HANGING OUT: Make this week’s lesson real: With your kids, dig out the most colorful coat in the closet (or “make” one with construction paper and staples). Retell the story of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 37:3-4, 17-35. Talk about what a scary time that must have been for Joseph, but how he never stopped trusting God. AT DINNER: Here are some great discussion starters: At dinnertime, encourage each family member to look back over their day and recount they ways that God provided, protected, and took care of them. Emphasize the importance of putting our trust in God, in good times and in bad. AT BEDTIME: Snuggle up and read the memory verse: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (NIrV). Talk about how hard it can be to trust in God when things seem to be going badly, and how it’s crucial during those times to have faith.

Joseph Lesson 1

THIS WEEK’S LESSON: GREEN

JOSEPH: GREEN- JOSEPH’S JEALOUS BROTHERS

IN THE CAR:Ask your child what they learned about this week on the drive home:On your next drive, talk about ways we trust in God every day. Our trust ranging from simple things we might take for granted – like having food on the table – to more spiritual – like seeking ways to step out in faith to share the good news.

HANGING OUT:Make this week’s lesson real:With your kids, dig out the most colorful coat in the closet (or “make” one with construction paper and staples). Retell the story of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 37:3-4, 17-35. Talk about what a scary time that must have been for Joseph, but how he never stopped trusting God.

AT DINNER:Here are some great discussion starters:At dinnertime, encourage each family member to look back over their day and recount they ways that God provided, protected, and took care of them. Emphasize the importance of putting our trust in God, in good times and in bad.

AT BEDTIME:Snuggle up and read the memory verse: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (NIrV). Talk about how hard it can be to trust in God when things seem to be going badly, and how it’s crucial during those times to have faith.

Jonah Lesson 4

THIS WEEK’S LESSON: JONAH’S ANGER

JONAH AND THE BIG FISH: JONAH’S ANGER

DRIVING:Ask your child what they learned about this week on the drive home:During drive time, talk about how Jonah got angry when God didn’t punish the city of Nineveh. Why is forgiveness important? How can we forgive others the way that God forgives us?

PLAYING:Make this week’s lesson real:Arguments always erupt during playtime as one kid inevitably “wrongs” another. Take the time to sit down with the kids and truly work to resolve the issue with grace and forgiveness. Although we might feel angry in the moment, we must learn to move towards forgiveness.

EATING:During mealtime, talk about forgiveness. Is there anyone that has wronged you that you need to forgive? Ask God for help in forgiving others, as he has forgiven you.

SNUGGLING:Snuggle up together and read the memory verse together: “Lord, I call out to you with all my heart. Answer me, and I will obey your orders.” Psalm 119:145. Talk about how God orders us to “forgive others as I have forgiven you.” Is that hard or easy to do? Who do we need to forgive today?

CRAFT

JONAH AND THE BIG FISH: JONAH’S ANGER

ITEMS NEEDED: Paper plates, crayons, brass brads, scissors

ADVANCED PREPARATION: None

DIRECTIONS: Give each kid a paper plate. Ask them to color the scalloped edges of the plate. (It’s okay if they color the whole plate, but only the scallop parts of the plate will be used to make the body of the worm.) Once colored, cut out the center of the plate, so only the scallop edge remains. Cut the scallop into fourth pieces. Rearrange the pieces, so that they form a curvy worm. Connect the sections with brass brads. Color a face on one end of the worm.

In today’s story, God sent the worm to eat away at Jonah’s shady vine. He wanted to remind Jonah that God is in control. It was God’s choice to forgive Jonah. It was God’s choice to forgive the people of Nineveh. We should choose to follow God’s example and forgive others.

We Can Forgive Others.

CRAFT

JONAH AND THE BIG FISH: JONAH OBEYS GOD

ITEMS NEEDED: Construction paper – white (or gray), yellow, green and red; glue sticks, scissors, crayons

ADVANCED PREPARATION: Cut the yellow, green and red construction paper into 2 ½” circles.

DIRECTIONS: Give each kid a sheet of white construction paper. Allow them to color the sheet with a black or other dark color crayon. Give kids one yellow, one green and one red circle. Assist them in gluing the circle to the paper to look like a traffic light.

Discuss how traffic lights tell us when to go and when to stop. If we don’t follow the lights and do things the traffic light’s way, we could get into a big accident. Remind them that if we don’t do things God’s way, we can get into big trouble in life. It is always best to do it God’s way.

Do It God’s Way.

Jonah Lesson 3

THIS WEEK’S LESSON: JONAH OBEYS GOD

JONAH AND THE BIG FISH: JONAH OBEYS GOD

DRIVING:Ask your child what they learned about this week on the drive home:During drive time, talk about what happened to Jonah when he decided to do things God’s way. The entire city of Nineveh learned about God and decided to follow him. What amazing things might God do through us if we do it God’s way?

PLAYING:Make this week’s lesson real:Lead your kids and their friends in “Follow the Leader.” Walk the kids through some unexpected places in your home or back yard. Talk about whether it’s easy or hard to obey and do things someone else’s way. Let them know that – although it may not always be easy – it is always best if we do things God’s way.

EATING:During one meal this week, do things your kid’s way. Have your kid instruct you in what you will eat, where you sit, the order that foods are eaten, etc. Afterward, talk about if it is easy to do things the way someone else wants you too. Talk about how doing it God’s way always means doing it the best way.

SNUGGLING:Snuggle up together and read the memory verse together: “Lord, I call out to you with all my heart. Answer me, and I will obey your orders.” Psalm 119:145. Talk about the importance of obedience and doing things God’s way.
