LIGHTING Q&AWhat’s the best lighting to usefor fashion–type portraits?

Some of the best fashion shotsare runaway work, where I’veused one on–camera flash andshot as the models come by,moving to music. These shotsare fantastic. Often there’s astage behind them, whichmakes a great background.Fashion is clothing, movementand good–looking people. Insome magazines, art directorspose people as if they were in1930’s Hollywoodmovies–draped against pillars,using strong lighting with shad-ows falling behind them. Theimage is one of total elegance.Strobes are ideal for showingthe movement of the person andthe clothes. Men’s fashion usu-ally doesn’t involvemovement–the models are usu-ally standing still, leaningagainst a doorway or wall. Inrecent years a more casual lookin fashion photography for menhas been introduced. It is easi-est to use outdoor lighting forfashion. Try having your modelcome up a stairway in brightsunlight, which shows theclothes well. Just turn the faceaway from the bright sunlight.The fashion look, in portraiture,or for straight fashion work,means you use the mood theoutfit dictates. If a man is wear-ing a tweed jacket and anopen–collared shirt, make surehe is photographed in a com-fortable situation. If he’s in atuxedo, the situation is moreformal. Clothing can determine alighting setup–how dramatic itshould be and how dominant.

Portable,packablebackgroundsthat arefeatherlightandreversible.The materialused is a typeof nylon-blend velour specially dyed to specifications. They are hand paintedon one side to create an “Old Masters” effect – an important plus tothe portrait photographer – the reverse side is offered in its solidcolor for other photographic uses. Because the material is not com-pletely opaque, the backgrounds respond very well to additive colorthrough the use of gels. There are eleven colors offered; MediumBlue, Stormy Grey, Royal Burgundy, Rembrandt Brown, Pastel Blue,Pearl Grey, Earthtones, Grey Mirage and the new Beige Pastel.Blackest Black and Photo White (unpainted) complete the colorselections. Sizes include a 6´x7´ (1.8x2.1m) and an 8´x12´(2.4x3.7m). The 8´x12´ may also be used in a 12´x8´ configurationsuch as would be required for larger or wider compositions. Advantages of LiteRing - TheLiteRing works in conjunctionwith our reflective Chromattefabric. Together they efficientlyuse the LiteRing’s narrow wave-length of light to generate a bril-liant but low level and even col-ored background, producingexcellent chroma key results.They achieve this due to thephysical characteristics of thelight, its direction and position,in relation to each other in aprocess called ‘retro-reflectivity’.

Configuration - The LiteRing isa mains powered and adjustablelight source, made up of blue orgreen LEDs, arranged aroundand close to the centre of thecamera lens (known as the ‘cen-tre axis’).

Location - The LiteRing is fixedto the camera and is positionedfractionally behind the front ofthe lens. Lightweight anddetachable in seconds, if youwant to change from a blue to agreen key you simply unscrewand replace with a different col-ored LiteRing.

Angularity - The LEDs arespecifically angled to beam thecolored light at the facing con-cave shaped glass beads on thereflective Chromatte back-ground. The light is then reflect-ed back along the same axis(angle) towards and into thecamera lens

Maneuverability - Traditionalchroma key often requires that yourelight the background for eachcamera set up. With the LiteRingattached to the camera you canmove from 90 degrees head on, toapproximately 10 degrees fromhorizontal only requiring a slightadjustment on the LiteRingController to effect a key.

Distances - Ideal shooting dis-tances depend on a number ofvariables including levels ofambient light, choice of keyingapplications, camera quality andfilming formats. As a rule thesubject should be further than2-3m (8´) from the camera toavoid a blue or green cast oflight. Maximum distance risesup to approximately 20m (60´).

The LiteRing is a circular arrangement of bright blue or green lightemitting diodes (LEDs) mounted around the camera lens. TheLiteRing provides all the necessary source light required to illumi-nate the Chromatte fabric for keying. Manufactured in two sizes, itis compatible with most digital video and professional camera lens-es. The AC powered LiteRing Controller (LRC) allows you to adjustthe intensity of light required for optimum keying results.

The props are designed to give a small cameraroom the illusion of size and elegance and a largecamera room functionality. All sizes of camerarooms in all kinds of studios were successfully out-fitted. Even our largest systems store convenientlyin a small area against a wall.

These portable props are made of lightweight, highdensity polystyrene. Every piece is hand-carvedand hand-painted for life-like results. They areeasy to maneuver in your camera room or loadinto a vehicle for a location session. All of the hightraffic areas are laminated to increase theirstrength. The entire product is then covered with asuper strong surface coating making them weatherresistant and extremely damage resistant.

Versatile, modular, double-sided pieces were designedand manufactured, which have made it simple to cre-ate the illusion of size and depth in any camera roomor outdoor location, so photographers could fully uti-lize the controlled environment of their camera room,not just as an alternative to bad weather. The colorand tonality of all props and backgrounds were coor-dinated allowing your subject to remain the primaryfocus of the overall image. All systems are designed tobecome interactive, meaning they become a part ofthe image and not just part of the background.
