A Message from the Pastor

Dear parishioners, Our busy summer continues on the parish property! The reconstruction of my office from the June upstairs plumbing flood is nearing completion. I am hoping that this coming week the carpet can be installed and I can start moving back in. Meanwhile, the renovation of our parish kitchen is also just about completed. The staff and various parish committees that use it should find it quite appealing!

* As you arrived on the parish campus, I hope you

also appreciated the summer “sprucing up” that is happening. We generally do a mid-summer cleanup of trimming shrubs etc. But this year we accomplished even more! For example, we decided to move ahead with an overhaul of the Allendale Avenue entrance. The driveway alongside the Auditorium had plantings alongside it which were really not right for the spot, so we have removed many of them and trimmed back oth-ers. This fall we hope to add some attractive plantings there that will not encroach on the driveway. Look for aesthetic improvements for the recycling and waste containers as well. We continue to try to exercise good financial stewardship with all of these necessities, and to make our 12 acres welcoming and inviting, while being environmentally pro-active. If you would like to make a “restricted gift” donation toward parish land-scaping, please let me know.

As we take care of the grounds, we also work to keep the building interiors clean and presentable as well, with weekly professional cleaning. May I ask you that in the church, you be considerate of the fact that this is your church – our common place of worship. It would be helpful if people did not leave used tissues, or food wrappers in the pews, and it’s always appreciated when everyone puts the kneeler up and places the missalette back in its holder, to be ready for the next Mass. Thank you!

* Please be aware of some important items regarding

everyone’s safety here at Guardian Angel Church: • You may have noticed that recently much of the

curbing in front of the church was repainted, as it had started to fade. As a reminder, yellow curbing indicates that parking is not permitted. Yellow-curbed areas must remain free for emergency vehi-cles, so cars cannot be left unattended in those areas. (You may pick up or drop someone off there.) I realize that out of habit, convenience, or haste sometimes people have parked there, but please do not do so. We have ample parking in our church parking lots.

• Recently we installed illuminated EXIT signs and

FAMILY PROMISE IN ALLENDALE

Guardian Angel along with two other Allendale Churches help the Family Promise Organization provide temporary housing and meals to Bergen County residents who find themselves temporarily without a home. Our small commitment is to provide two sleepover volunteers and another volunteer to provide meals on the following evenings, September 10 & 12, November 26 & 28 and December 31st 2019 & January 2nd 2020. Thank you to those who have responded. Our current needs are one sleepover volunteer is needed on November 28 and December 31, 2019. Food Volunteers are still needed for all of the nights listed. Sleepover volunteers arrive about 6:30 pm and depart by about 6:30 am. You are there for support more than any-thing else. Food volunteers drop off the food about 6:30 pm and you are done. For any questions or to volunteer please contact Tony Sabino for sleepover at 201-206-9911, [email protected] or Joe Zitolo to cook a meal at 917-567-5427, [email protected].

emergency lighting over the exits in our church building. All of the church doors can always be exited from the inside. We ask that if because of urgency someone must leave by one of the side doors, it then be firmly closed. The only church doors unlocked for entrance are the six main front doors. This is for everyone’s security. These ac-tions are taken not because of any specific threat, but in keeping with safety measures being adopted by houses of worship across our nation.

• At the suggestion of state and local law enforce-ment, we would like to create a parish registry of those with medical training who could be called upon to assist in an emergency. If this is you, please let me know.

In Christ,

HEARTS OF JOYINTERNATIONAL

This weekend we will have a speaker from Hearts of Joy International. They provide life saving heart surgery for individuals with Down syndrome where families can't afford medical care. 50% of kids with Down syndrome are born with a congenital heart defect that requires sur-gery to repair. They exist to help these children reach their full potential in life by granting them access to open heart surgery as well as offering resources, sup-port and education to their parents on the inherent dig-nity and value of their child.

Hearts of Joy, Intl. are currently raising funds for their summer mission at their hospital in India where they will be providing surgery for 2 children from the Phil-ippines. To learn more about the organization visit the website at https://www.heartsofjoyinternational.com/

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

Guardian Angel is a tithing parish. Biblical tithing means 10% of gross income to God. We ask half of this, or 5%, for your Parish Church.

The July 28th collection was $6,565 with $2,954 from the collection basket and $3,611 from Faith Direct.

You can help us process your donations more accurately by writing the amount of your donation in the space indi-cated on the outside of the envelope and double-checking that your check is signed. If you are choosing to make a restricted gift donation, please put the check in a plain envelope or else indicate on the outside of the parish printed envelope that the amount enclosed is for a restricted gift. Please feel free to consult Father Charlie about current parish needs for restricted gifts. All these steps will be a great help to us. Thank you!

CENTER FOR FOOD ACTION

WEEKLY STEWARSHIP REFLECTION

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2019

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)

The Gospel message today is contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not hoard material pos-sessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous life-style and become more “other centered” and less “self-centered.

Our parish will have its monthly Rosary Devotion Monday evening at 7:30 in the

Church. All are welcome.

MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE APPEAL

Next weekend our second collection is for the Missionary Cooperative Appeal.

Father Chuong Cao, C.Ss.R., a Redemptorist mission-ary, will be speaking to us about the vital work being done by Redemptorist missionary priests and brothers serving in their missions in Brazil and Nigeria. Father Chuong, a native of Vietnam, was ordained in 2001. He has served as parochial vicar of a parish in Houston, TX, and was a founding member of an English-Speaking Initi-ative in Biloxi, MS. He arrived in Biloxi days after Hurri-cane Katrina struck, and was instrumental in sustaining the parish community and rebuilding the church. He cur-rently serves as the pastor of St. Gerard Parish in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Kindly welcome Father Chuong and please give your attention to this important appeal.

The Religious Education Office is now closed for the summer and will re-open

Tuesday, September 3rd.

Irene Nayden, Parish Catechetical Leader, and Jean Borzilleri, Secretary for Religious Education, retired after 11 years leading this parish ministry. We will miss them both – but happily they are only retiring, but not moving – and both will remain here, active in other parish ministries. We thank them for all they have done over these many years. Over the past couple of months Fr. Charlie worked with a parish search committee to hire new staff for Religious Education. Frances Ferraro will be the new Parish Catechetical Leader. Frances comes to us from the parish of Our Lady of Mercy in Park Ridge, where she has served as a catechist and substitute school teacher for many years. This year she earned a Master of Arts in Religion and Religious Education from the Fordham University Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education, and has written several articles published in the Creative Catechist and Catechist maga-zines. She also serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and is married with two teenage daughters. Ali Zambrotta will be the new Secretary for Religious Education. Ali is known to many of you as a longtime parishioner. She has served here as a catechist for different grade levels and programs, and as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. She is the married mother of five children, whom she has helped shepherd through our religious

BRINGING UP THE GIFTS AT MASS

Did you know that the bread and wine at Mass are meant to be the gifts of the peo-ple to be offered to God for consecration? We would love to have more parishioners take part in this part of the liturgy, by bringing forward the bread, wine (and collection basket) during the offertory procession. Simply volunteer by approaching our teen sacristan (at the bulletin table) when you arrive for Mass. Then, when the collection starts, go the gift table by the church inner doors. The sacristan will hand you the items when it is time and you walk up the aisle to the priest. Also, our lectors may invite you to bring up the gifts – please say yes! Father Charlie

ROBBING A BANK The second reading from the Letter to the Colossians goes well with the first reading and the Gospel. Those passages warn how useless material wealth will be when we die. St. Paul continues this warning by reminding us that we have already died with Christ in baptism and risen to new life. To live this new life we must put to death whatever tendencies keep us from Christ. Wealth can be a gift from God. The abuse is not necessarily in the possession of wealth. More likely, we abuse wealth either in the ways we attain it or use it--or both. How do we abuse the attainment of wealth? I can give an obvious an-swer, such as robbing a bank, but this makes it too easy to justify myself. Do I work a full day for my pay, or do I spend a lot of time visiting with other employees, surfing the Web, taking extra-long breaks, or texting my friends? Am I honest with my customers, charging only for work I have done? As for using our wealth, we usually think of family first. Do we spoil our kids, so they can "have the things I couldn't afford when I was young"? Or do we teach them to work for what they get? Do we also think of the poor and homeless? Do we teach our children to be generous to others? Notice that Paul does not mention wealth. Instead he goes deeper, pointing out the thoughts and desires that lead to a life centered in wealth. In baptism, we put to death passion and greed, tendencies that push us to own more or to con-trol another person. Paul uses the image of taking off these vices as if they were clothing and putting on a new self that shows Christ in us. When we have been renewed that way, then Christ becomes visible in all people. We no longer have reason to look down on anyone for being poor or sickly or of another race. We begin to see Christ in them, for as Paul says, "Christ is all and in all" (Colossians 3:11).
