us to rely more and more on very primitive kinds of social
contacts. Malcolm Gladwell

Overcome shyness
Even outgoing people can be intimidated by a large group
 Many others are also shy

 The future

Balance business and personal topics
Find out what really excites them
Look for a reason to continue the discussion
Conversation QuestionsWhat brought you to this meeting?
How are you involved with this chapter? What is it like?
What is your business?
What websites are helpful?
Who else should I talk to here?
Ask if they “know someone who…”
Works at a company you’re interested in
Works at a company that does business with someone you’re interested in
“Plays” with someone you may be interested in
Ending the Conversation
After 3 – 5 minutes, it’s OK to say
“I’m going to continue to talk to others
here.”
“I need to do a little more networking.”
Be gracious when you leave and say, “It was a
pleasure talking to you.”
If there was a connection, agree to follow-up
