What You Need to Know

Common Core State Standards for MathematicsGrades K-8

**FREE TO SUFFOLK’S EDGE TEACHER CENTER MEMBERS**

Standards, Shifts, and Progressions... Huh?? The new terminology associated with the CommonCore Learning Standards for Mathematics can make the task of becoming familiar and

comfortable with them a daunting one. These workshops can help!

September 24, 2013 Time: 4pm – 6:30 pm

The Content Standards and the Shifts

How and Why Things Have Changed

FOCUS, COHERENCE and RIGOR make up the foundation of the Common Core State Standards for

Math. Understanding how and why the new standards were created will give teachers insight into whatBest Practice in math instruction will look like going forward. Participants will have the opportunity to

look closely at how these shifts will affect what they do in the class room every day.

October 1, 2013 Time: 4pm – 6:30 pm

The Progressions through the Grade Levels

Why Seeing the Whole Picture is Key

The Progressions are the often overlooked piece of the CCSSM puzzle. If the standards themselves tell

“where the students are going”, the Progressions documents tell teachers “how to get them there”.

Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to see exactly how their grade level standards “fit”

with the grades before and after them. They will gain valuable insight into the level of skill and

understanding they can expect their students to come in with, as well as the levels they should attain.

October 8, 2013 Time: 4pm – 6:30 pm

The Standards for Mathematical Practice

How They Support Best Practice

Mathematically confident and proficient students consistently engage in a series of behaviors that lead them

to success with math, not only in the class room, but in real life situations as well. The Standards for

Mathematical Practice are used by successful math students from grades K to 12. Teachers in this

workshop will discuss the intent of each SMP, as well as what each pract ice “looks like” in the math

classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to create a reference guide they can use for incorporating

the Standards for Mathematical Practices in their lesson planning.

Algorithms… Exactly Backwards

In traditional math classes, students are shown how to use THE algorithm for each operation, and then

assigned countless practice problems to ensure that they have “learned” it. In this workshop participantswill explore teaching algorithms…exactly backwards. Participants will engage in activities that explore

each operation from a conceptual standpoint, and develop an understanding of how natural a process

learning is for their students when the “why” comes before the “how”.

October 22, 2013 Time: 4pm – 6:30 pm

Key Words No More!

The traditional problem solving method used in many math classes instructs students to 1) Read the

Problem and 2) Understand the problem. Understanding the problem can be quite a daunting task. To

assist them with “understanding”, students are told to circle key words. In this workshop participants will

be introduced to the R-D-W (Read-Draw-Write) method of problem solving. Participants will explore

many models that are available to students for drawing an appropriate representation of whatever problemthey are solving.
