5G Network Architecture
5G NR network is composed of NG RAN (Next
Generation Radio Access Network) and 5GC (5G Core
Network).
• gNB node provides NR user plane and control plane
protocol terminations towards the UE and it is
connected via the NG interface to the 5GC.
• The ng-eNB node providing E-UTRA (i.e. LTE) user
plane and control plane protocol terminations
towards the UE, and connected via the NG interface
to the 5GC.
AMF – Access and Mobility Management Function
UPF – User Plane Function
Xn – Interface between base stations
NG – Interface exists between 5GC and these base stations

Functions of 5G NR interfaces:
Xn Interface:
Control plane functions are:
-Interface management and error handling
-connected mode mobility management
-support of RAN paging
-Dual connectivity functions
User Plane Functions are:
-Data Forwarding
-Flow Control
NG Interface:
- NG interface supports the exchange of signaling information between NG-RAN and 5GC
- It specifies the separation of NG interface Radio Network functionality and Transport Network functionality

9
E1 Interface
It provides interface between a gNB-CU-CP and a gNB-CU-UP.
Functions:
-E1 interface supports the exchange of signaling information between the endpoints.
-It separates Radio Network Layer and Transport Network Layer and it enables exchange of UE associated information
and non-UE associated information.
F1 Interface
Interface between gNB-CU and gNB-DU. It is also separated into F1-C and F1-U based on control plane and user plane.
Functions:
-F1 interface defines inter-connection of a gNB-CU and a gNB-DU.
-It separates Radio Network Layer and Transport Network Layer and it enables exchange of UE associated information
and non-UE associated information.
F2 Interface
This interface lies between lower and upper parts of the 5G NR physical layer. It is also separated into F2-C and F2-U
based on control plane and user plane functionalities.

Millimetre-wave communications: Key features:
• Data rate: 10Gbps or higher
• Frequency bands: <40GHz and >40GHz upto 100GHz
frequency
• Distance coverage: 2m to 300m
• Modulation types: CP-OFDMA <40GHz
• Frame topology: TDD
• The frame duration is about 10ms. The frame contains smaller subframes each of 1ms duration. The
subframe is made up of OFDMA symbols.
• Downlink (i.e. transmissions from eNB to UEs) and uplink (i.e. transmissions from UEs to eNB) are allocated
different time instances in the subframe and use same RF frequencies in TDD topology at different time slots.
• There will be GP (Guard Period or Gap) between different parts of subframe to avoid interference.

Waveforms: • Different waveform formats include are Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM), Filter Bank
Multi-Carrier (FBMC), Universal Filtered Multi Carrier (UFMC)
5G waveform requirements:
CP-OFDM and DFT-S-OFDM
5G Technology areas
Multiple-Access: • Different areas under multiple access techniques include:
• Orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA): It has been widely used and very successful for
4G and could be used as a 5G multiple access scheme.
• Sparse code multiple access (SCMA): It is effectively a combination of OFDMA and CDMA.
• Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA): It superposes multiple users in the power domain. It uses
OFDMA or DFT-spread OFDM.
Sample Landscape Report 12
Massive MIMO:
• It takes MIMO technology and scales it up to hundreds or even thousands of antennas and terminals.
• Antennas attached to a base station, focuses on transmission and reception of signal energy into small
regions of space, providing new levels of efficiency and throughput.
• At least 16 antennas used at both the transmitter and receiver end.
Other 5G technology areas include: • Multi-connectivity
• Connected mode V2X
• Network Slicing

13
3 Major categories: Massive Machine type communications (mMTC)
Wireless connectivity to tens of billions of machine-type terminals
Main challenge is scalable and efficient connectivity for a massive number of devices
Applications including agriculture, manufacturing and business communications.
Ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC)
Accommodate emerging services and applications having stringent latency and reliability requirements.
Applications include factory automation, autonomous driving, and remote surgery.
Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB)
Objective is to maximize the data rate, while guaranteeing a moderate reliability with peak error rate (PER) in the order of 0.001
Applications include virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences.
