MAXIMO

INTRODUCTIONMAXIMO incorporates the latest relational database technology to provide an integrated software package that brings convenient, automated management of maintenance activities. The database is designed to be flexible with interconnected applications for smooth navigation between functions. To enhance the understanding of the database characteristics and data interactions, this Data Model provides a graphical and textual presentation of the physical composition of MAXIMO. Because of the magnitude of information presented, this document is presented in two sections. The two sections are: Overview Section - Describes the nomenclature necessary to read and understand the Physical Data Model (PDM), how the model is organized. Maximo Data Model Section Describes how the MAXIMO data model is organized and additional information on the MAXIMO data model and reports .

OVERVIEWThis section explains the components of a PDM, an explanation of the reports and definition of the report headers, and general information to enhance the understanding of the information presented in this document. The scope of this document is the physical database design of MAXIMO. Both relational database technology and data modeling were employed in the development of the database. Each discipline has many facets although this document limits its scope to the facets concerned with the physical data model, or PDM.

PHYSICAL DATA MODEL (PDM)A Physical Data model is a graphic representation of a database. Typically, the content includes tables, columns, indexes, keys, and relationships. PACKAGE A package is a subdivision of a model. When you are working with large models, it is useful to split them into smaller subdivisions in order to avoid manipulating large sets of items. Packages are used to assign different tasks or subject areas, to different development teams. A model can contain any number of packages. You can build a hierarchy of packages, in which there is no limit to the level of decomposition. DIAGRAM A diagram is a graphical view of a model or package that displays object symbols. Diagrams allow splitting the display of large models and packages in order to focus on certain objects or subject areas. TABLE Tables are the fundamental structure of a database. A table is a group of like data items that are stored together. The data items included in a table are called columns. Tables within a database are associated with other tables by references.Page 5

MAXIMO

An occurrence of data in a table is referred to as a row. The identifier of a row in a table is the primary key, which is composed of one or more columns. Primary keys are underlined in the graphic data model. The value of a primary key is that it uniquely identifies a row of the table. The table represents an object defined within the information system about which you want to store information. For example, in MAXIMO, Tagout, Lockout, and Taglock are tables (see Figure 1). They contain information about availability of work assets within a business. Tables are either independent or dependent tables, depending on the composition of their primary key columns. The Tagout and Lockout tables are independent tables. The columns designated as the primary key uniquely identify the tables. Thus, rows in the tables dont depend on columns from other tables for their identity. Dependent tables depend both for their existence and for their identification on some other table or tables within the model. The Taglock table is an example of a dependent table. Its primary key is composed of the TagoutID and LockoutID, both of which are foreign keys. They reference other tables, respectively, the Tagout and Lockout tables. Primary keys - The column or columns that are used to uniquely identify each row in a table. All values for a key are unique and non-null. Foreign keys - When an application shares a key column with one or more tables, it validates the value of the column by checking its value in another table. Foreign keys logically connect different tables. A foreign key is a column or combination of columns in one table whose values match a primary key in another table. A foreign key can also be used to match a primary key within the same table. By focusing on tables manipulated by a given MAXIMO package or application, these application models capture functional and physical details. They do not record all possible relationships between tables, just the relationships that are actively used by a given application/package. In that sense, these data models are application centric.

COLUMNS Columns are attributes of a table and are elementary units of data. Columns have properties, called metadata, which include name, description, data type, nullable or required entry, and others. These are determined by the business need to record information in the database. Some columns are designated as Primary keys. A Primary key uniquely identifies all entries on a table. INDEX Some columns are designated belongs to an index. An index is like a table of contents for the database. An index increases the speed at which the data is accessed. There are different types of indexes that serve different functions on a database. The most common are unique, non unique and clustered.REFERENCE

A reference connects two tables and describes the relationship between the two tables. It indicates a link between a parent table and a child table. A column in the child table makes reference to a column in the parent table. The column referred to in the parent table must be part of the primary key. The two columns of the reference form a join between the tables.Page 6

In Figure 1, Tagout and Lockout are parent tables. Table TagLock is a dependent table and will not exist without either of the other tables. The Primary key in the TagLock is a composite of the primary keys of the other two tables, TagoutID and LockoutID. Foreign keys are primary keys from a table used in some way on another table. The primary key of the Taglock table is made up of two foreign keys, TagoutID and LockoutID.LOCKOUTlockoutid description ldkey location eqnum devicedescription requiredstate lck01 lck02 lck03 lck04 lck05 lck06 lck07 lck08 lck09 lck10 UPPER(8) ALN(50) INTEGER UPPER(8) UPPER8) ALN(50) UPPER(16) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1) ALN(1)

MAXIMO Data ModelMODEL ORGANIZATIONMAXIMO includes a large database with numerous tables. Instead of preparing a single physical data model to describe MAXIMOs database, it is divided into sub-models also called Packages. Each package focuses on a particular application of the MAXIMO product. PACKAGE MAXIMO Packages include the following items: Definition The Definition explains about the tasks that are meant for a specific application. It explains about the business rules applied on the objects, which belong to the package. For example, in the Work Order package, it explains about objects and various business rules involved to accomplish the task. Data Model Graph - The Graph is designed around the entities (Tables) and relationships belong to the individual packages. Tables included may be primary or support tables. Primary tables The Primary tables are nothing but the tables that are owned by the package. It also includes the information about the columns, primary keys, foreign keys and alternate keys. For example, the table workorder is owned by the package Work Order. The primary key for this table is set of columns such as wonum, wplaborid and siteid. The Foreign key is also a set of columns such as wonum and siteid. There can be many numbers of foreign keys, if the table has the relationship with many other tables. Indexes - An index is a data structure associated with a table that is logically ordered by the values of a key. It improves database performance and access speed. Normally indexes are created for columns that you access regularly, and where response time is important. Indexes are most effective when they are used on columns that contain mostly unique values. For example, Work Order table has many number of indexes associated with it. Shortcuts A shortcut represents a support table used in a package, when it is owned by the different package. For example, the Labor table belongs to the Labor package. But there exists a reference between Labor and WPLabor in Work Order package. So it is used in the Work Order package as a shortcut. It does look like a table, but it does show a small arrow on the left side down the corner in the table in the diagram. References - Link between a parent table and a child table. A reference can link tables by shared keys or by specified columns. For example, the WPLabor table in Work Order package has a relationship with Labor table with a key laborcode and orgid. The same WPLabor table has relationship with other table such as FailureRemark Table with a different key wonum and siteid.

Report In the MAXIMO Data Model, the report that was generated is based on a single model. The Model is divided into several packages.

Page 8

MAXIMO

MAXIMO DATAMODEL REPORTThe Report was produced using the case tool Power designer. An explanation of each follows. Package Description - Textual explanation of the Package including main function, major processes in the MAXIMO structure. Package Graphic - The application centric data model containing tables with key and column information, and relationships with a text explanation of the reference. Table List - An enumeration of physical tables associated with a specific package. It does not show the list of tables (support tables) that are owned by other packages even though there is a reference to these tables in the diagram. Tables, which belong to other packages, are listed in the table of Reference List with a suffix as (shortcut). Reference List The list of relationships between a parent table and a child table are shown in this table. A reference can link tables by shared keys or by specified columns. Index List - This table will show the list of indexes associated with each table. An index includes columns associated with it. This includes column definition indicating the primary key, foreign key, or alternate key to index. The index is associated with the columns of the selected key.

Package Asset CatalogDescription of Package Asset Catalog The Asset Catalog package includes objects for the setup of class structures and class specifications. A class structure is a group of classifications that describe an asset. For example, all centrifugal pumps might be associated with the class structure that has PUMP as its first classification and CENTRIFUGAL as its first sub classification. Class structures may have up to four sub classifications. Each class structure may have a set of attributes that apply to all assets associated with it. For example, SIZE, CAPACITY, and SPEED might be three attributes that define centrifugal pumps and differentiate them from each other. A class structure and its attributes make a class specification. Generic class specifications are defined here to be associated with assets (that is, equipment and items) or the locations where they reside. Once associated, the generic class specification can be modified to better fit the particular asset to which it has been associated. Attributes can be added or removed, and their measure units and values can be modified. A domain may be specified to define valid values. For example, a value may be numeric or alphanumeric, or it may be bound by a value list. The package also provides methods to search items/locations/equipment based on the classifications that fall under those specifications.

Package CalendarDescription of Package Calendar Calendar is used mainly to indicate the working time for equipment, craft, and labor records. You can use calendars to specify the working time or the time that the equipment is in operation. You can also use the Calendar to calculate the downtime for a piece of equipment. You can define shifts for a particular calendar with complex repeating patterns.

Package CompanyDescription of Package Company The Company package represents objects, which maintain detailed information on vendors, manufacturers, and other companies an organization does business with. An organization's storeroom locations may also be set up as a company so that these locations can become "vendors" for internal purchase orders (transfers from one storeroom location to another). Company information is maintained in the Companies table. A Company object must be created for a company before other objects, such as Inventory and Purchase Orders, can access it. A substantial amount of detailed information may be entered for each company. The information entered includes the company identifier, addresses, type (e.g., vendor or manufacturer), purchasing details (currency, tax, shipping), and payment details (bank and internal accounts, and whether the company has a payment on receipt agreement).
