    the

    model

    to

    run

    simulationsandperformparametricstudiestopredicttheperformanceofthesystem.Studentswillwriteformalreportsfor

    eachproject.Asadesignclassyoucanexpecttospendsignificanttimeworkingonprojectsoutsideofclass.Takingthisclass

    inconjunctionwithME407isnotrecommended.

    GroupWork:Theearlyprojectswillbeindividualwhilethelaterprojectswillbegroup.Groupswillbeassignedandstudents

    withsimilarperformanceonindividualassignmentswillbegroupedtogether(i.e.,weakstudentswillbegroupedwithother

    weakstudents).Underperformingstudentsmaybeplacedinanindividualgroupsotheydonotimpacttheperformanceof

    otherstudents.Thereforeifyouwanttobeplacedinagoodgroupyouneedtodowellontheearlyassignments.

    Text:Thisclasswill focuson integratingandapplyingstudentsexistingknowledge from lowerdivisionclasses tomodela

    fairlycomplexenergyconversionsystem.Nospecifictextbookwillbeusedbutratherstudentsareexpectedtorefertotheir

    textbooksfromtheirThermodynamicsandHeatTransfercoursesandusethecoursenotes.

    Presentation:Eachstudentwillgivea~5minuteindividualpresentationnominallygradedonascaleof10asfollows:10/10

    ifbestpresentation in the class;7/10 if averagepresentation;5/10 fulfillminimum requirements; 5/10 (not0/10) ifno

    presentationgiven.

    Exams:Therewillbe2Midterms(MTs).Approximately50%oftheMTswilltestmaterialfromtheprojects.

    QuizzesandFinal:Idonotplantogiveanypopquizzesorafinalexam.

    Attendance: Attendanceisveryimportantforthisclassandyouareexpectedtoattendallclassesunlessyouhaveanexcuse

    signedbythedepartmentsecretary. Ingeneralmy leveloftrust inastudent isproportionaltotheirattendance. Iamnot

    receptivetospecialrequestsfromstudentswithpoorattendance.

    Peer Evaluation: For all group work assignments, your peers in your group will evaluate your performance and this

    evaluationcanimpactyourfinalgradeaswellaswhoyouworkwithinfuturegroupassignments.

    *IdopilegradingforprojectreportsandsomeMTquestions.PilegradingmeansIbrieflyskimthroughandsortallreports

    into~5piles,withthebestreportsintherightpileandtheweakestreportsintheleftpile.Ithendomoredetailedgrading

    with ingeneralthereports intherightpilereceivingthehighestgradeandthereports inthe leftpilereceivingthe lowest

    grades.Thereforereportsaregradedrelativetootherreportsofsimilarquality.Studentswhoquestionwhytheyreceiveda

    lowgrademayreceiveafrustratinganswerlikeThereisnothingfundamentallywrongwithyourreport,butotherreports

    were

    just

    better.

    Reports

    can

    receive

    a

    low

    grade

    due

    to

    fundamental

    conceptual

    problems,

    an

    inability

    to

    communicate

    ideasandresultseffectively,oraninabilityformetoappreciatethesignificanceofyourworkduetomylimitedintelligence

    (a commonproblem formisunderstoodgeniuses).Misunderstood geniuses are encouraged to commercialize theirwork,

    submittheirworktoanacademicjournal,orpursueotheravenuestovalidatethesignificanceoftheirideasandmylimited

    intelligence,whichtheycanthenturnintoastorytoinspireothermisunderstoodgeniuses.

    Yourcoursegradecanbemodifiedasfollows:

    Penalties:Studentswhocontributelessthanaveragetogroupassignments(slackersorfreeriders)canhavetheirgradeforgroupassignmentsreducedbasedontheirpeerevaluationgrade, includingreceivingazero iftheydonot

    contributeanythingtotheproject.

    BonusPoints:Studentswhocontributemorethanaveragetogroupassignmentsmayreceivebonuspoints,especiallyiftheyareworkingwithidentifiedslackers(freeriders).However,thesebonuspointsarehardtoearnandIexpectto

    awardthesebonuspointsto0to2selectstudents.
