Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal will receive a mailing from Archbishop Sample in the next few days. At all Mases next weekend, additional information will be provided in the bulletin. Appeal funds are used to help fund Archdiocesan offices and agencies that assist the parishes and their people. In addition, part of the funds are used to assist retired archdiocesan priests and seminarian education. The theme of the 2019 Archbishop’s Catholic appeal is, “Renew our dedication to Christ through education and for-mation.” As you consider the amount you are able to pledge to help these ministries, please reflect on the following: Contributing to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is to journey with others toward Heaven. Take a moment to honestly exam-ine all the God-given blessings in your life and then ask not yourself, but ask God: “What is just?” By our baptism and our confirmation in the Catholic church, each of us is called to serve as a good shepherd. We’re called not only to follow Christ but to be Christ. Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as you consider the above reflections, and please give generously according to the bless-ings God has given you. More information is available online for download at osd.archdpdx.org. Your support and prayers for the Catholic Church in western Oregon and all the people we serve are greatly appreciated.

Gospel Reflection Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 3 — Luke 1:1-4; 4:21-305:1-11
After the disciples have fished all night and caught nothing, Jesus tells them to put their nets out again. Although not sure they should, but trusting Jesus, they do it—and catch an overflow of fish! Then Jesus tells them he has a bigger job for them: to be his disciples and reach out to people.
How have you been good to those who might not be
your friends? What can you do for them in the weeks to come?

“Love in a Fearful Land”
Facilitated by Eileen Parfrey
In 1981, American priest, Stanley Rother was martyred by government militia for the crime of protecting his people from their violence. Like Archbishop St Oscar Romero, Rother was beloved and venerated by the people he served. In 2017, he was named Blessed by the Catholic Church. What does his example and the love he bore for his
people have to teach us in our time and our place?
How can a people persevere along the path toward God, when the realities of life sabotage the urge to-ward gentleness and inclusion?
What are stories and examples from scripture, from fellow travelers, from our own lives?
How do those stories encourage and equip us to meet the challenges of our times?
TUESDAY—February 19th 9:30 AM—2:30 PM
