Breaking Open the Word

January 31, 2016

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19 God tells Jeremiah that he was chosen to be a prophet to the nations before he had even been born. He also promises him strength and protection, providing Jeremiah does as God asks. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 Paul discusses the importance of love and claims that one who possesses any gift, but lacks love, has nothing. He explains that true love never fails, although knowledge or other talents can fail to endure in the same manner. Paul says that three things last: “faith, hope, and love, the greatest of these being love.” Gospel: Luke 4:21-30 Jesus spoke in the synagogue at Nazareth, at first appealing to all who were present. But he knew that they would be expecting him to do the things he had already done in other towns. He reminded them of other prophets who had preached and gained acceptance in foreign places instead of their home towns. This angered the people, who expelled him from town. Consider/Reflect: It didn’t take many verses in the gospel of St. Luke to find a conversion, not to but away from Jesus. The person, admired and respected, became the challenger. He knew their hearts and was found to be too much for them. He told it like it was. We are called to turn constantly to the Lord. We hear His word proclaimed and taught on a weekly basis. God’s word is ‘like a two edged sword’ which can cut deeply, inform and reform our lives. Sometimes we do not care for what we hear because it challenges our way of life, our pattern of thinking or our relationship with others. But remember, what is important is our relationship with God. As we recreate the scene in the Nazareth synagogue, we ask ourselves if we marvel at what we hear and how we respond.

HEALTH “TIP” OF THE MONTH

Diabetes and Mass

Every person with Diabetes should have a

daily meal plan of appropriate foods and quantities. This meal plan should include a meal every four hours to maintain an optimal blood sugar level.

Based on the information about fasting before Communion in the Church Bulletin on 1/16/2016, you should select the Mass time of your choice and eat a meal up to one hour prior to that Mass time. Please do not come to Mass without eating.

Some older people with Diabetes may be more at risk for Low Blood Sugar. Know what you feel like when your Blood Sugar is low and keep a fast-acting source of sugar (such as hard candy or crackers) with you at all times so you can prevent the effects of Low Blood Sugar which can come on quickly. Have a plan and stick with it!

Coming Fridays During Lent

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Ash Wednesday is February 10,

2016 and marks the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent. Last year we had an

opportunity for Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament each week.

This proved to be very successful so we would like to offer Adoration again this year.

To that end, each Friday during the entire Season of Lent the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the Daily Chapel for private Adoration. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed following the Friday 8:00 a.m. Mass and will be reposed at 6:30 p.m. following Benediction. Weekly observance of the Stations of the Cross will follow in the Church each Friday beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Friday Adoration can only occur if we can guarantee that there will always be a minimum of 3 people present in the Chapel the entire time the Blessed Sacrament is exposed.

On the weekend of February 6 & 7 there will be lists in the Gathering Space following all the Masses for you to sign up to be present during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Fridays during Lent. Please consider giving an hour of your time to sit in the presence of the Lord on Fridays during the Holy Season of Lent.

GOOD NEWS! ABORTION CLINIC IN TOMS RIVER IS CLOSED!

The abortion clinic in Toms River opened in October 2007 (it originally opened in Atlantic City). Once Atlantic City closed, the clinic took up residence in Toms River.

We have been a prayerful presence every month at the clinic in Toms River since February 2008 (before that we prayed in Atlantic City). The doctor, who owed the Clinic in Toms River, lost his license but had seventeen other clinics in other states including New Jersey. He attained another doctor to take his place. However, because of our presence and our prayers, the new doctor was unable to meet the rent requirements and was evicted due to a lack of patients. We can attribute that to our dedicated Sidewalk Counselors, who have done such a great joy advising women that they have “other options.”

Most of the churches in Ocean County participated in praying the Rosary and holding signs. Admittedly some of the cars riding on Rt.37, did not like our presence, but most gave us a “thumbs up”. Last Thursday, January 28, 2016 was our last presence at the Clinic and the Clinic closed on January 30, 2016.

THANK YOU GOD…THANK YOU BLESSED MOTHER for answering our prayers.
