The Cup for Cancer Project (CUPPA) was launched at the Hyper Checkers i n V e r e e n i g i n g D r i v e , Fleurdal,Bloemfontein on 7 June 2008.

Shoprite Checkers has committed itself nationally to this project to support us in making the public aware of CANSA's services to the public at large and to raise funds for CANSA to provide its services to society.

This year the theme was "Cup Cakes" and they were sold to the public at R5 a piece.

Coffee and tea were also sold at the same price.

The Cake Decorators' Guild produced the magical cup cakes and brought mermaids and Schreck to life, among others.

Cup cakes to the value of R2 900 were sold in this way.

Relay for Life volunteers were ably assisted with the sales by the cancer survivors.

Tests for prostate cancer were available for men at R70 a test.

ANTI-TOBACCO DRIVE AT SCHOOLS IN BLOEMFONTEIN During May a special anti-tobacco presentation was conducted at Sentraal Primary and Onze Rust Primary Schools and attended by all the grade 5, 6 and 7 learners. The two HPCs and three volunteers took turns to do the presentation.

What made this presentation unique was that it was the same presentation that was used for our annual volunteer training. It was compiled by Dr P Ber lyn, a paediatr ic ian f rom Kimberley, and showed the effect of smoke on the foetus with many vivid slides.

We built our own story around the presentation by acting out the well-known Survivor game on television. The children were struck by the impact of this presentation as we could see from their responses!

Father's Day was celebrated at Bobbie's Park on 13 June 2008. The celebrations started with some physical activities such as games and sport to establish a team spirit among young and old fathers.

We were welcomed by Director Hadebe who also made a presentation on gender issues before the tea break. Then it was Barbara's turn to make a presentation on men's health (testicular and prostate cancer ) . Barbara and Pontsho (volunteer) had a good time answering all the questions.

Superintendent Du Plessis made a presentation on domestic violence and rape as we learned so much about what

FATHER'S DAY IN BOBBIE'S PARKthe new law says with regards to guilty or not guilty.

Captain Lekoeneha, representing the old fathers, and Capt. Mudau, representing the new fathers also addressed the audience and invited us to watch a video on domestic violence. The video was most informative and the audience gained new insights.

Captain Duma, our contact person who is also a pastor in the Police Services, delivered the vote of thanks.

The Father's Day event was attended by 50 policemen and they were then treated to an enjoyable braai.

INTERNATIONAL ANTI-TOBACCO CAMPAIGNOn Fr iday 30 May 2008 , Bloemfontein Regional Office, launched a comprehensive anti-tobacco campaign at two different shopping centres, Middestad Shopping Centre and Dynarc Walk in Langenhoven Park.

Attractive exhibit ions were displayed at the two shopping centres and the public's attention

was truly caught by the “cigarette coffin” and the poster of the “smoker's body”!

The message to stop smoking went out loud and clear as the two HPCs and five volunteers distributed pamphlets and chatted to the public. Some CANSA sundry items were also on display for sale. The public supported the drive well.

OPERATION OUTREACH The Blanket Project

Pep Stores, Outsurance and OFM donated blankets to various charitable organisations through their Operation Outreach Project.

The purpose of this project is to bring the comfort of a warm blanket to the underprivileged in fighting the cold this winter.

According to the regional manager of Pep Stores, Mr Louis van Niekerk, they are still receiving blankets from the

public and they will distribute them to other needy people.

CANSA was one of the charitable organisations that received blankets and the rest of the blankets went to organisations such as Hospice, Pelonomi Hospital, Sunflower House, Lebone and APD.

This project is in its third year and so far 14 364 blankets to the value of R575 000 have been collected and the project is still going strong.

On Saturday 17 May 2008, the Free State Pet/CT Centre, Medi-Clinic and CANSA joined forces to introduce the important benefits of using the Petscan by cancer patients.

The morning was well attended. CANSA vo lunteers f rom Bloemfonte in and surrounding towns and medical staff from clinics and hospitals were invited to attend.

Special guests included:

PETSCAN MEDI-CLINIC BLOEMFONTEIN•Samantha Galliet, breast cancer survivor,

underwent a Petscan during her cancer treatment. She is currently running two

non-profit organisations that fight for the rights of cancer patients and address access to treatment issues.

• Jana du Plessis, bone cancer sur vivor, a lso under went a Petscan d u r i n g h e r c a n c e r treatment.

• Prof Louis Goedhals, governor of CANSA and Head of the Oncology Department at the National Hospital.

Medi-Clinic hosted the morning and provided the welcome refreshments. CANSA hosted the morning's programme.

Prof Goedhals opened the event by emphasising his support of the Petscan and he was very exited about the difference it can make in oncology.

Samantha, as the main guest speaker, emphasised the importance of patients'

understanding their specific cancer and treatment. Although she is no longer in remission and is currently undergoing chemotherapy again, she stood proudly with her head held high when testifying about her illness and the role of the Petscan during her treatment. She then spoke about the two non-profit organisations she started. She was such an inspiration to the cancer patients and survivors who attended. Jana also testified about her journey through cancer and the importance of the Petscan. She is currently in remission. Both women's moving testimonies of courage and determination made an indelible impact on the audience. Dr Jakes Möller, nuclear physician, explained the background and the use of the Petscan.

“BIBBERFEES” - SMITHFIELDThe annual “Bibberfees” Sheep Festival took place in Smithfield on 24 May 2008.

In keeping with the name of the festival, it was a very cold and windy day! The festival was launched with Grietjie, the Anglo-Boer War cannon firing a shot. Participants from all over the country exhibited a wide variety of goods and products. A typical market atmosphere reigned and the aromas of mutton, braaivleis, dried fruit and biltong wafted on the wind! Various competitions were held, such as the herd and regional sheep shear ing competitions, the “A-ma-ze” Race, a mountain bike race for the whole family, a baby competition, Miss Lamb & Mr Ram, a flower arrangement competition and exhibition. The dog race and the sheep-dog demonstration generated much excitement among the crowd.

Local talent, Carla, Miriek and Marnet

entertained the visitors with their lovely voices and the fashion parade show-cased off some promising talent and beauty. Thys die Bosveldklong headed the entertainment menu for the evening accompanied by a well attended sokkie for the young at heart.

At our CANSA stall we had our various pamphlets on exhibition and offered sundry items for sale. Families and friends of cancer survivors dropped by to chat. Henley and Sylvia explained our CANSA services to the local visitors and we were grateful to the volunteers who signed up from Smithfield, Rouxville and Aliwal North.

Creating cancer awareness at the festival in a subtly way and joining in the market atmosphere was worth bracing the cold! The different communities still show their commitment to CANSA by expressing an interest in becoming involved as volunteers. Henley Botha, HPC of Bloemfontein,

CANSA DANCE A SMASHING SUCCESSThe Ladybrand Rotary Anns had a smashing success with their annual CANSA dance recently. The live band Bahlzak entertained a crowd of 150 people to wonderful dance music that kept everyone on their feet until long after midnight. The Anns served a succulent spitbraai dinner in a stylish setting with romantic fairy lights and sandstone candleholders. They were able to raise more than R12 000 with ticket sales and are donating the funds to CANSA. “I think it was a wonderful evening and we want to thank the Anns and everyone who contributed for their hard work and generous support,” said Ilse Visser of CANSA in Ladybrand. The Anns wish to thank the following sponsors for their invaluable support: the

Mantsopa Municipality for the use of the town hall; the South African Police Canteen for the use of their dinnerware; Alita Bartleman for the use of her sandstone candleholders; Ladybrand Printers and Maluti News for the free printing and advertising; Rothman Boerdery, Gert Brits, Jan Oberholzer and Eddie Scholtz for donating the sheep; Dirk Barker for doing the spitbraai; and Kitty Beukman, Marie Bosch, Johan Brits, Anna-Marie Buys, Mainy du Preez, JP Fourie, House of Meats, Joal Apteek, Fanie Olckers, Elsabé Oosthuizen, Jaco Rothman, Stephen's Nursery and Estelle Weilbach for their financial contributions. Their support is greatly appreciated! The Ladybrand Rotary Anns are looking forward to planning another exciting ball for the third week in April next year.

The Bahlzac band delivered outstanding dance music at the Ladybrand Rotary Anns' annual

CANSA SUPPORTS THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH'S TB CAMPAIGN

On 9 April 2008 CANSA was one of the stakeholders that took par t in a comprehensive campaign organised by the Department of Health. The theme of the gathering was to trace the defaulters in TB and to put a working programme in place to

support the campaign.

According to the plan, 2 000 people were expected, but in the end more than 3 000 people attended the Imbizo.

CANSA had a big exhibition where we managed to educate the community of Tshiami B and the surrounding areas on cancer, and we also distributed many pamphlets and cancer Coping Kits.

Die prettige a a r d v a n d i e p r o j e k h e t eiendomsagentskappe aangespoor om deel

FREE STATE NORTHERN CAPE INTERIM HOMESThere is an on-going need among cancer patients for accommodation, food and care during the 6 to 8 weeks of their treatment in Bloemfontein. In recent years, decreases in hospital budgets have had a direct impact on facilities available to out-of-town patients with limited or no financial means.

CANSA'S Olea and Katleho interim homes were established to address these needs and to offer free accommodation as part of its services to cancer patients during treatment. Other services that include daily meals, transport to and from the treatment centre, physical care and emotional and spiritual support are also provided free of charge. Approximately 1 400 patients are accommodated in these two interim homes annually.

OleaThe only X-ray and oncology treatment centre for cancer patients in the Free State and Northern Cape is located in Bloemfontein. Rotarians in this city identified the need for an interim home in Bloemfontein more than 25 years ago, resulting in the establishment of Olea in 1974, as part of

C A N S A ' S services to out-o f - t o w n p a t i e n t s needing cancer treatment on an out-patient basis for 6 to 8 weeks. Since o p e n i n g i t s doors, Olea has cared for 26 patients at a time on a daily basis.

If patients have the means, their financial contribution is calculated according to their income, but on the whole, Olea is maintained mainly through the generosity of donations from the public and private sectors.

KatlehoCANSA'S Katleho interim home was established in 1990 and can accommodate 65 patients. As in the case of Olea, all services are provided free of charge by CANSA, with a minimal State subsidy. Were it not for the service rendered at Katleho, many patients from poor, rural communities would not be

able to undergo vital cancer treatment as they would not be able to afford accommodation.

How you can ensure the survival of our interim homesCANSA'S interim homes provide people who have been diagnosed with cancer with a tranquil home-from-home environment at a very stressful time in their lives. Your interest and financial support can make a big difference in the lives of those living with cancer and who are receiving treatment away from their familiar surroundings. Without funding and support from the public, individuals, companies and the private sector, it would be impossible to maintain services at our interim homes.

KANSA

MESSAGE FROM THE PROVINCIAL MANAGERWith activities well underway in the new financial year, it is very rewarding to re-v i s i t achievements of the previous year. Herewith a short summary of work approaches and a c h i e v e m e n t s from 1 April 2007

to 31 March 2008.

CANSA Free State & Northern Cape (FSNC) plays a vital role in cancer control in these two provinces. However, it cannot be done without partnering with communities. With only 52 staff members, the 3 733 trained volunteers form 98% of this partnership. Unique to these two provinces is the huge geographical area to be covered. Volunteers are therefore invaluable in delivering services. In this partnership, personnel are the mobilisers and enablers while the volunteers are the implementers.

Along with the provincial office in

Bloemfontein, CANSA FSNC also has regional offices in Springbok, Upington, Kimberley, B loemfontein, Welkom, Bethlehem and the newly opened office in Sasolburg. To ensure that the 2 787 patients and communities throughout these two provinces receive support, volunteers are involved as partners to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate all Patient Care, Early Detection, Health Promotion and Fund Development programmes.

Apart from facilitating support groups and home-based care services offered by 1 176 Patient Care volunteers, CANSA also offers accommodation and transport to patients who need radiotherapy treatment in Bloemfontein, the only centre in the Free State and Northern Cape offering this service. Patients are accommodated in CANSA's two interim homes, Katleho and Olea, in Bloemfontein, while receiving their treatment as out-patients. These two interim homes offered accommodation to 1 087 patients during the past financial year.

To raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and lowering the risk of cancer, and also to spread the message of the

value of early detection, CANSA FSNC reached 186 757 people in 1 791 health talks. CANSA FSNC has many long-standing working agreements with schools to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. During World Cancer Day on 4 February 2008, on the theme I love my smoke-free childhood, many children were reached with messages on the dangers of smoking.

During this financial year professional volunteers also did 10 196 screening tests to detect cancer as early as possible, as early detection increases a patient's chances of survival. Health and Wellness clinics and health camps are also vehicles used to deliver the message of prevention and early detection. The media plays a significant role as they offer CANSA a platform to reach many. One hundred and twenty-five radio talks were broadcast and 302 articles were printed in provincial and local newspapers. CANSA FSNC also offered 6 symposia on different themes, aimed at health professionals interested in cancer control.

To sustain the health programmes, a total of R8 093 165 had to be raised. With 6% income raised from bequests, 8% subsidies received from the Department of Social Development, 11% from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and 19% from other donations, more than half of the budget (56%) had to be raised through fundraising events such as the very successful Relay for Life events, Shavathons, Cuppa for Cancer events and other local initiatives. The creativity of personnel and volunteers seems infinite when it comes to fundraising. Often even patients themselves have to assist in raising funds! This year R22 000 was raised by patients from Olea Interim Home in Bloemfontein with the Bucks for Beds project.

We are very blessed that once again we managed to meet our income targets. This was no easy process, but with hard work and perseverance volunteers and personnel could support our communities. It is only with the dedication and commitment of personnel, volunteers and partners who take ownership of CANSA's mission that so much could be achieved during the past financial year.
