Let Your Heart Be the Manger That Mary Places Jesus Upon
Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Joyeux Noël, Frohe Weinachten, Buon Natale, Feliz Natal, Vrolijk kerstfeest,
Crăciun fericit, Wesołych świąt Bożego Narodzenia. No matter what language you speak to wish someone
a Merry Christmas, we are all rejoicing for the same reason: the birth of Jesus. But we should not be cele-
brating our Lord’s Nativity only on December 25th. Charles Dickens wrote in the Christmas Carol, a now
converted Ebenezer Scrooge declares: “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I
will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all three shall strive within me. I will not shut
out the lessons that they teach.” Just as the fictional character so beautifully exclaimed, we need to allow
the Nativity of Jesus to occur in our everyday lives and not just once a year. Mary labored to bring her son
into this world. Any mother can agree that labor and giving birth to a child is a most painful, arduous and
yet a truly joyful and rewarding experience. The same could be said for both man and woman. When we
allow Jesus to be born into our hearts each and everyday, it can sometimes require us to travel down a
road that can be both painful and arduous but it is also joyful and rewarding. Remember, when we follow
Jesus, we must take up our cross. Our hearts become the manger that Mary places Jesus upon. People
can see Jesus’ Nativity when you pay for someone’s coffee who is standing behind you in line, give a
stranger a heartfelt and genuine compliment, send a thank you note, cook a meal for someone, forgive
someone who wronged you, smile at a homeless person, pack two lunches and give one to someone in
need, place a simple post-it note (on a computer screen, work area, locker, coffee cup, bathroom mirror)
that gives a small compliment or a word of encouragement. When we allow Jesus’ birth to be illuminated
in our hearts through our actions, He can and will be born in the hearts of others. When Mary was pregnant
with Jesus, He was close to her heart. After she gave birth, He rested near her heart. When Jesus was tak-
en down from the Cross, He was given to Mary and she again held Him next her heart. My Christmas wish is
that may our sweet Mother Mary hold you and your family close to her most loving and Immaculate Heart
both now and all year long. –Sherrie Clutts DRE
