Weekly Reflection

As soon as I pull out my breviary in the morning my mind often starts bouncing from one thought to another, rarely having anything to do with prayer. I think of the things I have to get done. I ponder the comment someone made to me or one I made that I regret. I think about a show I watched the night before. I wonder if my beloved Georgia Bulldogs can maintain the great season they are having. Can they win out and beat Alabama for the SEC Championship?

Oh yes, I’m supposed to be praying.

Being attentive in prayer is a challenge for a lot of us, but it was also a challenge for the saints. St. Teresa of Avila said this: “I was more anxious for the hour of prayer to be over than I was to remain there. I don’t know what heavy penance I would not have gladly undertaken rather than practice prayer….the intellect is so wild that it doesn’t seem to be anything else than a frantic madman no one can tie down….All the trials we endure cannot be compared to these interior battles…”

In the modern age, this can be an even more difficult circumstance as we live in a noisy world from which there seems no escape: text messages, social media notifications, constant breaking news alerts, and unread email overload. Along with this digital cacophony, it is difficult to escape the engines of work that surround us: sirens, traffic, airplanes, construction machinery. Silence, internally and externally, is more difficult to find and the necessity of it is, ironically, screaming at us. One cardinal refers to this modern phenomenon as ‘the dictatorship of noise’.

But how do we maintain focus and keep from being distracted in prayer? The first and obvious answer is to step away from electronics. But if your mind continues to wander just keep putting it back on track and keep at it. And remember these comforting words of Thomas Merton: “[I]t is the will to pray that is the essence of prayer, and the desire to find God, to see Him and love Him is the one thing that matters.”

RESURRECTION CATHOLIC CHURCH’S 12th Annual Fair Trade sale is Sunday, November 5 from 12:00—4:00pm.

Each purchase helps families in both the United States and less developed countries work their way out of poverty. Choose from an abundance of hand crafted items for yourself, your home or as gifts. Buying a scarf, basket, jew-elry, pottery, household items, or gift allows the artisans who create them to put more nutritious food on the table, send their children to school and have access to medical care. If you choose to buy and use fair trade items, your purchases will reflect your faith and your stand for justice. You will probably also find a little gift for yourself, guilt free.

Please join us, bring a friend and support this effort. Resurrection Catholic Church is located at 15353 Moneta Rd., Moneta, VA., north of Hales Ford Bridge. For more information, please contact Kathy Lietz at 721-3330.
