Skye Primary School
Principal’s Report
I hope everyone had a lovely Fathers Day last weekend and all the special men in our community were spoilt by
their loved ones. By all accounts our Fathers Day breakfast was a great success with over 330 bacon and egg rolls
being enjoyed. A huge thank you to Wendy and Michelle in our office along with our staff and volunteers
Amberley, Luisa, Christine and Charlotte who helped our PTF legends John, Ann and Jill to make the morning
such an enjoyable one for our community. I would also like to thank Lennie and O’Briens Real Estate for their
very generous donation to help with the supplies for breakfast. I would also like to thank Kylie, Carly, Jill, Sarah
and John for all their hard work and preparation to make the Fathers Day stall run so smoothly. It was great
seeing the excitement on everyone’s faces as they made their special purchases.
It always takes a team to pull off successful events and opportunities for our students and families. We cannot
do it without great people coming together to support our initiatives. We have a Skye PS PTF & Helpers
Facebook Page that you can join so that you can see when events are coming up that require some support. We
will also post shout outs on the Parents Of Skye Primary page. We have a Bunnings BBQ coming up on October
20 which will require helpers for an hour between 8am and 4pm. We will also be having our annual ‘A-thon’ next
term. This is a big day that requires lots of hands on deck to make it fun for our students so please look out for
details in the coming weeks.
The ground work for our school concert are well underway with lots of rehearsals, dancing and costume
preparation going on. We look forward to you joining us on the big night(s) in a couple of weeks.
I am busy preparing for 2020 already. If you have friends or neighbours who are thinking about enrolling their
child at our school, or you have your own little ones who are starting Prep next, please encourage them to get
their enrolment paperwork in as soon as possible as we are finalising our numbers in the coming weeks.

From the Welfare Office—Kids Matter Survey
Student Representative Council—S.R.C.
The SRC are organising a walk to school month for the first day of Term 4 until the end of October. The students
are encouraged to walk, ride or scooter to school to encourage a healthy life style. If your child is driven please
try your best to possibly drop them off at Coles and allow them to walk up the hill to Skye P.S.
For younger students you may want to walk with them to keep them safer. There will be a tally kept in each
classroom to count how many students are participating. There are a number of schools competing and there
will also be a class prize for the most walkers (the prize will be a skateboarding clinic from YMCA skate park or a
group fitness class from PARC).
At the end of the month there will be a celebration breakfast for everyone who participated at least once.
Thank you, from the SRC
Our Grade 6 students are loving science, this week they made mega potato battery
some students managed to get their voltage up to 60 volts.
Please keep your eyes out for the Kids Matter Parent Survey that will be sent home on Friday to all families. We value your feedback and use the information provided to help support our students and families. Last year we received a wonderful response from families and we were able to use the feedback to better support the students and families. It would be gratefully appreciated if you could please return the completed survey before the last day of term 3.

Kitchen Garden News
WE ARE NOW TAKING ENROLMENTS FOR PREPS 2020
Enrolment paperwork is now available for Preps 2020 from the office. If you have
already collected paperwork can you please return it as soon as possible so that
planning can begin.
Thank you Ball Australia!
Ball Austalia is a local buisness who has been a tremendous support to our Kitchen Garden program by donating
hundreds of seedlings and two beautiful blueberry plants. It was lovely to have a visit from Kate Grant (the Mar-
keting Manager) from Ball Australia last week. Kate sat down and shared a meal with 6B and also went for a tour
of our garden.

Library News
Just a reminder that Subway orders need to be at school on Tuesday so that the school can collate them. Orders
are collected by Subway early Wednesday morning and late orders may mean that your child is going to miss out.
Inspire Kitchen Garden Volunteers Desperately Needed
In order for the P-2 Inspire kitchen classes to run efficiently and effectively we rely on the help of volunteers to lead small cooking groups as they prepare, cook and serve their dishes. These meals are shared by everyone at the end of each session. If you or someone you know would like to be involved in the Inspire Kitchen Garden Program once a fortnight please come and see Ryan Harrison, Inger Furlong or leave your contact details at the office. All volunteers require a current Working with Children’s check. This is an easy and free process, simply apply online at www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au These are the dates for the remainder of the year.

We would like to send out an enormous thankyou to everyone who came and visited our Book Fair and especially those who made a purchase or two! It was a huge success and so lovely to see the excitement on all the children’s faces as they found a special book they wanted to buy and read. We raised approximately $1800.00 as credit that we can spend with Scholastic for our school library. This will enable us to purchase some much needed books in the Non Fiction section. We will promote these books as they come in so be sure to keep an eye on the front library windows for new titles.
For those of you who paid for books on order during our Book Fair – some titles proved to be very popular and have been out of stock but scholastic tells us they will fill these orders as soon as possible. We will get them out to you as soon as they arrive.
Congratulations to Isaac in 6A for a correct guess on the lollies in the box – the answer was 114. Lots of other guesses were close but there was only one winner!
We would like to apologise for the delay in getting Scholastic Book Order Issue 5 books back out to you. It seems there is a problem between Scholastic, Australia Post and our school and although we get emails to say they are on their way, they haven’t arrived until this week. We will follow this up and try to rectify whatever it is that has gone wrong, but thank you for your patience.
Issue 6 will close this week.
Keep an eye out for library books at home, overdue notices will be handed out next week in order to ensure books are returned before the end of term.

ATHLETICS
Last week our school athletics team competed at the District Athletics Carnival. We competed against 5 other schools in track events and also field events, plus relays.
The weather started off fine, but started to look ominous after lunch. A lot of events were moved forwards to beat the rain and we almost got everything completed, apart from 800m.
Some of our athletes performed extremely well in their events.
Congratulations on your efforts. These children will now compete at the Division Carnival in October.

The Skye BBL began last week, with two exciting games being played last Thursday & Friday. This year we have 90 boys playing and 60 girls !! WOW
In the first game Super Kings played Renegades. Final scores were Renegades 106 to Super Kings 160. Man of The Match was Will Cowling for Super Kings.
In the girls competition Aces played X-Factor.
Final scores saw X-Factor on 80 and Aces on 115. Girl of the Match was Samantha Stephenson for Aces.
This week Bengals played Red Steel with Red Steel winning by 16 runs. Man of the Match – Ben Clarke 4A. Yesterday Stars played Falcons with Stars coming out on top by 24 runs. Man of the Match was shared between Zak Smith and Cody Tapai 3A.

This term students have been busy creating, making and exploring to their hearts content. The grade 5/6 stu-dents have been putting the finishing touches on their Exotic Clay Birds, focusing on ‘slipping and scoring’ to join clay successfully. Grade 3/4 students have been weaving patterns using their own handmade loom and the grade 1/2s have been responding to a range of different artists such as Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and Joan Miro. Prep students used Bookweek as their main source of inspiration and read the book ‘Chip,’ followed by making little seagull sculptures. Well done to the students making such gorgeous creations! Attendance Reminder
Head Lice—Take a Peek Once a Week
Please remember it is your responsibility to contact us to provide an explanation for your child’s absence from school, and where possible please inform us in advance of upcoming
absences. Protecting the safety and well-being of children through the reporting and monitoring of absenteeism is the responsibility of both parent/carers and schools.
You can notify the school the following ways –
* Phone the absence line – 9786 1555 press 1 – please leave your child’s name and grade and the reason they are absent
* Sentral – log on to Sentral. Click on Absences to record your child’s absence and the
reason they are away.
* If you going on holidays or know that your child will be absent write a note to the teacher or notify the office prior to the absence.
If you do receive a SMS from the school regarding an Unexplained absence please respond immediately.
Head Lice is very common in school-aged children. People get head lice from direct head-to-head contact with
another person who has live head lice. This can happen when children play, cuddle or work closely together.
If your child has head lice it is important that they are excluded from school until their hair has been treated.
(Once treatment has commenced they can return to school).
It is also very important to notify the school and repeat chemical treatment in seven
days to kill any newly hatched eggs, there is no topical treatment that kills 100% of
the eggs.
FINDING HEADLICE
Using conditioner and a nit comb is a cheap and effective way to find head lice in
your child/ren’s hair. NOTE conditioner DOES NOT KILL head lice but stuns them for
a short while so they cannot move or hang onto the hair, giving you a chance to
comb through the hair with the lice comb to determine if your child has lice. If you
detect head lice, begin a suitable chemical treatment method straight away.
TREATMENT
Please speak with your local pharmacist about current treatments available, follow product instructions careful-
ly and repeat within 7 days.
Treatment should be extended to all family members in the same household, if a child has an infestation, their
linen needs to be washed and changed also any comforters that they might take to bed (teddy, blankets etc).
it is also recommend your child bring their school hat home to be washed as well.
It is also important that children are reminded not to share hats, brushes, combs, scarves, hair bows ribbons
and that boys and girls with long hair should have their hair tied back to help avoid infestation.
For more information about head lice treatment, please feel free to contact me for advice.
