Third Sunday in Advent ■ LIGHT THE ADVENT WREATH In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit … Come Lord Jesus, be our light! We rejoice as we prepare our hearts to welcome you. _________________________________________ ■ READ THE GOSPEL for the Third Sunday of Advent (Cycle A) Matthew 11:2–11 “The poor have the good news proclaimed to them.” _________________________________________ ■ REFLECT WITH A STORY John the Baptist sent his friends to go find Jesus, and to ask him if he was really the Messiah. Rather than just answering with a simple yes or no, Jesus told them to tell John: “The deaf can hear, the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.” Jesus is not speaking in code. He is telling us he has come to reach out to the poor and suffering. As his disciples, we are called to do the same. Who are these people in our world today? They are family members who are sick or lonely. They are our classmates who are bullied. They are the men and women on our streets who don’t have a place to sleep at night. And they are the families around the world who, because of poverty or violence in their countries, struggle to make it through each day. Moo Kho is one of these people. She lived in Myanmar, a country in Asia, but fled to the United States with her husband and child after her village was burned down. She was given the opportunity to work at a candle-making company in the United States, Prosperity Candle, which pays her enough so that she can afford food and a safe place for her family to live. Moo Kho had the Good News proclaimed to her when she was offered a place to live and work in the United States. We can prepare the way for Jesus by reaching out and welcoming those who are most in need, like Moo Kho.

PRAY Jesus, help us prepare our hearts for your coming at Christmas by caring for people in our family, school, neighborhood, and for others in need throughout the world. Amen REFLECT What is one way that your family can reach out to someone in need before Christmas? ACT This week, proclaim the Good News by preparing a meal or care package for someone who doesn’t have what they need to make it through each day. GIVE Let Christ’s light shine on a world in need. Purchase beautiful candles made by Moo Koo and other women at Prosperity Candle. Visit crsfairtrade.org.

ADULT FORMATION UPDATE

Welcome! Thank You for Coming With its simple, accessible message, this pamphlet reaches people with the message that your parish welcomes and invites everyone to come, to worship and to be a part of the Church—even if they have been away.” People visit churches for various occasions, including celebrations and somber events. We want to assure you the Church is a safe place to express how people might be feeling. It’s important to recognize the feelings and thoughts those visiting might encounter: • Feeling a renewed urge to pray • A deep desire to come to Mass again, but not

ready to join a parish • Attraction to the Catholic Church, but not

quite ready of a Mass • An interest in becoming a Catholic This pamphlet is ideal for those visiting the Church. With encouragement from Pope Francis, it offers resources and an invitation into the mystery of God.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

From the loneliness of his prison cell John the Baptist asks of Jesus: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” The weeks before Christmas offer much to be joyous about, celebrating with family and friends, the glitter of seasonal decorations, the excitement of gift giving and receiving. But in our midst there are the lonely and neglected, the poor, the hospitalized, the wayward, the shut-ins. There are those who feel that they have no hope. To whom should they look? Discipleship in the Lord includes being good stewards of others. Are there those in our family, our neighborhood, our community to whom we can reach out to show them a sign of Christ’s presence in their midst?

The chancery has been made aware of local financial scams. Parishioners/individuals are receiving texts requesting money/gift cards/etc., allegedly from a priest (typically from the individual’s surrounding area). Please advise your parishioners, that should they receive such, to disregard, then immediately contact the priest alerting him of the scam. _______________________________________

LESSONS AND CAROLS

This Sunday, December 15, 2019 3:00

Cathedral of St John the Evangelist All are invited to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist's annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, featuring readings and music for the season of Advent. Under the direction of Thomas Niel, the Cathedral Choir will sing carols old and new, with interspersed readings that recount salvation history and culminate in the birth of the Messiah. This event is free of charge. For more information please contact the Cathedral at (337) 232-1322.

The Light is On

The final night for “The Light Is On for You” will be Wednesday, December 18. Confession will be heard in Church from 6:30-8:00 . Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to be reconciled and begin anew your journey in faith this Advent. ____________________________________________

FOR YOUR INFORMATION Effective December 31, 2019 we will no longer sell candles for home use. The government now requires that we collect sales tax on any candles taken from the church for home use. We cannot differentiate between monies for candles from those burned in the church and those burned at home. Therefore, after December 31, 2019 we cannot have candle sales for home use. This does not affect candles burned in the church. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We are looking for a local vender who may carry the candles for you to purchase. ___________________________________________

REASON TO REJOICE

Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healing from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). _____________________________________________

FEAST OF FAITH

The Shape of the Mass

In the renewal of the liturgy that followed the Second

Vatican Council, the full, conscious, and active participation of the assembly was the primary consideration. By participation, the Council Fathers did not mean just joining in the singing and the spoken responses, but active engagement and prayerful understanding of the rites. They envisioned a transparent liturgy, a worship that spoke so directly to the hearts and minds of the faithful that it would require no explanation at all.

The liturgy itself is the best possible catechesis on the liturgy. What does the liturgy teach us? It shows us the ministry of Jesus continuing in the present. He gathers a community. He calls us to prayer and repentance and praise. He teaches us with the very word of God. He does not send us away empty, but sets before us a marvelous banquet, feeding us with his very body and blood. Then he sends us forth to do what he has done—to give ourselves for others, not just in words, but in deeds. The Mass is the pattern of our Christian lives.
