“Lord, if it is you, command me to
come to you on the water.”
Fear, disbelief, amazement and reas-
surance are just some of the emotions
the disciples experienced when they
saw Jesus walking toward their boat
on the wind tossed waters of the Sea
of Galilee. It is Peter who speaks to
the person on the water. Notice he
says, “If it is you . . .” Obviously, he is
not sure. But at least he has the courage to ask. Then he says,
“command me to come to you . . .” Peter hopes it is Jesus and
he may even have believed it was Jesus. He wants to go to
Jesus. But he does not want to take the responsibility for step-
ping out of the boat in the event he is wrong. He wants Jesus to
“command” him so if he fails it is Jesus’ fault. Before we judge
Peter and the other disciples too harshly we should reflect on
our reaction when we sense Jesus is calling us, through his
presence in the midst of turmoil and uncertainty, to step out of
our comfort zone into a strange or risky situation. Do we have
the faith, hope and courage to do so without being “commanded”
by Jesus? Are we willing to be responsible for our faith?
Pastor’s Corner : Koinonia
Two apostles walk into a Jerusalem coffee shop. Paul says,
“Now that Jesus sent us out to change the world, I’m going to
help people believe like Christians.” James says, “Nah, I’m going
to help them behave like Christians.”Peter overhears and joins
in, “Believing or behaving like Christians? No need to argue,
fellas. It’s also about belonging as Christians!”These apostolic
coffee mates tell us an important truth. Christian faith and Chris-
tian behavior are important, but so is “belonging” to each other
as Christians. “…so we, though many, are one body in Christ,
and individually members one of another.” “Koinonia” is a good
word to describe that sense of belonging. With such deep fellow-
ship their faith in Christ and their Christ–like behaviors were visi-
ble to a waiting world, which observed, “See how those Chris-
tians love one another.” A strong church is one that experiences
deep “belonging” like that. I want to bring Koinonia to Holy Re-
deemer and Holy Trinity. Koinonia team from Holy Spirit Bowling
Green ) is ready to lead us and in few weeks some of them will
come to give us more details.
August 13, 2017: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
What keeps you from following Christ? For many, it is fear. As
the disciples experienced fear, Jesus commanded them to take
courage. Responding to our vocation takes courage and often
challenges us to step out into unknown territory. If we trust in
the Lord, He will raise us up and we will join our voices with his
disciples who proclaim “Truly, you are the Son of God.” If you
feel that God might be calling you to the vocation of priesthood,
contact the vocations office for resources and support. 270-683

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This feast has a double object: (1) the happy departure of Mary
from this life ; (2) the assumption of her body into heaven . It is
the principal feast of the Blessed Virgin. The Assumption of
Mary into Heaven, often shortened to the Assumption and also
known as the Feast of Saint
Mary the Virgin, mother of
Our Lord Jesus Christ and
the Falling Asleep of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, ac-
cording to the beliefs of the
Catholic Church, Eastern
Orthodoxy, Oriental Ortho-
doxy, and parts of Anglican-
ism, was the bodily taking up of
the Virgin Mary into Heaven
at the end of her earthly life. The
Catholic Church teaches as
dogma that the Virgin Mary "having completed the course of
her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glo-
ry". This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on
1 November 1950. In the churches that observe it, the Assump-
tion is a major feast day , commonly celebrated on 15 August. In
many countries, the feast is also marked as a Holy Day of obli-
gation in the Roman Catholic Church and as a festival in the
Anglican Communion. Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeem-
er at 6:00 pm ( Tuesday, August 15 ). Everyone is welcomed.
2017 Solar Eclipse
On August 21, 2017 a total Solar
Eclipse will occur with the Earth
crossing the shadow of the moon
creating a total eclipse. The total
solar Eclipse will be fascinating as this has not occurred in al-
most 40 years. The whole continent will experience a partial
Eclipse lasting 2 to 3 hours ( weather permitting ). Halfway
through the event , anyone within a roughly 70 mile wide path
from Oregon to South Caroline will experience a brief eclipse,
when the moon completely blocks the sun for up to 2 minutes
and 40 second. The day will turn to night making visible the
otherwise hidden solar cornea - the sun’s outer atmosphere
along with bright stars and planets .
