5 Senses Journal activity for Storm in the Night Co-op Day Print a journal for each child. Bind or staple at top. Activity 1. Take a 5 ft piece of brightly colored string and make a circle on the ground. Place several small objects of different colors in the circle. Activity 2 Explained in journal. Activity 3 You will fill 2-sets of 4 film canisters (8 total) with small objects Number each canister. Fill with objects like cotton balls, marbles, paper clips, rice, beans. Just pick 4 different fillers, 2 soft sounds and 2 loud sounds. Activity 4 You need 8 film canisters. Number each canister. Douse 2 cotton balls with vanilla, lemon juice, coffee, vinegar, perfume or peppermint extract. Kids will smell each bottle to find the ones that match. Cover each canister with a small circle of dark fabric and a rubber band. Activity 5. Kids taste different foods and decide which is salty, sweet or sour. We used Chips, honey, sour gummy bears, taffy, pretzels and lemon. Clip art for these items are included on last page. Activity 6 Set up a popcorn popper behind a 2 ft screen, out of view of children but not too high so they can see the popcorn when it pops.. Take the lid off and have kids sit back at least 10 feet from popper. Have them use all their senses as you turn it on. They can talk about what senses they are using and in what order. Ours were hearing, smell, sight, touch then taste.

4 SMELL I smell with my nose. My nose helps me identify

objects by their smell.

5 TASTE My sense of taste helps me tell the difference

between salty, sweet and sour foods.
