Music is a source of comfort and stress relief for all of us, and as a teacher, I love helping to promote lifelong learning. It’s rewarding and humbling to see students love their music as much as I loved my own favorite songs when I started.” Dreis creates most of his own song and skills worksheets, and this allows him to really personalize lessons for his students. Some examples of this include large- scale music and audio recordings for visually-impaired students, adjusting the keys of songs to match students’ singing voices, and using partial capos and alternate tunings to accommodate very young students and adults with hand limitations. In addition to teaching students, Dreis wrote two well-received harmonica songbooks for Hal Leonard Music Publishing: First 50 Songs You Should Learn On Harmonica, (2016) and The Ultimate Harmonica Songbook (2018). The current conditions meant moving all of his students online this spring, and Dreis upgraded the tech setup in his studio to make sure he could always provide the best audio and video possible for students, so they can see and hear each other clearly. He also regularly records audio demos of songs and exercises for students, which they use for practicing and for playing duets during lessons. In case you’re wondering, Dreis poses and answers a frequently asked ques- tion: how long for a total beginner to learn a tune or song? “By the end of the first lesson, a guitarist, ukulele player, or harmonica player will be able to strum the chords to a song, or play a melody, one note at a time. Sure, you’ll get better at it with practice, but pretty much anybody can do it well enough on their first try to have fun and join the game.” Dreis structures his rates so that an hour lesson costs less than two half-hour lessons. Since an hour is the standard length for teens and adults, this builds in a discount for most students. But if an hour lesson isn’t affordable, half-hours are a good option. ‘Tis the season, and music lessons – whether for the rank beginner or those who are looking to advance and refine their skills – are perfect for holiday gift-giving, birthdays, and other special occasions, and Dreis offers gift certificates for lessons. His students’ comments reflect both the range of their ages as well as their goals. Leo Florenz of Keene, age eight, says, “I like learning from Tad because you learn quickly. I started with ukulele, and now I’m learning guitar.” Sarah Patriquin, also of Keene reports that, “Both my kids really enjoy their lessons with Tad every week! Even though the lessons are now remote, they still get a ton out of them and are learning new things!” Wayne Imon of Richmond says, “Working with Tad has been such a wonder- ful experience...I wanted to write my own songs, which I am now doing.” And Jim Talbert of Fitzwilliam reports that, “After 50 years of ‘playing’ guitar, Tad is Music Lessons: A Gift For Life helping me to understand the guitar, and to actually play it better!” With testimonials like these, what better time than now either to pursue your own musical passion or encourage the same for a loved one or dear friend? For more details or to inquire about a gift certificate, contact Dreis at 603-762-9378 or visit his website: www. TadDreis.com. “The pandemic put undue stress on a system that was already under pressure,” says Roe-Ann Tasoulas, MFCC director. “Our local farms, food entrepreneurs, and community organizations met adversity by devel- oping new innovative ways to get food to all of us. Let’s celebrate the tremendous amount of food produced and delivered to Monadnock's tables, by taking a moment to hear stories of how the food system impacts our lives.” Kate McNally, host of NHPR’s The Folk Show is emcee of the event and will kick off the evening with a story of her “mostly green thumb” and her connec- tion with gardening. Nine other storytellers will share 10-minute vignettes over the course of two hours. One story captures how one mother’s access to healthy, fresh vegetables and fruits through the Mo- nadnock Farm Share program impacted her family’s life. Another illustrates how a woman’s passion for agriculture landed her on the Environment and Agri- culture committee as a NH State Representative. Chef Jordan Scott will share how his time in a culi- nary class at Keene High School ignited a passion for cooking that lead him across the country and back, becoming a local food advocate along the way. Farmers Holly Gowdy of Brookfield Farm, Marty Castriotta of Village Roots CSA, Gene Jonas of Hungry Bear Farm, and Beth Hodge of Echo Farm puddings provide a glimpse into their day-to-day lives bringing food to local tables . The Monadnock local food system is rich with farms, food entrepreneurs, and community organiza- tions who work to get food on all the tables of its resi- dents. “We can buy products like Manning Hill Farm milk, Cheshire Garden preserves, Main Street Cheese or Edgefield Farm lamb at farm stands, farmers markets, or in grocery stores, thanks to collaboration among farmers and Food Connects,” Tasoulas continues.
