Over confidence is probably the most uncomfortable, its like being driven at 100mph by your son who passed his driving test the day before…just don’t do it” Stuart Greenfield

a better CEO in 2017

1 Confidence• Be seen – speak to your team face to face• Don’t email• Don’t test out ideas on staff before you have thought them through• Present your ideas as you would expect your team to!• Do your home work• Take responsibility for success and failure• Don’t delegate too soon• Take advice• Be humble and accept and expect to be wrong• Answer questions directly and personally• Don’t moan about things you can’t influence

DANGER• Intimidation “to frighten or threaten someone, usually in order to persuade them to do something that you want them to do: e.g:

They were intimidated into accepting a pay cut by the threat of losing their jobs”

“So often senior people suddenly think they don’t need to work hard and sort out the problems themselves, because sometimes the most intelligent are also the laziest” Stuart Greenfield

2 Intelligence (Emotional intelligence is different but useful as well!)

• You got to the top because of it – so use it• You can’t become more intelligent so don’t make it up• Experience means you can use your intelligence better• Take time out to solve problems yourself• Research and read up• Let your gut make the decision• Test it out on your family first• Listen to others intensely• Couch our idea in a way others get there first• Talk less

DANGER• Demeaning“causing someone to lose their dignity and the respect of others e.g:"the poster was not demeaning to women"

“Becoming impatient is a plague amongst middle management so it’s the CEO’s duty to ensure projects are given the right time and budget so that they are achievable, managers are normally too worried to say” Stuart Greenfield

3 Action orientated

• Making list of all the things you didn’t do in 2016• Setting goals for start and finish dates for everything• Putting a name on a job• Rewarding the team or individual on success• Putting up a winners board both physical and online • Tell everyone what the plan is and put it on the wall• Put the task and plan into pictures• Summarise in a sentence the positive outcome• Don’t send an email • Have a ‘town hall’ meeting and give out goal cards• Smile and say less

DANGER• Impatience“lack of patience; intolerance of or irritability with anything that impedes or delays e.g:“the pressures to finish the project on time froze the whole team"

“High performance is a great thing to aim for but unless you define what it is in your organisation it becomes an empty dream that just causes irritation” Stuart Greenfield

4 High Performance• High performance should be a norm but what is it?• You need achievable goals and the correct skills• Giving a reward (right pay for the job is not enough)• Giving teams the chance to plan delivery themselves• Give teams the opportunity to feedback on skill requirements• Do not assume everyone has the same needs for success as you• Provide a review system for all staff• High performance is impossible to deliver all the time• Allow for R&R regularly• Set performance goals that can be measured for each individual• Adhere to the goal setting yourself and publish (talk about it)

DANGER• Dissatisfaction“not content or happy with something e.g:“We worked out butts off but he still wasn’t happy"

“Being over disciplined for a leading can lead to a lack of creativity and spark, senior managers need to be seen to be one of the team and approachable but the most effective leaders need head time to think through the strategy “Stuart Greenfield

TRYImpatient DissatisfiedBurnt outBullying

5 Disciplined• Sticking to the plan and doing the every day every day.• Turning up on time• Switching off your phone• Using the business systems such as the CRM yourself• Learning how to use the CRM!• Listening to your managers and saying YES• Not interrupting meetings • Providing information to your peers on time• Attending company social events• Being part of the team• Admitting you’re wrong

DANGER• Burn out“Occupational burnout or job burnout is characterized by exhaustion, lack of enthusiasm and motivation, feelings of ineffectiveness, and also may have the dimension of frustration or cynicism, and as a result reduced efficacy within the workplace.

“The work place is a minefield and today the weapon are even better concealed in social media and email. It is time to reduce email and the use of social media between work place teams as non verbal communications are not present causing constant misinterpretation” Stuart Greenfield

TRYImpatient DissatisfiedBurnt outBullying

6 Direct Communications• Avoid blunt comments.• Remember that avoiding insults may be seen as more important

than providing honest feedback.• Pay attention to nonverbal behaviours. (body language)• Recognize that, for indirect communicators, it’s “always easier to

agree than to disagree” so take time to get a better response• Use open-ended, non-leading questions especially in a group

situation• Avoid social media and email for difficult interpersonal issues.• Ban email between office teams

DANGER• Bullying“Workplace bullying is a persistent pattern of mistreatment from others in the workplace that causes harm. It can include such tactics as verbal, nonverbal, psychological, physical abuse and humiliation”

“Too many senior directors are acting, this causes long term stress and creates uninspiring leaders who will fail to lead their staff and business to long term success, being able to relax and be yourself in business is one of the toughest tests of a real winner” Stuart Greenfield

TRYImpatient DissatisfiedBurnt outBullying

6 Emotional Control• Keep a balance and be consistent• Avoid shouting and swearing every day!• Never email when in a rage• Confront in person• Show emotion about people and the things you create only• Create a new idea every day but you don’t need to do them all• Relax and let yourself be yourself in meetings to achieve the best

interaction• Turn on the style and act the part when you need to look the part

play the part• Don’t be cool if you’re not

DANGER• Uninspiring“not producing excitement or interest.”
