President’s Report I am delighted to present the President’s Report for 2016 to the valued Members and supporters of the Box Hill Hawks Football Club. No, we did not win a Senior Premiership this year but the development of a new crop of young players was more than obvious to all with our magnificent Grand Final win in the Development League. I’m sure you will all agree that it was a fantastic win and all associated with the Club should be very proud of this achievement. Only two players in the Grand Final team had not played Senior football this year which bodes well for the future. Congratulations to Development Team Coach Matt Adolph, his assistants and all players who played in the Development Team for a job well done. We were fortunate to be able to field a very strong team on Grand Final day which meant that there were several unlucky players to miss out on Grand Final day. Everyone knows that a squad of thirty or more players is needed to win a Premiership and, although disappointed, not one of the players who missed playing in the Premiership team showed anything but support and enthusiasm for the group. That to me showed a lot of maturity and represented the true culture of this Club. I take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Senior Coach, Marco Bello. Marco has completed a successful three year stint where he guided the team to the V.F.L. Grand Final on two occasions. Marco will now become head of the Development Academy at the Hawthorn Football Club. Most would not be aware of how hard Marco worked in trying not only to develop players for the future but win premierships as well. Marco, on behalf of the Board and all supporters, I thank you for your efforts and wish you well for the future. Fortunately for your many friends at Box Hill your new role will still involve you being around the Club regularly. We welcome Chris Newman as the new Senior Coach for 2017. Chris played 268 A.F.L. matches in a career spanning 15 years at the top level and captained the Tigers for four seasons. Chris retired as a player in 2015 and worked at Hawthorn as a development coach in 2016. He has been appointed on a two year contract and will be a welcome addition to the Box Hill team. Chris, congratulations, and we all look forward to working with you over the next couple of years. I take this opportunity to thank all players and assistant coaches who worked so hard during the year. The Cub is so proud of each and every one of you for your dedication to the job and the professionalism that you showed during the season. I particularly acknowledge our Fitness Coach, Shaun Murphy, who puts in many hours of work to ensure our players have the fitness levels required at V.F.L. level. Also a big thank you to the wives, partners, girlfriends and families for supporting the players and coaching staff during the year. As I have mentioned many times, this Club prides itself on developing young players and I am certain that once again we have a number in our ranks that will play regular Senior football in years to come and may ultimately play in the A.F.L. I thank all of our on-field leaders; in particular our Captain David Mirra and Vice-Captain Sam Isles, who led the Club with enthusiasm and endeavour during the season. This year David was a deserving winner of the Club Champion trophy, passed the milestone of 100 Senior Games and qualified for Life Membership. Sam has retired from V.F.L. Football after 96 games with the Box Hill Hawks and a career total of 159 V.F.L. games. He has been a magnificent contributor to this Club and all his friends at Box Hill wish him well for the future. I congratulate all other trophy winners, in particular, Aaron Bond who won the Best and Fairest Award for the Development Team. I also take this opportunity also to thank all the Hawthorn listed players who played for us during the season. Your contribution to the Box Hill Hawks was fantastic; your attitude, enthusiasm and professional approach was always of the highest standard.

To the President of the Hawthorn Football Club, Richard Garvey, I am most appreciative for the active and positive interest that you, your Board and your C.E.O. Stuart Fox take in the growth and success of the Box Hill Hawks Football Club. Also thank you to the Hawthorn Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson and the entire Hawthorn Football Department for their encouragement throughout the year. In particular I thank Chris Fagan whose help and advice has assisted us for several seasons. We wish Chris well in his new role as Senior Coach of the Brisbane Lions. To the Club’s Administration; Chris Nanni, Bob Lyford and John Cavarra; I thank you all for your hard work and professional attitude. These gentlemen are responsible for implementing the Board’s policies and all have performed their duties in an excellent manner. I also make special mention of our Football Manager, Stewart Ward who works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the Football department. I particularly wish to acknowledge the contribution of Chris Nanni as our General Manager over the past two years; who has recently left the Club to take up a senior position at Hawthorn. Chris, you have been a fantastic contributor to Box Hill and the Board will miss your expertise and guidance into the future. Having said that, we welcome Daniel Napoli as our new General Manager. Daniel has a similar background to Chris, having worked at Hawthorn for a number of years in various roles. We welcome you Daniel and look forward to working closely with you in the coming years. I thank the Club’s many generous sponsors. The support we receive from the local business community is magnificent and our growing sponsorship portfolio is testament to this support. As I have mentioned on many occasions, without your continued help it would be impossible to run this Club as a professional and well resourced sporting organisation. Again I acknowledge the Club’s many volunteers for your time, effort and hard work. The Club would not be able to function without you, on behalf of the Board, I simply say a big “Thank You”. I would also like to thank the City of Whitehorse and its Councillors and Officers for their support during the year. Box Hill City Oval is still regarded as one the best grounds in the V.F.L. and the Box Hill Hawks are proud to represent the Municipality in this prestigious competition. A special mention must go to our Vice President’s Club and to the members of the Hawthorn Confreres who have supported the Club throughout the year. We really appreciate your contributions and enthusiasm during the year and look forward to each of you being part of the Club in 2017. The year past has been challenging at a strategic and competition level with another review of the V.F.L. conducted by the A.F.L. and A.F.L. Victoria. At one stage the scrapping of the Development League was a real possibility, however, the Presidents of a number of Clubs banded together to make the point that the Development League is an essential part of the player talent pathway that must be retained. I am happy to report that the Development League will continue in 2017 and hopefully well beyond. To John Ure thanks again for your contribution to this Club. Your efforts in supporting our cause year after year are nothing short of amazing and I thank you personally for all your advice and support this year. Finally to my fellow Directors; thank you all for your support and advice along the way. No Club can be successful without a clear Strategic Plan, disciplined budgetary measures and a clear vision of what it wants to achieve. The Board this year has again accepted these responsibilities without question and I thank you for your spirited contributions. Tony Pinwill President

General Manager’s Report The 2016 V.F.L. season kicked off in impressive style in the seniors with four wins from as many matches, including a rematch between last year’s preliminary finalists in Sandringham and eventual premiers Williamstown. Such a promising start would soon turn to heart ache after then losing 9 out of the next 10 games and eventually missing the finals for the first time since 2008. Injuries and some unlucky loses in some tight games ended up costing us a place in the top 8, on the other hand we managed to debut 15 players in our Senior side, many of which came from our Box Hill list from either Development football or the Eastern Ranges. The Development Team on the other hand had another dominant season, losing just three games and finishing three games clear plus a very large percentage on top of the ladder after the home and away season. The dominance continued in the Development League Finals series; a 92-point win in our Semi-Final granting the boys a week off before yet another Grand Final appearance. The Grand Final was played against Casey Scorpions at North Port Oval which turned out to be another comfortable win against the Casey Scorpions. Box Hill Hawks 26.16(172) defeated Casey Scorpions 10.7(67) to cap off another great year. In the Grand Final stand-out performances by Anthony Brolic and Billy Murphy, as well as the ever-consistent Sam Switowski and Matthew Traynor capped off great years for these players. I would like to congratulate all player, coaches, staff and volunteers for our great year, especially to development coach Matt Adolph and Captain Jake Summers who lead the Development Team professionally and diligently all year. I would like to take this opportunity to again thank the efforts of the Board lead by President Tony Pinwill, without the on-going support from the board we would not be in such a strong position both on-field and especially off-field. Off-field we had another outstanding year, with successful major events, match days and by exceeding our budget in many of our key revenue generating streams. The Club took some risks in 2016 with some big new projects and structural changes in which we need to create new fundraising initiatives to which we succeed and hopefully this will continue to hold the club in good stead for many years to come. As I have now resigned as Box Hill Hawks General Manager and moved back to the bigger brother (Hawthorn Football Club), I would like to thank everyone that have assisted in my journey over the past two seasons. The experience and professional development that the Club has allowed me to fulfil has been second to none. I will take much of what I learnt from this role with me for many years to come in many more career progressions. I would like to say a special thank you to Bob Lyford and John Ure for their guidance and assistance throughout this time, the Club is very grateful for your services over a long period of time and it is something that I’m sure the incoming General Manager, Daniel Napoli, will also rely heavily upon. Sponsors Like any Football Club sponsorship is paramount to our success both on and off-field, without our many partners we aren’t able to support the many young men and women aspiring to further their careers. Whether these are the 48 players listed under the Box Hill Hawks, or the Hawthorn listed players looking to further their career or it could be anyone of our staff, coaches, trainers, physios also looking to advance in their given fields. The support all of our partners are able to provide helps ensure we are able to continually develop and promote young aspiring talented men and women in the eastern corridor.

Major Sponsors In 2016 we saw the return of our co-major partners Budget Car and Truck Rental and iiNet; on behalf of everyone involved at the Club I would like to thank Paul and Simon Wheelton from Budget Car and Truck rental, the team at iiNet for again supporting grassroots football and ensuring that Hawthorn continue to develop the relationship with their V.F.L. side. Platinum Partners Deer Park Oil Tools (John Ure) once again was an outstanding support of this great club, John I thank you for your support both to the Club and also to myself once again for assisting in many areas across the business. This year we welcomed another Platinum partner in Dreamstreet Lending, a special thanks to John Hronis and the team at Dreamstreet Lending for joining our shorts partner in 2016, we look forward to your continued support for many years to come. I would also like to thank the following platinum partners in 2016: Lindellas – Dennis Dellas; LP Body Works – Morry and Mimmo Corvasce and Penfold Audi, in particular Scott Hannington from the Audi Centre Doncaster. Coaches Sponsor Roma Caravans once again continued as our coaches partner for season 2016 and I would like to thank the Palmarini Family and Bob Wynd for your involvement. To all of our partners I would like to say thank you for showing your support towards the Box Hill Hawks. Whether you have been in for 30 years (Budget Car and Truck Rental) or in your first season (Dreamstreet Lending and Audi Doncaster); we sincerely value your contribution. Vice Presidents Club The Vice Presidents Club membership is one that holds significant value to the Club, you show unwavering support throughout the year, home or away, sunny or in the pouring rain. Thank you to all of you, you continued attendance at our President’s Luncheons or major events does not go un-noticed and you should be proud of your efforts in season 2016. This year we welcomed many new Vice President’s Members to an already well established group, which enabled us to achieve record membership number in 2016. A big thank you to: Peter Allan Louisa Herbert David Schwartz Warren Anderson John Hronis Ed Sill Joshua Birney John Kitsou Otto Sill Wayne Birney V.T. Lingham Anthony Tasca David Booth Peter Mackenzie Mark Thompson Michael Brolic Alfred Mallia Campbell Tonkin David D’Silva David Mill Troy Tyler Sharif Eldebs Mark Nance John Ure James Gadsden Joe Nanni Jan Wade Scott Hannington Peter Papos Paul Wheelton OAM Catherine Harris Tony Pinwill Bob Wynd Michelle Hendrie Martin Ralston Also, I would like to thank our joint Number One Ticket Holders, Simon Marshall and Anthony “Lehmo” Lehman, for their support in season 2016. It’s great to see such well-known personalities within our communities show their support and involvement at V.F.L. level. Club Operations In season 2016 the club reached some fantastic new heights off field; as I briefly touched on before the Board as well as management took on some fantastic new projects and initiatives. The installation of a new full colour electronic LED scoreboard took our match day experience to a new level. The Club’s administration and Football offices had a much needed renovation; allowing for a more functional working environment, upgraded furniture and equipment to accommodate new staff members and provide new meeting spaces.

With the help of Sean Murphy and Billy Murphy, the Club upgraded the player’s gym equipment and provided an even more professional training environment. The Club also took on another full time employee to work alongside the General Manager to assist with sponsorship, fundraising, events and the ever growing media, marketing and communication arms of the business. We saw another very successful year in events, with our Presidents Luncheon’s regularly hosting in excess of 80 guests and on occasions achieving a full house. Our Mid-Season Event was most successful, generating more revenue than ever before. The Club is indebted to our ever loyal sponsors, members and supporters for their continuing strong support of our functions and events. Staff and Volunteers I would like to finish off by saying thank you to all staff and volunteers that have been helped make 2016 a successful year. The tireless efforts of all our match day staff in preparing our players to be able to perform at the level they need to is second to none. All involved with the Club truly appreciate the efforts of those who work behind the scenes; the long drives down the highway, sitting out in the cold and wet on a Sunday afternoon. Without your contribution, the Club doesn’t exist and we wouldn’t be able to share in the success and satisfaction that comes from something like the Development Team’s performance on Grand Final day. There are too many to thank individually and, at the risk of missing someone, I would just like to say on behalf of the Board, management coaches and players a big “Thank You”. To the administration team whom I have worked so closely with over the past two years; Stewart Ward, Bob Lyford, Yves Berryman and most recently John Cavarra, you guidance and support to not only myself but the rest of the team has been outstanding. A V.F.L. Club is made up of many special people and at times when the chips are down or the pressure is on, knowing that you have strong likeminded people to support the decisions you make is comforting and greatly appreciated. I want to finally say that my time at the Club has come to an end and I’m very grateful for the opportunity I have been given. My time with the Box Hill Hawks has taught me more than I have learnt in my working life; the experiences and knowledge of have gained I’m sure will hold me in good stead for many years to come. It’s time for a new chapter. I wish my successor Daniel Napoli well and, having worked with Daniel before, I know that the Club will be in safe hands. Good luck for season 2017 and beyond – Go Hawks! Chris Nanni General Manager

Senior Coach’s Report After the success of the past three years, you become accustomed to the joys of victory and you forget how much losing hurts. I think what compounds the pain is the fact that we had the talent to get us back there again this year but we let so many opportunities slip and fell well short of where we wanted the season to end. It wasn’t for lack of effort, our commitment and preparation this year was more intense, nothing was taken for granted nor a sense of entitlement as we all put in countless hours both on and off the field to continue our winning ways - but unfortunately it still wasn’t enough. We finished tenth (7 wins, 11 losses) with an average losing margin of 17 points – four of those by under a goal and another five within a kick going into the final quarter. Our best was still good enough and we got a glimpse of it early starting by winning our first four games and it could have quite easily been five in a row had a Teia Miles shot on goal late against Werribee been given the correct decision. The following week another close loss, this time by seven points to Casey, gave us two losses in a row for the first time since round 8, 2014 and the next two months didn’t get any easier with only two wins from our last eleven games.

We challenged all top eight sides, including eventual V.F.L. Premier Footscray, but in the end were unable to do the simple things well enough for long enough to reach our usual high expectations. Whilst we missed the finals for the first time in eight years, I am proud of what we've done and confident about the Club’s prospects going forward. The loss of experienced personnel combined with the injury list at both A.F.L. and V.F.L. level presented some challenges; it also presented opportunities for many of our exciting young first year players who all gained valuable experience at Senior level and all will be better for the experience. A total of 70 players represented the Box Hill Hawks in 2016 and we believe we have unearthed some potentially long term senior footballers at Box Hill in Warren, Switkowski, Jones, Kidd, Soccio, Walker, Fisher, Gibson, Bond and Evans; not only for our Club but hopefully at A.F.L. level. We continued our strong connections with the Eastern Football League and T.A.C. Clubs to get the best young talent which saw the club blood 19 debutants and has seen the addition of a number of budding V.F.L. and A.F.L. aspirants including Anthony Brolic, Stuart Horner, Connor O’Sullivan, Liam Cox, Max Canfield and Jack Firns. We welcomed back long term injured players Alex Woodward, Kaiden Brand, Ayden Kennedy and Mitch O’Donnell as well as welcoming over 20 new V.F.L. listed players to the Club this season. The list is a developing one and we have an excellent young crop of talent coming through as we witnessed with the Development Team’s 105-point victory in the Grand Final over Casey. Congratulations to coaches Matt Adolph, Damien Yze, Michael Schmerling and David Knight for a terrific season. Unfortunately, however, we also sadly part ways with a number of experienced players who have decided to move on; with Sam Iles, Marc Lock, Tom Gordon, Pat Lawlor and Jake Summers starting the next phase of their footballing careers. Thanks lads for your contribution to our club. I would like to thank our senior coaches Paul Kennedy, Nathan Foley, Mark Hibbins, David Banfield, Rob McCartney, David Neitz and my successor Chris Newman for their ability to mentor these young men. My job has been made easy thanks the unwavering support of the Box Hill Board, in particular President Tony Pinwill and Bob Wynd. To Rob Cannuli, Alan McDonald, Trevor Rankin, Cam Matthews, the team of statisticians and to the excellent fitness/medical team together with the countless volunteers; thank you all for your match day support. I am indebted to Chris Nanni (General Manager), Stewart Ward (Football Manager) and Sean Murphy (High Performance Manager) for their tireless work around the place. Thank you all for your efforts, sacrifice, dedication, hard work, time, and passion. Finally, to the playing group and especially Captain David Mirra, we thank you for your efforts across the season. V.F.L. Football is a massive commitment and we have a very motivated core group who are desperate for success. I know they will keep striving to improve. I’d like to congratulate our main trophy winners for season 2016: Club Champion: David Mirra Runner-Up Club Champion: Sam Iles Third Place Club Champion: Teia Miles Development Team Best and Fairest: Aaron Bond As I conclude this report it not only signals the end of the 2016 season but also my tenure as Senior Coach of the Box Hill Hawks Football Club after three enjoyable years. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to coach this proud Football Club. Marco Bello Senior Coach

A significant improvement at Box Hill City Oval in 2016 was the installation of a new electronic LED scoreboard. The new scoreboard, which cost $48,000, was funded by the Box Hill Hawks Football Club and by Discretionary Grants received from the Australian Sports Foundation Ltd. (Photo Credit: Jenny Owens)

In his third season with the Box Hill Hawks, Aaron Bond enjoyed a fine season in the Development Team; winning the Best and Fairest Award and playing a key role in the Team’s Premiership triumph. (Photo Credit: Jenny Owens)

The Thirtieth Anniversary Reunion of the Box Hill Football Club’s 1986 V.F.A. Division Two Premiership team was held on Sunday 5th June 2016. Pictured are Mustangs Premiership

heroes Luke Bolton, Mark Metzner and Geoff Withers enjoying the celebrations. (Photo Credit: Jenny Owens)

On Saturday 21st May 2016, Club Captain David Mirra became the 29th Box Hill player to achieve

the milestone of 100 Senior V.F.A. / V.F.L. games. Here he leads the team onto the arena through his

guard of honour. David Mirra led the Club by example in 2016; winning the Club Champion Trophy after being runner-up on four previous

occasions and being selected in the V.F.L. Representative Team.

FLYING HAWKS SCHOOL – BOX HILL HAWKS PLAYERS VISIT THE SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE The Flying Hawks School is a newly formed emerging leaders program that commenced in 2016 under the guidance of former Box Hill Captain, David Banfield. Six more former Club Captains – Mark Turner, Matt Brewer, Kristan Height, Darron Wilkinson, Steve Kenna and Clinton Alleway – were also involved. Champion boxer Jason Maloney and golfer Marcus Fraser also provided their support.

The idea of an emerging leaders program was born over a breakfast discussion between David Banfield, David Mirra and Matt Adolph. After running the idea past Senior Coach Marco Bello and Hawthorn Development Coach Rob McCartney, the program name and participating players were chosen.

The first official activity for the newly formed Flying Hawks School was in February at the Shrine of Remembrance. The group discussed ideas about building better bonds with Hawthorn listed players, sharing the leadership load, contributing to areas outside of Football and, of course, playing good Football.

During the year football boots were donated to a school in Western Australia, players attended training of junior clubs in the eastern suburbs and hot soup was served in winter. The emerging leaders learnt that there is a lot more to playing Football than training and getting a kick on the weekend.

The Flying Hawks School is looking to build on this foundation in season 2017.

Sam Iles, carrying his young daughter, leaves City Oval for the final time on Saturday 27th August 2016. Twice winner of the Club Champion Trophy and a member of the 2013 V.F.L. Premiership Team; he retired from V.F.L. Football after a memorable career which included 96 Senior games for the Box Hill Hawks and a total of 159 Senior games in the V.F.L. Premierships mean just as much to the Club’s behinds-the-scenes workers as they do to the players fortunate to be a part of the team. Here long-serving volunteer and life member Graeme “The Colonel”

Walsh is the centre of the after match celebrations of the Development Team’s 2016 Premiership on Sunday 18th September 2016.
