CenotesThe Yucatan peninsula is covered inlimestone sinkholes, called Cenotes.These natural caves and wells are filledwith crystal clear water, sometimes withfish and often with lush vegetation andvines hanging down the sides. Dzipnut,Ek Balam, Dos Ojos and others, weresacred places in the Mayan tradition,some had human sacrifices; the cool,clear blue water, the sunlight pouring infrom above have a magical effect, makingthem a must for you to see. Many havebeen developed for visitors, with stairsdown to the water to allow swimming.The most visited is Ik-Kil near Chichen-Itza with tourists coming on full day toursfrom the coast but many are very quiet,isolated and even, mysterious.
