1.2. INSTALLATION

The 650 can be used as a batching unit or it can be connected to a processor that has a pump outlet.

BATCHING

There is no hookup required between the processor and the 650 when a batching process is used. The wastesolution must be manually taken out of the processor and poured into the 650 tank. When the tank gets filled up tothe ’level Line’ (+/-1/2"), desilver the solution per Section 1.6.

1 Screw the plugs (provided) into the tank fittings using thread sealer.

PROCESSOR CONNECTION

1 Install a 90° elbow (P/N SD89-53) into each fitting using thread sealer. (See Diagram A-1)

2 Connect the processor hose to the inlet (top fitting) of the tank. Secure the processor hose to the fittingwith a clamp (P/N SD88-22). (See Diagram A-2)

3 Select the correct length of noncorrosive plastic tubing (P/N SM317-03) to lead from the outlet (bottomfitting) of the tank. Secure the tubing to the fitting with a clamp (P/N SD88-22). (See Diagram A-2)

4 For initial setup, allow the tank to fill up to the level line (+/- 1/2") before desilvering. Thereafter, let theunit operate as long as the processor is turned ON.

646 tailing a 650 (See Diagram B)

1 Install the hose adaptors into the 650 tank as described in Automatic Overflow method on previous page.

2 Connect the processor hose to the inlet of the 650 tank and the outlet of tank to the inlet of the 646 (tailing)tank. Note: The primay unit must be placed on a 2"-4" platform to allow downward flow.

3 For initial setup, allow the 650 tank to fill up to the level line and the 646 (tailing) tank half-way beforedesilvering. Thereafter, let both units operate as long as the processor is turned ON.

643 tailing a 650 (See Diagram C)1 Install the hose adaptors into the 650 tank as described in Automatic Overflow method on previous page.

2 Connect the processor hose to the inlet of the 650 tank and the outlet of tank to the inlet of the 643 (tailing)tank.

3 For initial setup, allow the 650 tank to fill up to the level line and the 643 (tailing) tank half-way beforedesilvering. Thereafter, let both units operate as long as the processor is turned ON.

1.3. OVERALL DESCRIPTION

The 650 consists of a silver recovery head and one tank. The tank is a six gallon tank which holdsapproximately five gallons of fix. The silver recovery head controls the recovery rate via the silver recoveryswitch, located in the front of the unit. The On/Off switch is located in the rear of the unit.

Once the silver recovery switch is set (per Section 1.6) there is no need for any further adjustment, that is, if thesame fix is always used.

The operating current is displayed in the front of the unit via a L.E.D. bar graph display. When all the L.E.D.s are on,the unit is desilvering at maximum (10 amps). When all the L.E.D.s are off, the unit has finished the desilver cycle.

IMPORTANT! Before operating the 650, it is very important that you thoroughly read and understand Section1.6 of this manual.

1.4. APPLYING POWER

The 650 operates from a standard 3-wire grounded 115VAC line source and the 650X from a 230VAC linesource. ALWAYS PLUG THE UNIT INTO A 3-WIRE RECEPTACLE!

CAUTION! Do not defeat the purpose of the 3rd wire ground by using a 2-prong cheater plug.A cheater plug could cause an electrical shock hazard.

Turn the unit ON by rocking the On/Off switch upward, to the ON position.

1.5. ESTIMATING SILVER CONTENT OF BATCH

Each unit is shipped with a sample booklet of Silver Estimating Test Papers. These test papers are used toestimate the silver content of the batch and to indicate if the batch has been completely recovered.

SILVER TEST PROCEDURE

1 Quickly dip a portion of the test paper intothe fix then flick off the excess fix.

2 Place the test paper onto a sheet of whitepaper and wait for five seconds.

3 Compare the test paper to the test chart.Compare with the nearest two adjacent colorpatches, then use the closest match.Comparing is best done in ordinaryincandescent light (not fluorescent).

1.6. SILVER SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT

The unit is shipped from the factory with the silver recovery switch set to MEDIUM, a condition that willprovide the maximum and most efficient silver recovery capacity from Black and White (X-Ray) film. The silverrecovery switch is only used to compensate for differences in fixes and room temperatures. The factory settingshould not be changed until the initial setup procedure, as described below has been completed.

Initial Setup Procedure:

1 Fill the 650 tank with silver laden solution, containing at least .1 oz/gal. of silver. The amount of silver canbe estimated per Section 1.5.

2 Apply power to the unit, and after 15 minutes check the current reading in the display. If the display shows10 amps (maximum) the unit is operating properly. If the display shows less than 10 amps, one of thefollowing could be the cause:

° Solution is not covering drum.

° The solution does not contain enough silver [recheck if fix contains at least .1oz/gal. of silver -SeeSection 1.5.]

° The solution is aerated or exhausted [add topping solution or use different solution.]

° The operating current has to be increased by switching to a higher setting [using silver recovery switch].Wait five minutes and recheck display for 10 amps. If no, switch to the highest setting. If the displaynever reaches 10 amps, refer to the Troubleshooting Chart in the General Maintenance Manual (availablefrom X-Rite P/N 643-505).

3 Once the display shows 10 amps, let the unit operate until the silver has been completely recovered. Thetime it takes for the silver to be recovered is dependent on the amount of silver in the batch. The 650recovers silver at the rate of 1.25 oz. per hour when the silver content is above .1 oz/gal., and at lower rateswhen the silver content is below .1 oz/gal. Additionally, the tank holds 5 gallons of solution. Therefore, ifyour solution contains .5 oz. of silver per gallon, it would take approximately 2.5 hours to completelydesilver a full tank of solution.

4 After the estimated recovery period, and you believe the silver to be completely recovered, check the silvercontent of the batch per Section 1.5. If the silver HAS NOT been completely recovered, run the unit anadditional amount of time until the silver is removed. Once the silver has been recovered, the display shouldturn off. If there is any display showing for more then one hour after silver has been recovered, and thedrum is turning dark and mushy, the silver recovery switch must be switched down.

7

Page 10: 650-500 650 Operation Manual En

1.7. OPERATING NOTES

• During normal operation the display should show 10 (maximum) amps when the solution contains .1oz/gal. or more of silver.

• During normal operation no LED’s (display) should be on after silver has been completely removed.

• As an end result, the recovered silver should be light to medium brown in color.

• If the recovered silver is soft, black, and mushy; the silver recovery switch should be adjusted down.

• Set the silver recovery switch upward if the silver is pure white when the silver is known to be at lowconcentration.

• When the 650 is used as a batching unit, set the silver recovery switch up to the setting that maximizesrecovery without creating mushy silver.

• Remember, adjust the silver recovery switch only one position at a time, then wait five minutes for aresult.

• Turn the unit OFF when not in use. When used as a flow-thru recovery system with a processor, bestrecovery occurs if the 650 is turned OFF when the processor is turned OFF.

1.8. REMOVING SILVER FROM DRUM

Silver should be removed from the drum approximately once a month. Never let the silver build up to more thanhalf the distance between the anode and the drum (approximately 1/8 - 1/4" thick.)

Unplug power cord from wall receptacle!

1 Lift 650 head out of tank and place onflat surface.

2 Remove drum from head by looseningtwo 7/16" bolts on coupler.

3 Remove silver from drum by peelingsilver away from drum with putty knife. It is convenient to place the drum into alarge plastic bag during silver removal.

4 Install drum onto head by aligning flatareas of shaft with the bolts, then tightenbolts.
