One of the gifts of Catholicism is the great diversity of expressions of the one faith we share. From its beginnings, Christianity has been a Church on the move, spreading from the Middle East and Africa to all parts of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Now, more than ever, the Church is global. As the Church has spread throughout the world, we have come to express a common faith within a variety of cultures and languages. “Christian life is nourished by various forms of popular piety, rooted in the different cultures” (CCC 1679). These cultural expressions used in the liturgy bring a variety of local traditions that cele- brate local saints and holy days in ways that are unique to the culture of the people who celebrate them. We as a Church celebrate unity even in our diversity. Within the Catholic Church, there are a variety of Rites, or expressions of the Catholic faith. In the United States most Catholics belong to the Roman, or Latin, Rite. However, other expressions of the Catholic faith, the Eastern Churches, include the Byzantine Rite, the Maronite Rite, and others. Together with these, we form a single communion of faith, expressed in the Nicene Creed, the Seven Sac- raments, and union with the bishops and the pope. In Chapter 23 the children learned that the Church respects all people of every faith and is working toward unity among all Christians. In this chapter, the children will learn that Catholics all over the world share the same faith and celebrate that faith in different ways.

These cultural expressions used in the liturgy bring a variety of local traditions that cele-brate local saints and holy days in ways that are unique to the culture of the people who celebrate

them.

Together with these, we form a single communion of faith, expressed in the Nicene Creed, the Seven Sac-raments, and union with the bishops and the pope.

In Chapter 23 the children learned that the Church respects all people of every faith and is working toward unity among all Christians. In this chapter, the children will learn that Catholics all over the world share the same faith and celebrate that faith in different ways.

What can I do to appreciate the variety of

expressions of the Catholic faith?

What expressions of faith are part

of my family tradition?
