The Colombo Bourse ended on a mixed sentiment…
The Colombo bourse exhibited a minute drop today and
indices concluded the day on a mixed note. The benchmark
ASPI Index closed the day at 6,155.82 losing tiny 0.78 points
or 0.01%. However, the S&P SL20 Index closed on the
positive side for the 2nd consecutive trading day at 3,490.57
gaining 13 points or 0.37%.
The turnover for the day accumulated to record LKR
399.44Mn indicating a drop of 74.21% against the previous
trading day. John Keells Holdings PLC (JKH) made a
contribution of LKR 64.03Mn to the daily turnover,
accounting to 16.03% of the daily aggregate turnover value
while topping the list. As at the daily closure, JKH settled at
LKR 266/- up by LKR 0.30/- or 0.11%, having traded between a
highest traded price of LKR 267/- and a low of LKR 265/-
within the trading hours. Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC
(COMB) secured the second place making a contribution of
LKR 54.14Mn; COMB was predominantly supported by an off
market deal worth LKR 31.65Mn, where a total of 264K
shares were blocked at price 119.90/-. Furthermore, COMB
witnessed net foreign buying worth LKR 53.53Mn while
increasing its foreign holding 448K shares. Aitken Spence
PLC (SPEN) added LKR 52.95Mn to the daily turnover, and
closed the trading day at LKR 124/- (up by LKR 1/- or 0.81%);
the counter was predominantly supported by a negotiated
deal worth LKR 47.64Mn, resulted by 384K shares being
dealt at price LKR 124/-. SPEN too witnessed foreign interest
during the day to record net foreign buying worth LKR
406,844/-, whilst increasing its foreign holding by 3,281
shares. Furthermore, Access Engineering PLC (AEL),
witnessed a decrease in its foreign holding for the third
consecutive trading day, while recording a net foreign
selling of LKR 12.55Mn. Moreover, the turnover values
recorded by the top three contributors JKH, COMB and
SPEN accounted to 43% of the day’s aggregate turnover
value.
Under the sectorial round-up, Diversified Holdings (DIV) and Bank Finance & Insurance (BFI) sectors stood out to be
the top contributors for the day with subscriptions worth LKR 126.51Mn and LKR 125.17Mn respectively. Further, the
two sectors collectively made a significant 63% contribution to the day’s aggregate turnover value. During the day, a
total of 43.61Mn shares changed hands resulting in a decrease of 42.95% against the previous trading day. The top
traded counters for the day were PC Pharma PLC (30.56Mn shares), PCH Holdings PLC (2.08Mn shares) and
Vidullanka PLC (1.52Mn shares).
Price losers were ahead of the gainers, while the loser to gainer ratio was being recorded as 97:80. Serendib Land
PLC (+16%) led the gainers, on the contrary Metropolitan Resource Holdings PLC (-11.20%) led the price losers. Foreign
participants appeared to be bullish during the day ending their 3 day bearish run, to result in a net foreign inflow of
LKR 120.62Mn; this was resulted by foreign buying worth LKR 243.52Mn and selling worth LKR 122.90Mn. As at the
week’s closure the year to date net foreign inflow stands at LKR 15.98Bn.
Week at a Glance…
The Colombo bourse displayed a positive sentiment as a whole during the week, resulting both indices to record
positive closures against the closure of previous week. The market concluded the week with a significant
institutional participation as the majority of trades surrounded large off-board blocks on selected counters. The ASPI
shot up 119.38 points to 6,156.60 points on Thursday, the highest intra-day gain since 14 September 2012 and closed
the week within tiny negative space. The S&P SL20 index sketched a steep upward pattern as investor sentiments
were uplifted later part of the week leading to a peak at 3,490.57 points. The ASPI gained massive 104.05 points or
1.72% and the S&P SL20 index up by 62.70 points or 1.83% during the week.
The turnover for the week totaled up to LKR 4Bn, resulting a 187.45% increase compared to the previous week. 19
crossings amounted to LKR 2.29Bn were recorded contributing 57.10% to the turnover level where majority of deals
were surrounded on selected counters. Thursday’s trading witnessed a turnover of LKR 1.55Bn, the highest since 26
March, 2013, with prime focus stemming on WATA and SUN.The three key contributors of the week’s turnover were
John Keells Holdings PLC (JKH) (LKR 1.37Bn) backed by 10 off the market transactions worth of 830.8Mn crossed at
within the price range of LKR 260/- to LKR 269.80/-, Watawala Plantations PLC (WATA) (LKR 693.62Mn) including 3
crossings worth 690.97Mn crossed at LKR 14/ and Sunshine Holdings PLC (SUN) (LKR 469.21Mn) supported by a
negotiated transaction worth LKR 469Mn crossed at price LKR 35/-. The aggregated turnover recorded by the top
three subscribers made a notable 63% contribution to the weekly turnover.
As at the week’s closure, JKH stood at LKR 266/- down by LKR 3.00/-, WATA closed at LKR 11.60/- down by LKR 0.10/-
and SUN closed at LKR 31/- down by LKR 2.20/. Other crossing makers were LGL (25.12Mn), CTC (143Mn), SAMP
(50.2Mn), COMB (31.65Mn) and SPEN (47.64Mn). The total traded volume for the week was 157.52Mn shares, which
was a 177.66% growth compared to the previous week. Watawala Plantations PLC (49.58Mn shares), PC Pharma PLC
(30.76Mn shares) & Sunshine Holdings PLC (13.41Mn shares) turned out as the top traded counters respectively.
Foreigners ended the week as net sellers with a net outflow of LKR 1Bn, after 4 consecutive weeks of net inflows. As
at the week’s closure, the total market capitalization stood at LKR 2.37Tn, recording a year to date gain of 9.29% and
the market PER(X) and PBV(X) stood at 16.29 and 2.19 respectively. The USD closed at LKR 133.22/-
Aureos South Asia Fund LLC disposed half of its holding in SUN
Aureos South Asia Fund LLC has sold 13,400,000 shares of Sunshine Holdings PLC (SUN) to Mouldex Limited at a
consideration of LKR 35/- per share on Thursday. The disposed quantity accounted to 10.01% of the issued share
capital of the SUN. Aureos South Asia Fund previously held 26,921,000 shares representing a 20.12% share of SUN;
however, with this disposal the holding quantity has dropped to 13,521,000 shares (10.11%).
EMSLP acquires further 20.85% stake in WATA
Estate Management Services (Pvt.) Ltd [EMSLP] which previously owned a 53.75% stake, representing 127,216,340
shares of Watawala Plantations PLC (WATA) has purchased a further 49,355,100 shares of the company at a value of
LKR 14/- per share. These quantities were purchased from Moldex Ltd and Ceybank Unit Trust and EMSLP currently
holds a total of 176,571,440 shares, which represents a stake 74.60% of WATA.
Dipped Products PLC (DIPD) stands confident amidst public protests.
Sri Lankan glove maker, Dipped Products PLC (DIPD) had to suspend its operations on Tuesday owing to the protests
made by the public in the Weliveriya, the operating region, who has demanded the closure of the factory stating that
the operations of the company are affecting the quality of well-water in the area. However, with regard to this issue
DIPD has published an announcement claiming its confidence regarding its environmental friendly operations and
stated that issue is in no way connected with its factory operations. Further on, the company (DIPD) published its
quarterly earnings results on Wednesday reporting a topline growth of 13%, while recording an after tax profit of
413.88Mn for the quarter ended 30th June indicating a rise of nearly 29%. As at the week’s closure, DIPD settled at
LKR 115/- down by LKR 2.50/- or 2.13%, compared to its previous weekly closure of LKR 117.50/-.
Sri Lanka raises taxes on alcohol & cigarettes
Taxes on hard alcohol has been increased by LKR 75.00/- a litre, and beer has been raised LKR 10.00/- per litre through
a mid-night gazette. The price of cigarettes has been raised LKR 2.00/- and LKR 3.00/- based on its length, following
the tax increase.
S&P’s confirms Lanka ‘B+’ rating
On Thursday, Standard and Poor's has confirmed Sri Lanka’s existing ‘‘B+’’ sovereign rating. This rating has been
provided while alarming three factors, the country’s external position, high debt burden and fiscal imbalance.
The U.S stocks ends at new record high levels
U.S indices moved up further to touch its new record high levels on Thursday, with the Dow Jones industrial average
gaining 128 points (+0.83%), S&P 500 index up by 21 Points (1.25%) and the NASDAQ composite index up by 49.37
points (1.36%). The U.S. Labor department has stated that, First-time claims for unemployment benefits have fallen to
a lowest level in five years; the positive news was publish on Thursday ahead of the monthly jobs report which is to
be released on Friday. Further on, the S&P 500 index crossed the 1,700 level for the 1st time ever to close at 1,706.87
and the NASDAQ closed at 3,675.74, reaching its highest level in almost 13 years.
