Learning intention : Today we are learning to add and subtract fractions.

Success criteria : I will be able to add and subtract fractions with the same denominators.

Revision of fractions.

A fraction is a part of a whole. It is that simple! The top number is called the numerator. This tells you how many pieces of the whole you have. The bottom number is called the denominator. This tells you how many pieces make up the whole.

The line in the middle of the fraction is called the fraction bar, or the vinculum.

Adding and subtracting like fractions.

Like meaning THE SAME

• Fractions are like if their denominators (bottom numbers) are the same.

To add or subtract like fractions, follow these steps:

1) Add or subtract the numerators.

2) Place the answer above the denominator.

3) Simplify the fraction if it is possible to do so.

Take a look at the examples below

Using your knowledge of factors and multiples, you can then simplify the fraction.

Sometimes the numerator (top) is greater that the denominator.

This is called an IMPROPER FRACTION.

This means we have MORE THAN ONE.
