50 STUDENTS ATTEND HBS IN NEPAL!

Volume XLII October/November 2018 No. 7

HBS 2018 (Himalayan Bible School) was held from September 3 to 20 at the Zion Salvation Church in Nepal. There were approximately 50 students (21 ladies and 27 men along with some occasional attendees). There were only about 4 pastors in the group.

Classes began at 8:30am and were 90 minutes in length. J. Mark taught the book of James in the first class of the day under the title “Faith that Works.” Craig Swartzentruber taught the books of First and Second Peter. Following lunch, Paul Fretz taught on marriage and family.

The students were very attentive and diligent-ly took notes. They shared many expressions of appreciation. We interacted with some of them more frequently because they knew English well. Many of them requested our teaching materials.

I initially had mixed feelings about the make-up of the attendees. But I realize that if these young people embrace the truth of God’s Word as taught, and take it back to their home churches, it can have a significant impact in their lives, and on the wider church in Nepal. Each attendee received an SD card with the audio version of Dr. Yoder’s book Sojourners in Faith.

I asked the HBS Committee (Pastors Anand, Deepak, and Ishwar) to solicit written testimo-nies from the students. Lord willing, these will be shared in a future newsletter.

Thanks so much to all of you who prayed for us during HBS; and thanks to all whose contri-butions enabled this ministry to take place!

In the previous issue of Hope Horizons, we in-formed you that our 15-minute broadcast to North Korea would begin in September. Since then, there have been some changes we want you to know about.

1. Because of the high level of interest in the North Korea broadcasts by broadcasters other than HOH, the start date was pushed back until the begin-ning of this month. Hope for Today in the Korean lan-guage will air each Saturday at 1:30am. Remember; listeners must listen in secret!

2. Someone has stepped forward to fund the North Korea broadcasts for the first full year! Praise God. Additional funds have also been contributed. These funds will be used to add a second weekly broadcast. Thank you all for your generous re-sponse to this amazing opportunity!

NORTH KOREABROADCAST UPDATE

Through your prayers and generous financial sup-port, we exceeded our goal of $120,000.00 for the Bi-ble project. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Be assured, the balance of $23,000.00 is already being used to purchase Bibles in indigenous languages through our ministry partners in Asia and Africa.

PRAISE GOD, His Word will not return empty.

items of business for the Board was the formulation of a State-ment of Faith, outlining the core beliefs of the organization.

In previous issues of the Hope Horizons, we highlighted Articles 1 through 5 from the Statement of Faith. In this issue we highlight Article 6.

Article 6: We believe that the church is composed of all and only those who truly repent of their sins and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; that by the Holy Spirit, in harmony with the Holy Scriptures, true believers live a holy life; that all such make up the body and bride of Christ.

Article 6 is based on the following Scriptures (NKJV): I Corinthians 6:9a, 11. Do you not know that the unrighteous

will not inherit the kingdom of God? And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus...

Colossians 3:12-17. Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and be-loved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuf-fering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another… But above all these things put on love... And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus...

Ephesians 4:11-16. And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the mea-sure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies…causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

WE REEMPHASIZE THE CALL TO HOLY LIVING FOR GOD’S PEOPLE, THE CHURCH, TODAY!

Recently there has been an in-crease in the annuity payment rates. A gift annuity provides you with payments for life, frees you from needing to manage funds that you plan to eventually give away, and is a great way to support Heralds of Hope ministry with any remaining funds when you pass away.

You will receive a substantial tax savings by deducting a signifi-cant part of your gift right away plus part of the annuity payment you receive will be tax free. Also, there are no legal fees to contend with.

It’s easy to set up a gift annu-ity. All you need to do is fill out a simple form and write a check to Mennonite Foundation, as they administer our planned chari-table gifts. The minimum invest-ment amount is $10,000. Your contribution can be in the form of cash or marketable securities (stocks, bonds, etc.).

Please contact me with any questions for a free, no-obliga-tion illustration. My cell is 440-313-8408; or you can email me at [email protected].

Your faithful prayers and sup-port enable us to continue to share God’s Word—now in 16 different languages.

For God’s Glory,

interesting to hear from foreign countries about peo-ple who came to the Lord because of HOH sermons from J. Otis Yoder and J. Mark Horst. The Bible says people of every tribe and nation will be saved. Very glad that I can help out each month.”

James, Oregon

“Luke 4:42 and 43. They begged Jesus to stay. He said I must preach the Kingdom of God in other cities also. HOH’s vision is also to preach the Good News and to teach the Word. Radio and Linguablast are amazing ways to reach many otherwise unreached. It is a privilege to be a small part.”

Marlin & Elva, Pennsylvania

“Forty-some years ago, Bro. J. Otis Yoder spoke at Meckville Menn. Church. I was impressed with his profound belief in the Word of God as God’s Word!

Later, the far-reaching ministry by radio to those hard to reach areas and their response to truth is re-markable. I believe the message given is sound and true! That’s why I support HOH financially and in prayer. May God bless you.”

We asked, “What’s your story? Why do you partner with Heralds of Hope?” Thank you for your encourag-ing replies!

“One Sunday morning, as I was getting ready for church, I turned on the Christian radio station. I hadn’t listened to it for a while because I hadn’t heard any good, solid programs recently. I turned it on just as Heralds of Hope came on. By the time Mr. Horst had finished the program, I knew his words had grabbed my heart. I was very eager to hear this program again.

I told my husband about Heralds of Hope, and when he heard a sermon, he also was quite impressed. That was when we sent a donation. We had been asking the Lord where He wanted us to put His money, and we knew that this was our answer. And that’s how we became partners in prayer and finances with Heralds of Hope!”

“In 1985, my wife, Karen, and I moved to Browns-ville, Oregon. Karen and I knew J. Otis and Isabelle Yoder and about HOH. I listen to HOH on KWIL790 Albany on Saturday at 8:30 AM or Sunday 2:30 PM. I started supporting HOH monthly in 1986. It is very

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PRAYERFOR THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. 1 Cor. 12:26

There are many countries in the world today where Christians are martyred for their faith. Believers in Afghanistan are facing death threats; Christians in Uzbekistan, Nigeria, and many other countries all around the world face violence, imprisonment, and even death.

The modern church has set apart the month of November to remember and pray for the persecuted church, through the Inter-national Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP).

It is a time for us to remember thousands of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world who suffer persecution, simply because they confess Jesus Christ as Lord.
