DISCUSSIONAztec Sun Gods The Aztec’s solar calendar was based on the movements of the sun.

DISCUSSIONAztec Sun DesignLook at the sun designs. What shapes do you see?See the shapes within shapesThere is usually a thick outline to the shapes

those outlines sometimes have an outline themselvesSometimes they fit a shape in the negative space of a shape they created.Look at the borders

there may be two outlines with a shape, dot or mark to fill that borderthe face is usually symmetrical as well as the rays around itthe rays are triangular, round, curved, squaresthe rays are often interrupted by rings of designsthey create a story around the facelots of repetition

in borders, inner rings to outer rings, etcLook at the Aztec design

shapes within shapes - repetitionoutlines thick then thin and repeateddots that fill areas

Recall the lesson on shapes (traced scissors, glue bottle, etc) that you filled with texture

DISCUSSIONAztec Sun DesignThe black and white images make it easier to see the actual designs

Procedure(print this page to teach from)

trace over your design lightlyand then go over that with a little more pressureafter you push your lines thruturn the foil over and press down to flatten

Instructional Preparations/ Suggestions/ Safety:

The students should have been shown the proper ways to handle the copper pieces, as the edges were sharp.

Student Activities/ Procedures:

1.   show the students examples of the various copper tooling examples.

Instruct to create a sketch the same size as their copper piece. Leave a 1 inch margin along the top and bottom of their sketch.

2.   Once the students are happy with their sketch - tape the top and bottom of the sketch to their copper piece to prevent it moving and transfer the image.

3.   Place down felt then foil then sketch (the felt is used as a cushion under the foil.)

trace over all the lines of the design with ball point pen

go over every line of their sketch to transfer it to the copper plate. (lift paper up from one side only - to make sure all lines are traced

4.   After the sketch is transferred the students should use the Popsicle stick to begin pressing out areas of the copper (rounded clay tools may also be used). This will give the project a 3-d effect. Turn back to front side and refine edges of design. A dull pencil works good for this if modeling tools are not available.

vocabulary• pattern - repetition of any thing - shapes, lines, color

•curvilinear – A line that curves

•Shape - the outward outline of a form. Basic geometric shapes include circles, squares and triangles.

• organic shapes - An irregular shape, or one that might be found in nature (butterfly, seaweed, human figure, etc)

• geometric shape - made with straight lines or shapes from geometry, including circle, ovals, triangles, rectangles, squares
