No matter who you are, Mother’s Day No matter where you are On life’s journey, You are welcome here.

Worship begins with chimes. The prelude is a time of reflection and preparation for the worship of God.

Please silence cell phones. Bibles for use during worship are available at each entrance to the Sanctuary.

THOUGHT FOR PREPARATION

"Mothers, I believe, intoxicate us. We idolize them and take them for granted. We hate them and blame them and exalt them more thoroughly than anyone else in our lives. We sift through the evidence of their love."

―Megan Mayhew Bergman PRELUDE Search for Peace McCoy Tyner

Gospel Trio WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Avena Ward

* WELCOMING EACH OTHER

* CALL TO WORSHIP One: We gather together to worship our Mother God, who knows us intimately and loves us unconditionally. All: She loved us before we were born, and her presence never leaves us.

* HYMN Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You Black Hymnal No. 4 Joyful, joyful, we adore you, God of glory, God of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before you, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the storms of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

All your works with joy surround you, earth and heav’n reflect your rays, Stars and angels sing around you, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain, teach us what our praise should be.

*Please stand if you are able to do so.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Matt Fitzgerald

Oh God, As a mother disciplines her children, we ask you to discipline us, teach us, guide us. As a mother calls her children to be reconciled with their siblings, we ask you to lead us to reconciliation with one another. As a mother forgives the sons and daughters who disobey her, we ask you to forgive us. In spite of our failures and sin, we know we will always be your beloved children. Amen.

MOMENT OF SILENT PRAYER WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Page 4: 5-14 930 am Mothers Day - SPUCC 930 am Mothers Day.pdfOFFERTORY Overjoyed Stevie Wonder Gospel Trio * FESTIVAL DOXOLOGY Praise God from Whom all blessings flow, Praise God all creatures

During the Response, students may leave the Sanctuary and go to their classrooms. JK/Kindergarten teachers will be waiting in the back of the church, and 1st through

7th grade teachers will be waiting at the side door of the church to lead the students. If you would like to accompany your child, you’re welcome to drop them

off and then return to worship. RESPONSE Black Hymnal No. 8, v. 3

Praise to the living God, who knows our joy and pain, Who shares with us our common life, the sacred and profane. God toils where’er we toil, in home and mart and mill; And deep within the human heart God leads us forward still.

THE BIBLICAL WORD FOR THIS DAY Pat Ruch Hosea 11:1-5

When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and offering incense to idols. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them. They have refused to return to me. I will not perform my unbridled anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim, because I am God and not a male, the Holy One among you.

* A STATEMENT OF FAITH We believe in God who has created and is creating, who has come to us in Jesus Christ to reconcile and make us new, who works in us and others by the Holy Spirit. We trust God. God calls us to be the Church, to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others, to care for creation, to seek justice and to resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life and death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God!

* RESPONSE Praise to God, the World’s Creator Tune: Hyfrydol Praise to God, the world’s creator, source of life and growth and breath,

Cradling in her arms her children, holding them from birth to death. In our bodies, in our living, strength and truth of all we do, God is present, working with us, making us creators too.

SERMON “It's Complicated” Sarah Garcia

* RESPONSE Praise to God, the World’s Creator Tune: Hyfrydol Praise to God our saving Wisdom, meeting us with love and grace, helping us to grow in wholeness, giving freedom, room, and space. In our hurting, in our risking, in the thoughts we dare not name, God is present, growing with us, healing us from sin and shame.

Praise to God, the Spirit in us, prompting hidden depths of prayer, firing us to long for justice, reaching out with tender care. In our searching, in our loving, in our struggles to be free, God is present, living in us, pointing us to what shall be.

ABOUT ST. PAULS

Making a joyful sound in the city

Saint Pauls UCC has a vibrant history in the city of Chicago. Founded in 1843, we are one of the city's oldest churches. In 1989 we became one of America's first congregations to declare ourselves "Open to and Affirming of” LGBT women and men. From founding Chicago's largest provider of social services to at-risk children to starting a home for the elderly, from housing protestors at the 1968 Democratic Convention to hosting Lincoln Park's first MLK day march against violence on Chicago's streets we are proud to make a joyful sound in the city. Most importantly, over the past 173 years we are glad to have introduced thousands of children and adults to the amazing, inclusive, life changing, uplifting love of God. We do so in worship that is traditional, but far from conventional.
