A SHORT HISTORY OF THE NEW BERLIN SOAP BOX DERBY

The New Berlin Soap Box Derby Commission was created to organize and promote an annual soap box derby for the

children of New Berlin.

The first couple of derbies were organized by the NEW BERLIN POLICE DEPARTMENT, local service station

operators, and certain other local businessmen.

In 1967, the New Berlin Soap Box Derby Commission officially incorporated as a non-profit entity with 10 founding

members. Today the commission has about 30 members.

The first soap box derby was held on September 12, 1965.

The initial derby included only 12 drivers. In recent years, the derby has attracted an average of 75-100 participants.

The first derby was run on Moorland Road, north of Coffee Road. Then the event was moved to Racine Avenue,

north of National Avenue. Since 1972, the derby has been run on the permanent, 1000-foot, paved track in Valley

View Park.

Drivers are eligible to enter the races from age 6 to 16.

During the day, the derby draws roughly 300-400 spectators.

Funding for the Soap Box Derby comes entirely from donations.

The donations received are used for driver t-shirts, trophies, prizes, plaques which include a photo of each driver with

their race car, equipment, and maintenance of the race track.

Thirty years ago, the “Special Race for Special Kids” was created through an Eagle Scout project. This special event

is dedicated to children who are afflicted with physical and/or developmental disabilities. The vehicles used for this

race are double-wide. A volunteer boy scout serves as the driver with the “special” racer at his side.

Within the past few years, the commission has established an educational scholarship fund for kids who have

participated in the derby. Scholarships are awarded for those who continue their education after high school.

A more detailed history will be posted on our website in the next few months.

SPECIAL RACE CHAIRMAN: Kathlene Sisson

The race started in 1985 as an Eagle Scout Project

by TOM SISSON of Troop 41 New Berlin.

To complement the other classes he came up

with a Class S, short for “Special” for youth aged

6 to 21 slowed by any cognitive or physical

impairment.

The next step was designing a race car that

could safely carry youth with differing needs

down the track.

CHRIS LAY of Troop 41 designed and built the

first custom cars in 1985. The cars had two

seats, two steering wheels, and two brake

handles. The design allowed Scouts to ride with

and, if necessary, assist the racer.

In 1994 TECHNICAL METAL SPECIALTIES

INC. built nine new cars. The cars were

designed by ROY RATHKE, and the body

covers open 90 degrees for easier entry.

Troop 41 Boy Scouts have run the race and

supplied the drivers each year since 1985.

Over the years about 800 special children have

known the excitement of racing down the New

Berlin Soap Box Derby track.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEW BERLIN SOAP BOX DERBY

Drivers have the option to use their car numbers from last year, or choose new car numbers on a first-pick basis.

Car number 1 is reserved for the defending “Champion of Champions.”

Drivers randomly draw for their sponsors each year on a first-pick basis. Sponsors are not carried over year-to-

year.

Drivers and crews select their own wheels and axle brackets from Commission-supplied stock. At the end of the

event, the Champion’s wheels and axle brackets are locked-up and are taken out of circulation for one year.

The New Berlin Police Department was the driving force for starting the Derby in 1965.

The Derby has been postponed due to weather only twice in 49 years!

The Derby Commission is a non-profit corporation consisting of volunteers interested in kids and racing.

The Commission operates independently of, but in cooperation with, the City of New Berlin and the New Berlin

Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department.

The track facilities are owned by the City. However, they were built with and continue to be maintained with

private funds and donations.

We thought you’d like to know……….

Each driver gets one practice run that does not count in competition.

Class S racing is on a double-elimination basis. Class A, B & C racing is on a triple-elimination basis.

The six fastest cars in each Class A, B & C become “finalists” and compete in the finals racing for 1st, 2

nd & 3

rd

place within their class. The 1st place finishers in each Class A, B & C then go on to compete for the title of

“Champion of Champions.”

All decisions made by the Technical Committee and the Chief Steward are final.

THE NEW BERLIN SOAP BOX DERBY IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE DRIVERS

We always have room for more kids to have fun!

We’re appealing to past drivers to return, asking everyone to talk-up this great event with friends and neighbors, and we’re

especially asking this year’s drivers to take advantage of our “RACING BUDDY PROGRAM” for getting new drivers to

sign up for next year.

CAR LOAN PROGRAM

Are you interested in racing in the New Berlin Soap Box Derby but don’t have the time or skills to build a car?

The Commission has a FREE CAR LOAN PROGRAM that you can take advantage of.

Each year, a limited number of cars are available for free loan on a first-come, first-pick basis.

Please check our website for details on car loans for next year’s race.

If you have an EXTRA CAR hanging in the garage, that you're NO LONGER USING,

consider DONATING it the car loan program.
