Phoenix scouts Devonport soccer schoolThe Wellington Phoenix are currently in

negotiations with North Shore United Football Club to open a soccer school in Devonport, the Flagstaff understands.

The Phoenix have a football academy in Wel-lington at Scots College and are now looking further afield for new talent.

In December, the team’s general manager said

they were keen to set up a school in Auckland.Nothing had been finally decided between the

two clubs when the Flagstaff went to press on Monday. North Shore scored a major coup last October, when it signed Paul Temple as Techni-cal Director and First Team Head Coach. He is Assistant Coach for the New Zealand Under 17 men’s team.

One of the first changes implemented by Auckland Council in Devonport was to lock the doors of the former Devonport Borough Council Boardroom. Previously open, the room became unusable to the public.

Last month, Auckland Council Property Limited said it will reopen the boardroom. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen says: “They have agreed to reinstate it to its former glory and useful-ness and people will be able to use it for community meetings again.

are part of a subgroup we formed. Members are drafting a business plan on how to utilise the downstairs. They are looking at ways to get our old i-SITE back there, to retain the area office and possibly others,” he says.

The i-SITE won’t need all the space it oc-cupied at the old area office in the past. When the service moved to the ferry building, it was significantly downsized – in space and staff numbers. Four long-time staff members were sacked and local volunteers were told they were no longer needed. The new i-SITE office was squeezed in next to Fullers and occupied less than a quarter of its previous space. Cohen says that part of a new business plan requires mak-ing local volunteers part of the i-SITE again, especially during peak hours.

Zoie the well-known swimming dog, swam from Cheltenham Beach to Takapuna Beach last week.

The distance of the swim was around 5.6km. Owner John Lindeman says Zoie “seems

happiest swimming about 100 metres off-shore.”

Zoie rose to fame this summer with her laps up and down Cheltenham Beach.

The experiment of locating the Devonport i-SITE on the wharf has failed.

A year after the i-SITE moved to the Devonport Wharf, discussions are afoot to relocate it back to its old home at 3 Victoria Road, at the former Devonport Borough Council building.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Mike Cohen said at the board’s February meeting that the wharf move had been a failure for Devonport. “We are looking at getting our old i-SITE back. There is no question that the present i-SITE model and location don’t work. What we need is an information service rather than a kiosk selling things,” he says.

Cohen says he has the support of the Devonport Business Association and the Navy Museum and that council-controlled organisa-tions Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and Auckland Council Property Limited (ACPL) are also on board.

ATEED initiated the i-SITE’s move to the wharf but was now willing to reverse that decision, Cohen said. ACPL has confirmed the building is no longer on the market. “They

A primary school is turning playtime on its head in an attempt to get kids eating more healthily.

Instead of snacking and rushing off to play, older students at Bayswater School are play-ing first, then teachers supervise them eating before they go back to class.

For younger children, Years 0 to 2, the school has introduced “Read and Feed” at 10 am. While teachers read to the class, children are allowed to nourish themselves with fruit and veges from their lunch boxes.

Bayswater School principal Lindsay Child said parents often found that lunch boxes came home and only one bite had been taken out of the apple.

“We want our kids to finish that apple, and the sandwich too, because it is good for their

health and concentration.” Schoolchildren often don’t finish their

lunch because they can’t wait to run off and play during break times and they find it hard to sit still, says Child.

A parent told Child about research on the issue that had been done in the US and the principal was happy to give it a go. So this term Bayswater School is reversing the pattern of eating and playing at morning tea time. Lunchtime has been left unchanged for now.

“Without the temptation of play there, we hope that the kids’eating habits will improve,” says Child.

Early feedback has been mixed, says Child. “I have had limited but positive feedback from parents. The teachers hate it

because it is harder for them to organise, and some of the kids claim that they are starving, not realising that we are asking them only to wait an extra ten minutes for their morning tea,” she laughs.

“It’s really an experiment and we will see how it goes once the term is over. I am keen to hear from parents if the lunchboxes are empty now when they get home and from teachers whether the kids are more focused. We hope to achieve both those things,” Child said.

“And if we don’t, we’ll try something else,” she says.

Three young New Zealand artists return to Devonport for an exhibition that focuses on what drives them to be artists.

Nicholas Boyd, Paris Kirby and Yonel Watene say growing up with the support of local artists, teachers and the Depot Artspace gave them their first creative push. Now they have returned the favour and returned to the gallery with the exhibition Driving Force.

Self-taught and award-winning painter Yonel Watene used to paint at the Victoria Theatre.. He had his first ever show Flat White at the Depot in 2006. He was 16 at the time and a student at Takapuna Grammar School. “I went to see Linda Blincko at the Depot and showed her my paintings on an old Motorola phone. She said I should have a show and then bought the first painting I ever sold,” he says.

Watene remembers being inspired by Nicholas Boyd then. “His painting were hanging at the Devonport Deli and Rob Tucker, Sam Edward and I always talked about how amazing his composition and sense of space were,” he says.

Boyd, who is five years Watene’s senior and spent his primary school days in Devonport, didn’t start painting until he was 21. Now he can’t stop. “It’s all about just doing it. I got into it for some reason and now I just gotta do it and see if I can outdo myself with my next painting. Monetary success is just a bonus,” he says.

Kirby is the youngest of the three. She left Devonport only two years ago and is completing a Master of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. Kirby says Devonport was a strong driver for her becoming an artist, starting with her time at Vauxhall Primary School. “I took art classes with a woman called Gretchen when I was still small. Everyone in my age

group from here has gone on to do creative things,” she says

The Depot also drove Kirby forward creatively. “I always wanted to exhibit here but was too scared. I thought my work wasn’t good enough yet. It is important to have a local facility with such a great standard to

inspire young artists like me to get better,” she says.

AT spokesperson Mark Hannan says: “Specific funding for Lake Road is not in the Mayor’s proposal, along with many other deferred/reduced projects across Auckland as a result of the severely constrained financial envelope.”

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen says a reason for the Lake Rd budget disappearing was that AT had identified the peninsula as a low-growth area, despite the council’s proposed controversial Unitary Plan zoning changes that are aimed to promote

its growth.Hannan says the Corridor Management plan

currently under way will “help identify the most critical issues to resolve for Lake Road, the timeframe needed and likely scale of benefits and risks of not fixing the problem.”

Should AT decide a particular Lake Rd prob-lem does need fixing, that project will have to compete with all the 176 projects on the project list, says Hannan. This means it might have to knock another project off the list. In other words, don’t hold your breath.

Top priority on the ITP list is the City Rail Link with a budget of more than $2 billion. The next stage of the Devonport ferry terminal is ranked as project 147 with a budget of $45.4 million. The upgrade of the Bayswater ferry terminal is project 154 with a budget of $15.2 million. No other projects on the Devonport peninsula are on the list.

With population and need determining the future funding of Auckland’s suburbs, Devonport and Takapuna are in danger of having an ever-diminishing local board budget to pay for the services it provides, says Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Mike Cohen.

“The model doesn’t take into account the tens of thousands of people who come here

to work and travel. If determined strictly on our population, our area would have lost 25% of its budget, but we managed to keep it as it is for now,” he says.

For now – because being surrounded by sea the area won’t grow significantly in the future. “It won’t be CPI-adjusted, so technically it will go down over time,” Cohen said.

The new Devonport Libary has only just opened but already Auckland Council is looking at reducing its opening hours due to budget tightening.

Reducing weekly library opening hours by three and a half hours is proposed in Auckland Council’s 10-year budget.

Other proposed cuts that could have lo-cal effect are increased chemical spraying of weeds and the removal of some street gardens and planting others with perenni-als or more low-maintenance plants, says Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen.

A huge fight erupted several years ago over plans to remove the council flower beds outside the Esplanade Hotel and re-place them with low-maintenance native plantings. Submissions on the budget close on March 16. They can be made online at shapeauckland.co.nz

Devonport Library – the official opening

Around 300 people attended last week’s official Devonport Library opening cel-ebrations. It was a somewhat anti-climatic affair. The new Devonport library had been open to customers more than three weeks.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Mike Cohen and Auckland Councillor Chris Darby spoke of the many hurdles that needed to be overcome since a first survey in 2003 by Devonport Library Associate Barbara Cuthbert and library manager Sue Parr planted the seed, including the discus-sion about the new library’s location.

“The project was always fairly fragile,” said Cohen who acknowledged those who helped pushing it through, as well

as its opponents.Darby reminisced about battling through

the project with insufficient budget and stringent tests by council’s Urban Design Panel.

“I have been told patronage is at least four-fold what it used to be. On a Saturday, it has gone from 400 to 1,500,” he said.

Jan Mason from the Devonport Library Associates said the building, “with my maunga on one side and my moana on the other” reminded her of a Marae.

By the time the 90 minutes of speeches came to a close, most of the crowd had left and missed the party that followed near the Moreton Bay Fig..

Financial personal training firm, enableMe has launched its fifth franchise. The new office in Takapuna is the first of two planned for Auck-land’s North Shore.

enableMe founder Hannah McQueen says the company’s rapid expansion is down to Kiwis be-coming more aware of their money.

Stricken Kea back in April – staff safety improvements likelyThe damaged ferry Kea is likely to be back

serving the Devonport/Auckland route by April.

The ferry lost control just off Devonport on February 17, veering off course and crash-ing into Victoria Wharf, injuring more than a dozen people.

Fullers Ferries CEO Doug Hudson said the front end of the Kea was seriously damaged and was being repaired. Insurance assessors were currently working out the cost of the damage. Fullers had been criticised for seats downstairs on the Kea not being bolted down. These would more than likely be bolted down in the repair, Hudson said.

The repair would be run in conjunction with Kea’s annual survey and Maritime New Zealand would run an independent check of the boat prior to its relaunch.

Hudson refused to comment on the exact cause of the crash as it was under investigation by Maritime New Zealand and the Transport Accident Investigation Commission.

Fullers was conducting its own enquiry, but

it would be running closely alongside the other investigations. “They are trained investigators and we are cooperating fully with them,” Hudson said.

Following the crash Fullers had contacted all 16 injured passengers and “fortunately “ none of them needed to stay overnight in hospital, Hudson said.

On a case-by-case basis Fullers had offered them assistance such as taxis home from hos-pital and help with medical bills not covered by ACC, he said.

While the Kea – purpose built for the Devonport-Auckland run – was out of action, other boats were filling in, often struggling to

load on and off in the busy summer tourist season. Many boats have been running late. The Flagstaff put it to Hudson that a reliable service had now become unreliable and asked if passengers would be given discounts. Hudson said there were no plans to offer any discounts.

The Kea would cost $8 million to replace but getting a back-up for the vessel was compli-cated. Auckland Transport has indicated in the longer term it wants sailings every 15 minutes on the route and this suited smaller boats than the Kea. But smaller boats would struggle to berth in rough conditions, Hudson said.

The Flagstaff checked back on Maritime New Zealand records and could find only one report on the Kea – in 2004 a person went over-board. There was no public record of incidents regarding the Kea’s steering - such as the one as recent as last year, when the boat lost control in the middle of the harbour.

Hudson said Fullers reported every inci-dent that involved the Kea, no matter how minor. It was up to Maritime New Zealand to investigate.

New ferry services launched by EasterThe launch of additional evening ferry ser-

vices to Devonport is now set down for Easter.Fullers said in January that it wanted half-

hourly evening services to Devonport (on Mondays to Thursdays) to start in early Febru-ary and it was talking to Auckland Transport (AT) about setting up new bus connections to correspond with the sailings.

Fullers CEO Doug Hudson told the Flag-

staff Fullers was timetabling the services to start by Easter (April 3).

By that time he hoped the buses would be linked to the ferries on the Devonport side.

There was an expectation that buses would meet the ferries but if there wasn’t a connec-tion for every ferry by Easter, Fullers would let customers know ahead of time, Hudson said.

Double investigation launched into crash

Staff first-aid training investigatedFullers are looking at first-aid training for all

staff. On the Kea during the accident there were three staff for 61 passengers. The captain was first-aid trained but his priority during the initial stages of the accident was the ship, making sure it was not taking on water and then getting it to a safe berth, Fullers CEO Doug Hudson said.

Part of Fullers’ review would consider the first aid training of those on its ships. Currently it had 100 ship staff with not all first-aid trained.

Fullers felt its staff responded well to the accident, but Hudson conceded some of the passengers contacted said there was not enough first aid assistance.

Maritime New Zealand is calling for any-body who witnessed, or was aboard the Fullers Ferry that crashed on February 17, to provide information for its investigation.

The Transport Accident Investigation Com-mission (TAIC) is leading the investigation into safety issues, while Maritime New Zealand is investigating from a regulatory perspective. Maritime New Zealand confirmed its investiga-tion will look at the full operating history of the vessel; this will include any incidents, accidents or near-misses, whether reported or not.

The TAIC investigation is being conducted by two investigators and is likely to take a year.

Unsecured seating an accident waiting to happen

What a debacle. The Kea incident creates questions.

If you were surprised at the lack of emer-gency response when the Fullers ferry lost control and hit the old Victoria wharf pile, you are not alone.

The description of debacle is not an exa-geration as passengers couldn’t get off the ferry and the wharf for the lack of crowd control by AT-contracted security guards. Surely that’s what they are there for.

The emergency services turned up

promptly but why as many as 12 police cars arrived beggars belief.

Ambulances and paramedics were quick although there were no signs of anyone tak-ing control of the scene in a timely manner.

Why weren’t Fullers crew and staff trained to act for such an incident?

Does AT employ the right people to take charge in a crisis?

Have we actually forgotten all we have learned on keeping our people safe?

Don’t even suggest an enquiry. There are regulations and rules galore but we do need common sense to prevail and that means preparing for the worst but hoping to never use the skills required.

With regard to the Kea crash, I’ve said for years that the fact that the passenger seating is not bolted down on the Kea (and in fact on many of Fullers’ other ferries) is an accident waiting to happen. If the Kea ever started to sink or significantly tilt for whatever reason, passengers would inevitably end up pinned un-

der a pile of heavy seating, making a potential tragedy much more likely. In the case of this recent crash, the movement of unsecured seat-ing under the sudden impact has certainly exac-erbated the situation. I’m frankly surprised that such an arrangement passes safety regulations.Colin Jackson

We used to live in Devonport, and came over to have a look at the new library. Some aspects of it are very pleasant, but there were some big flaws. For example the first thing you hear as you walk in, or linger in the entrance area, is the sound of the toilets being flushed and the very loud screech of the door leading to the toilets opening and closing. These sounds will also be very dominant if the area closed off by the (hideous) $100k curtain is being used at night. Then there are only two toilets and when we were there there were about 10 people, including children, wanting to use them. When you do get in to the toilet area, you discover that only one of them has a door that closes. The door to the disabled-use toilet cannot be closed as the floor is too high at the end of where the door slides to!! Should this happen in an $8million building? I would have thought toilets so dominant in the entrance are very bad feng shui.

The large circular window is very nice, but is an accident waiting to hap-pen, because there should have been a flat area underneath it, not steps for kids to fall onto and injure themselves.

I also noticed an old bloke getting upset about where to return his books. The hole does not even have a simple sign saying ‘returns’. Rates money well spent?

Fantastic new library, shame about the long-winded, boring opening.

I attended the opening of the Devonport Library on Thursday, mainly because I was part of the Community Choir, but also because I think it is a wonderful asset to Devonport. I love the design and find the inside has such a lovely feel about it. Shame the opening didn’t live up to the same expectations.

I thought this was a local community driven project. Why did we therefore not have the opening KapaHaka done by our lo-cal schools? I know for a fact that both Bel-mont Intermediate and Takapuna Grammar or one of the local primary schools all have outstanding groups. I’m sure they would have loved to have attended the opening of the library on behalf of our community.

As the speeches dragged on, I think it was forgotten what we were there for. It

was not meant to be a pat on the back for those involved, it was a celebration of what had been achieved. Everyone was thanked except the ratepayers, who actually funded the development.

As the temperature increased and peo-ple’s interest decreased, the event became just another boring, long-winded commu-nity council event.

I think we all know that there were a lot of sceptical people in the community, in regards to this new library development, me included, but here was one of the first opportunities to showcase what this new building had to offer.

With the completion of the project, the wonderful design and layout, I feel it was just a shame that the opening event still seemed so old fashioned, a bit like the old library.Michelle Millington

$300,000 to build – $300,000 to fixThe $300,000 price tag to fix the leaky

façade of The Rose Centre in Belmont is the same amount it cost North Shore City Council to build the facility in 1992.

The Rose Centre has “major leaking is-sues and needs to be completely re-clad to be watertight,” Auckland Council officer Peter Loud told the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

Currently, $262,500 of the board’s Com-munity Facilities capital budget has been tagged for the project. “But we expect the figure to go up a bit and be closer to $300,000,” he said.

In 1992, North Shore City Council put $300,000 towards the centre build. Lotter-ies contributed $183,000 and ASB Bank another $100,000.

The Rose Centre is the home of Com-pany Theatre, serves as a community facility, offers a range of activities and runs a community day care centre for 21 preschoolers.

Other community facility work planned by the council includes the installation of LED lighting at the Depot Artspace ($40,000) and a roof replacement at the Devonport Community House ($32,700).

ham Henry will give expert advice to Taka-puna Grammar rugby players next week.

Takapuna Grammar (TGS) sides will play two matches against visting Shawnigan Lakes School, one of Canada’s premier rugby schools, at TGS on March 9.

Henry has agreed to attend the afternoon through his role with The Rugby Site., an

online coaching and training resource.Sir Graham, will arrive before the Acad-

emy game and will watch both matches. Fol-lowing the 1st XV match he will complete an analysis of the games and host a question and answer session.

A school haka will take place at 3pm be-fore the first game. The second game kicks off at 4.15pm.

Devonport Scouts are about to be hit with council water charges – for the first time since 1946 when they moved to their current site.

They are just one of a number of community groups being hit with charges as the local author-ity makes all community groups on council land pay for water.

Devonport Scouts and Devonport Lions Club have both received letters from council property lease advisor Bridget Lee Martin, informing them that in accordance with their lease they will be charged for water and wastewater. The charge is also being backdated four years to November 2010, when Watercare Services Limited took over the Auckland region’s water and wastewater supply.

The Scouts den and the Lions clubhouse are located next to each other on council land along Allenby Ave and are hooked up to the same water meter.

Scout leader Christopher Jones said: “The

Scouts have been here since 1946 and we have never been charged for any water or wastewater we use for our kitchen, toilet and the occasional water play outside until now.”

Jones says he won’t pay the retroactive bill. “We share the meter with the Lions and there is no way to say who used what. I don’t think council can legally charge us because we don’t have our own meter,” he says.

“I have no objection to paying for our water from now on, if that is what we have to do, but council will first have to install a separate meter for us,” says Jones.

Devonport Lions President Bruce Wetherall says it was a challenge to locate the clubs’ shared meter. “It was well hidden and muddy and pretty obvious that no one had looked at it for years,” he says.

Wetherall reckons it is impossible for council to now determine the meter reading on No-vember 1, 2010 in order to know how much to

charge for the past four years.The Depot Artspace and Devonport Com-

munity House have also been told their water bills will go up in the future as well.

A different council property lease advisor advised them they will be charged like “all non-domestic water/wastewater users” in the future.

The Depot’s Lynn Lawton said under North Shore City Council, community organisations did not have to pay for wastewater because those charges were part of business or residential rates. But according to the council letter, community organisations will be treated just like a business in the future.

Council hits community groups with water bills

Blowing It, a comedy written by ex-Devonport resident Stephen Sinclair together with Stephen Papps, will have a short season at the Kerr St Artspace this month. The comedy about an undercover cop who goes off the rails in the Queens Arms pub in Panmure, was called “a rip-roaring comedy with broad commercial appeal” by The Listener in 1999.

Joy Mace is not great at sitting still. As a young mother in the 1970s, she juggled raising chil-dren with night shifts as a nurse and midwife. As a military wife, she moved 23 times in 30 years. At age 74, she now runs a popular B&B and rollerblades around Devonport to stay fit. She spoke to Maire Vieth.

Joy Mace took up rollerblading in her early 50s, when she commuted from Devonport to Greenlane hospital in her nurse’s uniform.

“I took the 6.30 am ferry across but the bus stopped at Ranfurly Rd and I needed to get to the hospital quickly from there. It wasn’t hard to learn. I went along to the skating rink in Glenfield two or three times and then I could do it,” she says.

Mace picked up rollerblading again as a grandmother and now wears protective roller-blade and ice hockey gear. ”My grandson For-rest was getting a bit fast on his skateboard, so I revisited my rollerblades to zoom along with him. I occasionally take him to the skatepark where we are quite a pair. It keeps me fit and is good for my balance,” she says.

Joy grew up as the oldest of seven on a Waikato dairy farm in Komakorau. “We lived in a very basic house and had to help with the hay-making and things like that,” says Mace. There were fun times too. “My parents took us to the Hamilton roller skating rink and we had swimming lessons at the pool,” she says.

The swimming lessons turned Joy into a keen sea swimmer. Because she wanted to be close to the sea, she trained as a nurse at Gis-borne Hospital. In 1963, as a registered general and obstetric nurse, she shifted to Dunedin, enrolling part time at Otago University while

working night shifts at Dunedin’s obstetrics hospital. She also trained as a midwife and became registered in 1964.

She joined the Dunedin Family Planning Association. “On my first day as a young public health nurse, my boss said if any women ask about birth control I wasn’t to tell them anything and refer them to their doctors. Virtually all the Dunedin GPs were strongly practising Roman Catholics. So I joined the Family Planning Association because I felt there was a need,” she says.

She also joined the Territorial Forces, at-tended camps and trained with the Otago University Medical Corps, a move which was to change her life. “I was the only woman and was required to sit in the front with the other commissioned officers. My future husband saluted me on arrival,” she says.

Howard Mace was a first lieutenant, study-ing for a Bachelor of Science at Otago. They married after Howard’s final exams in 1966 and Howard soon embarked on his long-time career as a military dentist. The Maces had two children, Bevan and Tania, and started a long series of military postings. “We lived in 23 houses in 30 years and it took me until 1982 to complete my university degree in nursing,” she says.

ever Howard was posted. “They seemed to need a midwife everywhere. As soon as I had weaned Bevan, they were desperate for a mid-wife in the Palmerston North Obstetrics Unit, so I ended up sharing the job with another midwife. I worked night shifts while Howard looked after the children,” she says. She did the same at the airforce base in Woodbourne, where she worked as a relief night midwife at Blenheim hospital.

In 1969, Howard was posted to London to do a Masters in Dentistry at University College London. Joy signed up with a nursing agency and found occasional jobs around London.

In 1971, she nursed New Zealand bass-baritone opera singer Inia Te Wiata while he was suffering with pancreatic cancer. “I am an opera fan and went to see him at the Royal Opera House. There was a chalked notice in the foyer saying he was indisposed . Never did I dream that the next day the nursing agency would ring and ask me to be his special nurse at Middlesex,” she says.

“I also looked after the writer A.P. Herbert in his house, and once after a sick baby at St Thomas Hospital. I will never forget seeing the sun rise over the Houses of Parliament that morning,” she says.

to moving there. Ruapehu was erupting at the time. We stayed for two years and seven days and a few hours,” Mace remembers exactly.

Joy’s skills were again in high demand. “They didn’t seem all that interested in How-ard’s new degree but on our second day in Waiouru, while I was trying to unpack with two youngsters running around, a hospital board member knocked on the door and said the [now demolished] Raetihi hospital would have to close down if they could not find a midwife. He said he did not care how little I worked as long as I was on his staff,” she says.

The Mace family lived in a house next to the Army’s cottage hospital and Mace was happy to help out there as well. “I could just get up in my bathrobe and look after my woman in labour or the staff could come and wake me when there was any concern,” she says.

“I was a seasoned military wife by then, so when we were transferred to Papakura next, Howard drove our Mini with the pot plants and the children and I took the night train. I made them school lunches before we left. When we arrived in Pakapura, the kids and I had breakfast at a hotel and then went straight to school and enrolled,” she says.

In 1975, Howard was posted to set up a periodontal programme at the Naval Dental Institute in Jakarta, Indonesia. “It was a diffi-cult post. We and a geologist were the first two New Zealand families sent there. The geolo-gist lasted six weeks but we stuck it out for the full two-year term, even though the children counted the days from 235 to go,” she says.

Jakarta was rife with corruption, says Mace. “Our house pack sat on the wharf for three months in the pouring rain while we had only our airline luggage because Norman Kirk, our prime minister at the time, refused to pay bribes,” she says.

Joy had to learn to speak Bahasa Indonesia to be able to communicate in her daily life. “You had to have a house full of servants, otherwise you would be robbed, and during the election we made sure we stayed away from the windows,” she says.

Despite the servants, life was rough. “There was a cess pit right through the wall and it smelt most foul. We had a tank stand for water that was six feet from our septic tank, so every

week I scrubbed and cleaned it out,” she says.Back in Papakura in 1977, Howard’s

military career kept moving ahead, while Joy continued working as a nurse and midwife and the children went to university.

During the 1980s, Howard was appointed Honorary Dental Surgeon to the Governor General. “We had a role in greeting and fare-welling dignitaries when the Governor Gen-eral was not able. I was a public health nurse when we went to greet the King of Tonga, so I was in my hat and gloves at the airport and then had to change into my nurse outfit and head to Otara, which was our poorest suburb, for my day job,” she says.

In 1985, Howard took clinical leave and both he and Joy enrolled in a postgraduate diploma in community health in Wellington. “We were the first married couple to do that,” she says.

Joy Mace has also been a hands-on renova-tor over the years. “I am very much of a DIYer but part of that was forced on me. We bought a house in Wellington and the day the builders started, Howard was posted to Devonport,” she says. Joy stayed behind and managed the work as the head contractor.

She took on a second house in Remuera in the late 1980s. “It was the worst house on the best street. It was a major do-up but when we sold it we could buy a place on Calliope Road and put down deposits on two houses in Grey Lynn for our children,” she says.

Their current house was also a labour of love. It began with an empty piece of water-front land on the corner of Queens Parade and Anne Street, where a house had burned down in 1993.

“We hired Jeremy Salmond to come up with a heritage design and moved in at lock-up stage in 1995. Howard and I painted the outside and then I did the finishing plaster and painting inside. We worked like maniacs but it was worth it,” she says. Given the prominence of the section, the building’s progress was watched with interest by many Devonport people. They started their B&B Admiral’s Landing around 2000.

Tragedy struck the family in 2005. Bevan’s wife Nicole Kayrouz, a local girl who had run a flower barrow on Clarence Street, was killed.

The young couple had a 22-month-old son, Forrest. “Nicole was crossing Ponsonby Rd on a Tuesday morning and stood on the refuge in the middle of the road. Two young lads were drag racing at the traffic lights, overtook a truck and hit her. It left young Forrest without a mother,” says Joy.

The Maces closed their B&B to look after Forrest. “A couple of years later, we started up again slowly and now it has become quite busy,” says Mace, who has no intention of slowing down. “I have longevity on both sides of my family. My mother was still milking the cows at 93,” she says.

It would be no surprise to see Joy on her rollerblades in 20 years’ time.

Devonport kids star in rock video

Devonport’s image as a safe paradise for kids is challenged in local filmmaker Karl Lear’s portrayal, his latest music video for Christchurch rock duo Cairo Knife Fight.

The video for their latest song No Longer Silent features 22 local children roaming the streets and parks on their own – a common sight in Devonport. Then one of them finds a brown paper bag with a gun in it.

Lear has worked with the globally emerg-ing New Zealand rock band before, on videos that occasionally have high shock value.

“This time though, they said they wanted something completely different. I thought of innocent children, naivety, beauty and

freedom. And the only place I could think of where kids can play outside and be totally free was Devonport,” says Lear.

The video begins with Devonport kids as we know them: on swings, in bare feet, do-ing cartwheels along Summer St, climbing trees, dressing up as pirates, running along the beach. They do somersaults down North Head, slide on cardboard on Mt Victoria. They find a rock and goof around. Slowly things get darker. A boy finds a rock, another boy a discarded gun. The kids start play fight-ing and pretend to shoot each other. Then the rock gets thrown.

Lear says working with children running

around outside pushed his boundaries as well. “I am much more used to shooting in a studio. We kept it simple, had two cameras running all the time, shot and shot and didn’t really tell them what to do very much,” he says.

He started byfilming his nine-year-old son Oscar. “Just because I could and it was easy. Then his friend Rohan Sherlock came along, and then a few more friends of my kids and a few more kids of my friends,” he says.

The band had recently returned from playing with The Foo Fighters in the US and wanted a twist at the end of the video that made a statement about kids and guns, says Lear.

Devonport was to the fore of last week’s protest against Ports of Auckland’s proposed 90-metre extension of Bledisloe Wharf. About 30 of the 150 protesters were locals. Many arrived at the waterfront by ferry to vent their concerns.

Julie Stout, partner David Mitchell and his son Julian Mitchell are local architects and were the key organisers of the protest.

Devonport Heritage representatives Margot McRae and Trish Deans carried protest signs across on the ferry, with the help of Bernice Beachman, Avril Cowie and Prue Raos.

North Shore ward Auckland councillor Chris Darby told the crowd that Aucklanders should not accept the proposed port expansion as fin-ished business. Others at the protest included Devonport-Takapuna Local Board members Mike Cohen, Joe Bergin and Grant Gillon, as well as Grey Power representative Bill Rayner and former Devonport Community Board chair Paddy Stafford-Bush, who said the port plans were “another horror story like Bayswater Ma-rina,” where council changed the development on the land from non-complying last year.

Architects Wayne Lees, Mike Austin and Hannah Manning-Scott were there, as were architectural historian Julia Gatley and urban planner Joel Cayford.

Other locals included Mike Eaglesome, Diana and William Atkinson, and photographer Stephen Perry.

Even the media had Devonport connections. Local Nicole Bremner reported on the protest for TV1.

• A Darby-led motion to council that asked for reconsideration of Port’s ability to extend into the harbour was lost the next day.

More than 1,000 locals signed a petition asking to enshrine a ban in council’s Long Term Plan on the use of herbicides on Devonport’s kerbs, parks and sports fields. Devonport has a 23-year history of local non-chemical weed management.

Devonport Toxins Action Group spokesperson Sharon Byron-McKay presented the petition to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, saying it was truly grass-roots.

“Rather than go through social media channels, we went door to door and talked to each person face to face,” she said.

“We believe it is a robust petition in every respect that reflects the strength and true feeling of our community on this issue,” she said.

“We have the support of some high-profile locals in our community, such as Kevin Ireland and Tim Finn, families that have lived in Devonport for generations, and of many medical professionals and lawyers.” Byron-McKay said she was concerned council was proposing changes “to make greater use of sprays in all parks, instead of continuing with our mechanical hot water means for maintaining grass edges.”

No matter how hard council tried to inform residents of intentions to spray, it was impossible to reach eve-ryone and predict the exact timing and weather condi-tions, she said. Byron-McKay said herbicides can make parks potentially unsafe by contaminating grass edging, paths and playground equipment, “where unsuspecting mothers and young children may happen across and be exposed to spray drift.”

The board forwarded the petition as a submission on Auckland Council’s Long-Term Plan..

The Devonport Kids Summer Athletics series is now being attended by more than 50 children, despite having to find a new venue.

Devonport Community Coordinator Maria Teape says she was initially stumped when council told her she had to find an alternative venue for the annual athletics series because the rugby fields were being reseeded and were out of commission this February.

However the cricket grounds on Devonport Domain across the road were available but lacked a long-jump pitch.

Carolyn Pomeroy, who runs the event, substituted a running, jumping and throw-ing agility combination, perfect for primary and intermediate school children.

Teape said: “We had about 45 athletes there on the first Tuesday and almost 60 on the second. The event seems to appeal to younger children more, but we want the older ones to know that they are very welcome as well.”

Valentine’s DayLove was in the air on Friday the 13th

and Justin Timberlake’s romantic hit ‘500 Hundred Miles’ could be heard throughout the school grounds. A fun, enthusiastic and dashingly good-looking group of prefects got down on their knees while serenading to particularly lucky and, particularly red-faced, students, who were chosen at random. Head Boy Andy Song and his team not only experienced a full day of vocal exercising but were also busy delivering love notes and sweetheart messages throughout classes.

As Valentine’s Day itself was on a Saturday this year, the students used the week be-forehand to gather up Valentine messages, sent from one student to another. An op-tion was given to anyone sending a romantic message to have a cupcake and/or Hershey’s Kiss delivered along with it, for that extra loving touch. Faces tensed and breaths were cut short as groups of fairy-winged prefects walked into classrooms, each student wait-ing to see for whom they had brought mes-sages of secret admiration. Names were read

out and messages delivered to blushing fac-es with pleased and slightly sheepish smiles. A photo booth was also set up for students wanting to take photos with friends or Val-entine dates. Roses were used as optional props along with heart-shaped streamers dangling from the backdrop, setting an en-chanting scene.

The library experienced their share of Valentines, decorating the main room with streamers and quirky, fun posters, and they set up a series of ‘love challenges’; a variety of activities, including identifying pictures of famous couples from the movies.

It’s been a jam-packed start to the term at school, with both athletics and swimming sports done and dusted. On February 10th, the students took to the water in one of the best house and sporting events of the year.

Despite the day starting out overcast and bleak, the sun came out, and the day went off without a hitch. In the morning were the com-petitive races. Notable swimmers included Arushni Naicker, who broke a school record in Intermediate Girls three-lengths freestyle with her time of 66.80 seconds (previous time 67.00 seconds, set in 2005). Arushni also gained seven firsts and two seconds in her nine events.

Other swimmers who did well were Edward Lotawa (five firsts, one second and two thirds), Michael Worsfold (five firsts and two seconds), Zane Kelbrick (four firsts, one second and three thirds) and Hannah Williams (six firsts and two seconds).

In the house points race, Tokomaru took home the win this time, with Aotea in second, Tainui in third and Arawa in fourth. It was a wonder-ful event; the enthusiasm shown by all students,

along with the organisation of the prefects and the house leaders made it another amazing day.

Athletics was held a week later, and was another hot and busy day. The field was a blur

of green, red, yellow and blue as students ran around the various events. Seventy-six students qualified for NHSS this year, which is a very im-pressive result for our athletes. In the house

points, Arawa came in first, with Tokomaru in second, Aotea in third, and Tainui in fourth. With loud music, prefects and house leaders alike in a near constant state of either dancing wildly, start-

ing chant-offs or desperately trying to find relay racers, amidst giraffes and lions running about, with lollies being thrown left, right and centre, and the ever-present smell of the prefect sau-

sage sizzle, athletics and swimming sports always prove to be crazy fun-filled events.

Hands shot into the air and shouts ech-oed around the room as the level 2 busi-ness students of Takapuna Grammar strove to be chosen to answer the various ques-tions asked by the general manager at The Warehouse’s head office. After listening and watching a presentation focused on the Warehouse business and The Warehouse Group, the various tables of students around the room racked through their memories of all the previous slideshows and facts in the hope of picking the right answer and receiv-ing much sought-after chocolate.

The day up to that point had been packed with information, knowledge and experi-ence from their distinct encounters with The Warehouse Group’s C.E.O Mark Powell and an insight into the core purpose of The Warehouse Group. There was still more to come, in the form of the founder, Sir Ste-phen Tindall.

Sir Stephen’s presentation itself was an inspiring anecdote; a story full of generos-ity, morals and true entrepreneurship. He told the students about his time growing

up, his motivation and principles and gave his audience a whole new insight into his background and persona that Google could never have provided. When it came to his story of starting The Warehouse back in 1982, the students were given a realistic glimpse of an entrepreneur’s true qualities and skill set. Taking risks, self-confidence, seizing opportunities and belief had, up to that point, been under-estimated as simple feats, as Mr Tindall told everyone of every-thing he had had to do and give up in order to seize the potential he saw in his vision of The Warehouse. It was an incredibly ground-ing experience to learn of all of his achieve-ments while also gaining an understanding of his humble and noble intentions.

With just over an hour left until the school bus arrived, Stephen Tindall’s motivating rendition came to an end, leaving the stu-dents to be split into two groups that were to embark on a guided tour around the various departments. The staff were bubbly, fun, knowledgeable and generous, giving the best group of students a chocolate bar.

Some even shared their personal stories of how they worked their way up through the ranks from working at a checkout, an en-lightening touch for young adults to hear.

All students had a fun, yet enlightening and fruitful day. Though tired after experi-encing the true might of a CEO, the heart-ening story of a knighted entrepreneur, the countless battles for chocolate and the many respectable figures, each have a new perspective of The Warehouse and its team.

Valentine’s DayLove was in the air on Friday the 13th

and Justin Timberlake’s romantic hit ‘500 Hundred Miles’ could be heard throughout the school grounds. A fun, enthusiastic and dashingly good-looking group of prefects got down on their knees while serenading to particularly lucky and, particularly red-faced, students, who were chosen at random. Head Boy Andy Song and his team not only experienced a full day of vocal exercising but were also busy delivering love notes and sweetheart messages throughout classes.

As Valentine’s Day itself was on a Saturday this year, the students used the week be-forehand to gather up Valentine messages, sent from one student to another. An op-tion was given to anyone sending a romantic message to have a cupcake and/or Hershey’s Kiss delivered along with it, for that extra loving touch. Faces tensed and breaths were cut short as groups of fairy-winged prefects walked into classrooms, each student wait-ing to see for whom they had brought mes-sages of secret admiration. Names were read

out and messages delivered to blushing fac-es with pleased and slightly sheepish smiles. A photo booth was also set up for students wanting to take photos with friends or Val-entine dates. Roses were used as optional props along with heart-shaped streamers dangling from the backdrop, setting an en-chanting scene.

The library experienced their share of Valentines, decorating the main room with streamers and quirky, fun posters, and they set up a series of ‘love challenges’; a variety of activities, including identifying pictures of famous couples from the movies.

It’s been a jam-packed start to the term at school, with both athletics and swimming sports done and dusted. On February 10th, the students took to the water in one of the best house and sporting events of the year.

Despite the day starting out overcast and bleak, the sun came out, and the day went off without a hitch. In the morning were the com-petitive races. Notable swimmers included Arushni Naicker, who broke a school record in Intermediate Girls three-lengths freestyle with her time of 66.80 seconds (previous time 67.00 seconds, set in 2005). Arushni also gained seven firsts and two seconds in her nine events.

Other swimmers who did well were Edward Lotawa (five firsts, one second and two thirds), Michael Worsfold (five firsts and two seconds), Zane Kelbrick (four firsts, one second and three thirds) and Hannah Williams (six firsts and two seconds).

In the house points race, Tokomaru took home the win this time, with Aotea in second, Tainui in third and Arawa in fourth. It was a wonder-ful event; the enthusiasm shown by all students,

along with the organisation of the prefects and the house leaders made it another amazing day.

Athletics was held a week later, and was another hot and busy day. The field was a blur

of green, red, yellow and blue as students ran around the various events. Seventy-six students qualified for NHSS this year, which is a very im-pressive result for our athletes. In the house

points, Arawa came in first, with Tokomaru in second, Aotea in third, and Tainui in fourth. With loud music, prefects and house leaders alike in a near constant state of either dancing wildly, start-

ing chant-offs or desperately trying to find relay racers, amidst giraffes and lions running about, with lollies being thrown left, right and centre, and the ever-present smell of the prefect sau-

sage sizzle, athletics and swimming sports always prove to be crazy fun-filled events.

Two hundred people hunted for treasure at Fort Takapuna last Sunday. Kids and parents alike enjoyed exploring the historic fort, which opened up in recognition of the 100-year anniversary of the Gallipoli Landing and to ackowledge the 2600 members of the Maori Poineer Battalion who had been based at the Fort.

Swimming sisters haul in the medals Bernie and Gabrielle Doyle are raking in

the medals this summer. In January, Bernie (14) won her age-

group division at the Capital Classic in Wellington. She completed the 3.3km swim via Oriental Bay in 48.43 minutes and was the 14th woman across the line.

Bernie had already come third in her age group at Auckland’s 2.9km Harbour Crossing in December and second at the 3.3km Bay of Islands Classic from Russell to Paihia in November.

Her sister Gabrielle (8) is not far behind in the medal haul. She won the 200m race among eight-year-olds in Paihia, and came second in Wellington.

All-round athletes, the two sisters like to swim for fitness, and prefer swimming in the ocean to laps in the pool.

It is Gabrielle’s first year of sea swim-ming, but Bernie completed the Harbour Crossing two years ago when, at age 12, she came second in the 14-year-old category. “She needed special permission to be al-lowed in because she was so young,” says mum Helen.

The youngest two in a family of seven, the Doyle sisters love sports. Gabrielle plays netball, does surf life saving and swims both in the sea and with Takapuna’s North Shore Swimming Club.

Bernie is a member of the New Zealand Girls Youth Water Polo team. Her priority is to get selected to go with the team to Hungary later in the year and sea swim-

ming helps her fitness, she says. “I used to swim competitively for North Shore, play volleyball and touch but I ran out of time,” she says.

Bernie’s sporting prowess has already been recognised nationally when she was named the ASICS Junior Elite Athlete of the Year in 2012, for outstanding sporting achievements among intermediate-aged children.

Still an all-rounder, she now focuses on water polo, surf life saving, netball, athlet-ics and, of course, sea swimming, she says.

When she was younger, Bernie was moti-vated to keep up with her older sister Sarah (17), just like Gabrielle is now by Bernie. “She wants to get right into the action,” says Helen.

It wasn’t easy at first. “When she came out after her first time at the Takapuna Beach Series, Gabrielle said ‘I am never doing that again,’ but she soon changed her mind,” says Helen.

Even though she says the water in Wel-lington was “freezing,” Gabrielle enjoyed the sea. “There were jellyfish everywhere and I think I saw starfish and I thought I saw a tiny octopus,” she says.

The Hibiscus and Bays, Upper Harbour, Kaipātiki and Devonport-Takapuna local boards have funding available from the following schemes in round two of the 2014/2015 funding year to support not-for-profit community groups and organisations with grants for projects and activities:

• Local Board Community Grants. Applications must be consistent with the priorities as set out in the relevant local board’s plan

• Strengthening Communities Fund (North Shore).

Applications open on 1 February 2015 and close on 15 March 2015 for projects that start after 1 July 2015.

Fundraising $60,000 for a 50-metre-long fitness trail for Belmont Primary School was the aim of its fair and Battle of the Schools event, held last Sunday.

Principal Bruce Cunningham said: “On current adventure playground equipment, kids

tend to stay on the parts they like the best, say the monkey bars or the slide. With this one, you will have to start at one end and go through a number of different activities to get out at the other end.”

The new fitness trail will include two sets of

stepping logs, hurdles, a crawl net, scale walls, and monkey bars, but no slide.

Being fit is good for learning, Cunningham says. “An active body makes an active mind, plus when kids burn off energy before class, it helps them be less fidgety when they sit down.”
